About the journal
HIV Medicine is a peer-reviewed journal publishing original articles, reviews and guidelines on all aspects of HIV treatment and diagnosis. The journal is specifically aimed at researchers and clinicians with responsibility for treating HIV seropositive patients.
Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines Please submit the article by e-mail to HIVMedicine@mediscript.ltd.uk If this is impossible, please send one hard copy of the manuscript and a computer disk to the following address:
The Editor HIV Medicine Mediscript Ltd 1 Mountview Court 310 Friern Barnet Lane London N20 0LD UK
A covering letter must be included, signed by the corresponding author (i.e. the author to whom correspondence should be addressed), and stating on behalf of all the authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. All submitted manuscripts will be acknowledged by the Editor. A completed copyright assignment form must be included with the submitted manuscript. All accepted papers become the copyright of the British HIV Association. The Journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and abides by its principles.
Manuscript Style
The typescript should be on A4 paper, double-spaced and with ample margins. Under normal circumstances articles which would exceed ten printed pages will not be accepted for publication (approximately 5,000 words, three tables and three figures or the equivalent thereof). Longer articles may be accepted at the discretion of the Editor.
Main articles should consist of the following sections.
Title Page This should contain a concise title of the article, a shortened version (no more than 50 characters including spaces) for the running head, names of the authors (initials and surnames only), their affiliations, and the full postal address, fax and telephone number, and e-mail address of an author to whom correspondence can be addressed.
Summary A structured summary (no more than 250 words) should describe the content of the paper accurately and the important conclusions, couched in terms which will be understood by the majority of readers of the Journal. This should be on a separate page. The main headings should be objectives, methods, results, conclusions. A list of key words (no more than five) should be given for reference purposes, together with a list of abbreviations used.
Main Text This should start on a separate page, and include: an introduction, methods, results and discussion. The suggested points of insertion for figures and tables, etc., should be indicated. Authors should avoid abbreviations (except for those commonly understood), long sentences, and many juxtaposed numbers in sentences.
References These should be in the Vancouver style, i.e. numbered throughout the text in consecutive order using Arabic numerals in parentheses. The references should be listed in numerical order at the end of the paper using the following styles. List all authors when six or less and list the first three followed by et al. when there are more than six. Unpublished work should only be cited in the text. Only references genuinely in press should be listed in the reference list.
Examples of references:

Illustrations These should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numbers, e.g. Fig.1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance. Each figure should be marked on the back with its appropriate number, together with the name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper. Where there is doubt as to the orientation of an illustration the top should be marked with an arrow. One original, marked as above, with two good copies should be supplied.
Photographs and photomicrographs should be unmounted glossy prints and should not be retouched. Labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy. Colour illustrations are acceptable when found necessary by the Editor; the author will be expected to contribute towards the cost of printing.
Figures that have been generated electronically should be saved in as many different formats as are available to you. Encapsulated postscript CEPS files can usually be used but cannot be modified. Always enclose a hard copy of the figures. Line drawings should be on separate sheets of white paper in black indelible ink (dot matrix illustrations are not permitted); lettering should be on an overlay or photocopy and should be no less than 4 mm high for a 50% reduction. Each figure should have a legend clearly describing it; these legends should be grouped on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
Original artwork will not normally be returned to authors.
If you have colour artwork in you article, please see the note below on costs of reproduction.
Tables These should include only essential data. Each table must be typewritten on a separate sheet and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, e.g. Table 1, and given a short caption.
Acknowledgements These should be brief and must include references to sources of financial and logistical support.
Units Measurements must be in SI units and authors should use negative indices, e.g. mg h-1. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (Royal Society of Medicine, 1988) is a useful guide.
Electronic Submission
Manuscripts are published from disk and must be provided in this form with the final accepted version of the manuscript. This reduces typesetting errors and speeds up publication. A disk information form can be supplied on request and will be sent to all authors at the stage of revising their manuscript. The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. Carriage returns should not be used at the ends of lines within paragraphs. The hyphenation option should be turned off. Do not justify. Disks will not be returned to authors.
Permissions
It is the authors responsibility to obtain and provide proof of permission to reproduce previously published material.
Page Proofs
These must be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt, ideally by fax: (+44 (0)1865 200918). Only typographical errors and other essential small changes can be made at this stage. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints of each paper are supplied free, but additional copies may be purchased if ordered on the printed sheet, which will be sent to the author with the proofs.
Cost of colour reproduction of artwork
It is the policy of HIV Medicine for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork.
Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published.
