About the journal

Advances in Complex Systems aims to provide a unique medium of communication for multidisciplinary approaches, either empirical or theoretical, to the study of complex systems in such diverse fields as biology, physics, engineering, economics, cognitive science and social sciences, so as to promote the cross-fertilization of ideas among all the scientific disciplines having to deal with their own complex systems. By complex system, it is meant a system comprised of a (usually large) number of (usually strongly) interacting entities, processes, or agents, the understanding of which requires the development, or the use of, new scientific tools, nonlinear models, out-of equilibrium descriptions and computer simulations. Understanding the behavior of the whole from the behavior of its constituent units is a recurring theme in modern science, and is the central topic of Advances in Complex Systems.
Papers suitable for publication in Advances in Complex Systems should deal with complex systems, from an empirical or theoretical viewpoint, or both, in biology, physics, engineering, economics, cognitive science and social sciences. This list is not exhaustive. One important component of the papers should be their cross-disciplinary approach or perspective.
Instructions to Authors
Original papers can be submitted as regular papers or as letters. Regular papers report detailed results, whereas letters are short communications, not exceeding 3000 words, that report important new results. Ideally, regular papers should contain between 3000 and 10000 words, but the editors may consider the publication of shorter or longer papers if necessary. Short reviews and tutorials (less than 10000 words) will also be considered. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief (acs@tbi.univie.ac.at) before embarking on a review or tutorial. Approval of the proposal does not imply acceptance of the manuscript, which will be reviewed like any other manuscript.
The journal will also publish special issues on topics of broad interest. Proposals for special issues can be made to the Editors-in-Chief (Peter F. Stadler, acs@tbi.univie.ac.at and Eric Bonabeau, bonabeau@santafe.edu) Although "guest" editors will be (partly) responsible for advertising "their" special issues, finding authors, having papers reviewed, the final editorial decision rests in any case with the editor(s)-in-chief and the editorial board, who may decide to reject a paper or ask for additional reviews.
It is extremely important that papers contain a sufficiently long introduction accessible to a wide readership, and that results be put in broader perspective in the conclusion. However, the main body of a paper should not have a low technical content under the pretext that the journal is multi-disciplinary.
The submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that thematerial is original and has not been and will not be (unless not accepted in Advances in Complex Systems) submitted in equivalent form for publication elsewhere.
Authors are invited to suggest the names, addresses and emails of at least five possible referees for their contributions. The general area of expertise of each potential referee is also requested.
Papers will be published in English. The American or the British forms of spelling may be used, but this usage must be consistent throughout the manuscript.
Electronic submission is requested. The use of the journal's LaTex template files is strongly encouraged. Authors using word processors should conform to the style given in the sample PDF file (acs.pdf) below. A PDF or PostScript file is sufficient for the first submission. Source files will be requested when the paper is accepted for publication.
