About the journal

                                           Transport in Porous Media

Transport in Porous Media is devoted to the presentation of original basic and applied research work on the physical and chemical aspects of transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of a component of a phase, momentum and energy, in single and multiphase flow in a (possibly deformable) porous medium domain, as encountered in a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines: chemical, civil, agricultural, petroleum and mechanical engineering, to mention but a few. Understanding these transport phenomena, first at the microscopic scale and then at larger ones, serves as a basis for the construction of deterministic and stochastic mathematical and numerical models that describe them. These models are then used, among other cases, to describe flow and contaminant transport in aquifers and in the unsaturated zone, oil and gas movement in petroleum reservoirs, solvent drives and enhanced oil recovery, heat and mass transport in packed bed reactors in chemical engineering, in geothermal reservoirs and in building materials, spreading of pollutants from radioactive waste repositories, filtration processes, and transport of fluids and chemicals in lungs and other organs, as studies in biomedical engineering.

The emphasis in Transport in Porous Media is on theory, laboratory work and (nonroutine) applications. New developments in analytical and numerical techniques are also welcome. Occasionally, invited state of the art reviews are included when they provide a solid background for future research.

Instructions to Authors

1.Statement of Editorial and Publication Policies

Manuscripts submitted to this journal should contain original basic and applied research work on physical and chemical aspects of phenomena of transport in porous medium domains. They should not have been published, or simultaneously submitted elsewhere.

Submitted articles should largely contain previously unreported material. The overlap of contents between related papers should be the minimum, normally confined to the introductory/review sections.

Authors should provide information and preprints on any papers closely related to the submitted paper, which have not yet appeared in the public domain (in review, in press). If deemed necessary to the review process, these will be copied to the reviewers.

Authors should consult the Journal’s 'Authors Instructions' for detailed stylistic guidelines, during preparation of their manuscripts. The Editor may return manuscripts that are grossly inconsistent with these guidelines.

Where the submitted manuscript is multi-authored, one individual will need to be the corresponding author. It will be assumed that all the authors have been involved in the work, have approved the manuscript, and agree to its submission.

Manuscripts will be sent to at least two reviewers. Reviewers are requested to treat the manuscript confidentially. They may choose to identify themselves, or remain anonymous.

The Editor’s judgement is final with regard to suitability for publication.

The Publisher carries responsibility for typesetting, page lay-out and figure sizing, for all accepted papers.

Authors are responsible for reading and correcting page proofs of their articles. Proof corrections are normally restricted to typesetting and printing errors. Major changes cannot be undertaken at the proof stage.

1.1. Books for Review

Books for review are invited and should be sent directly to the Journals Office of the publisher. The Journal publishes long discursive reviews of selected books and short epigrammatic characterisation of others.

1.2. Information and News Section

Short announcements of scientific meetings and other events, of interest to the Journal¡®s readers, will be accepted free of charge.

1.3. Letters to the Editor

Matters arising, brief discussions, research notes, and comments, etc., may be sent for publication as Letters to the Editor which will be given high priority in publication. They should be brief and to the point, and should contain no more than three pages, including tables or figures.

1.4. Review Articles

It is not the intention of the Journal to publish review papers frequently. Occasionally, invited critical state-of-the-art reviews will be included, with the objectives of critically evaluating existing knowledge and providing background information for future research. Authors who wish to review a particular topic, should consult the Editor prior to submission of the manuscript.

1.5. Special Issues

It is the policy of the Journal to enable, and even to encourage and initiate the publication of a special issue from time to time. Each special issue is devoted to a single, well defined topic. The title of the topic as well as the guest editor’s names will appear on both the cover and on the contents page of the issue.

For further details on the preparation and publication of special issues, please be referrred to the "Guidelines for Special Issues".

2. Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts intended for publication should be written in English. Transport in Porous Media prefers the submission of papers in LaTeX. However papers submitted in Amstex and Lamstex can also be accepted.

For the purpose of refereeing, papers for publication should be initially submitted in hardcopy (fivefold and on disk) to:

Journals Editorial Office
Transport in Porous Media
Kluwer Academic Publishers
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands
Telephone +31 78 6576000
Fax +31 78 6576555

The eventual supply of accepted-for-publication papers in their final form on MS-DOS or Apple Macintosh diskettes in LaTeX, together with a hardcopy version (in case anything needs to be checked), will ensure more rapid publication.

A LaTeX style file can be obtained from the Publisher (Internet: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/).

Manuscripts which are submitted in typewritten form should be typed double-spaced on one side of plain paper, with wide margins for editorial notes and mark-up. All equations and symbols should be typed if possible; in any case, clarity is essential.

Mimeographed copies will not be accepted unless clearly legible. The first page should include the title of the paper; the author¡®s name and affiliation; a short abstract of not more than 200 words which clearly summarises the paper; and a list of key words (see below). The length of a manuscript should not exceed 20 pages, including graphs and figures. Priority of publication will be given to shorter papers. Where papers have long titles, a shortened version (not more than 46 characters) should be indicated for running headlines. Authors are advised to write as concisely as possible. Authors of longer papers are encouraged to divide their articles into sections with appropriate sub-headings.

3. Key Words

Key words supplied by the author should appear on a line following the abstract. The key words selected should be comprehensive and subject specific. It is not necessary to list the subject area of the Journal¡®s coverage as a key word. Six to 10 key words should be sufficient to cover the major subjects of a given paper, although more can always be supplied if the author deems it necessary.

General terms should not appear as key words, as they have little use as information retrieval tools. Please, choose key words to be as specific as possible, and list the most specific first, proceeding to the most general last.

4. Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

5. Units

All scientific and technical data presented should be stated in SI units, except in unavoidable circumstances.

6. Footnotes

Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and used only when essential.

7. Formulae

Formulae in manuscripts submitted for conventional typesetting should be type-written whenever possible. Alternatively, a fine drawing pen and black ink should be used, it is extremely important that all mathematical symbols and letters used are identified and listed and that the required style of appearance of such symbols is clearly indicated, e.g., bold face, italics, script, outline, fraktur, etc. Sub- and super-script should be clearly indicated where confusion might arise. Use a full stop as a decimal sign. Identify in the margin any symbols that might be confused with similar symbols, e.g., letter l and figure 1, capital letter O and figure 0, letter e, Greek ¦Å, and element sign Î, letter v and Greek ¦Í, etc.

8. Tables

Tables, which should be presented on separate sheets, must be numbered consecutively with roman numerals and have titles. They should be prepared in such a manner that no break is necessary. The use of vertical lines in tables is strongly discouraged. The approximate required locations of the tables should be indicated in the left-hand margin of the MS.

9. Figures

Authors should appreciate the importance of good quality illustrations. All graphs and diagrams should be referred to as ¡¯Figure¡® (not abbreviated) in the text. Where required, a detailed caption should be provided for each figure and a list of all captions provided on a seperate sheet. The approximate required location of each figure should be indicated at the appropriate place in the margin.

Line drawings, if not provided through a computerised drawing package, should be in Indian ink on white matt paper or tracing paper. Glossy white photographs, with the top clearly indicated, are acceptable.

Figures should be numbered consecutively, and should be indentified with the first author¡®s name and the title of the paper using a soft blue pencil (on the back of photographs, in the margin on tracing paper).

All illustrations should be approximately twice the final size with lettering large enough to be legible after reduction.

10. References

References should be listed alphabetically at the end of each paper. They should be cross-references in the text by using the author¡®s name and publication data in the style of Smith (1982) or (Smith, 1982) according to context. Papers by three or more authors should be abbreviated to Smith et al. (1982).

10.1. Journal reference

Should consist of name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), year of publication, article title, abbreviated name of journal (italics), volume number (bold), and full page numbers, e.g., Galbally, I.E.: 1976, Man-made carbon tetrechloride in the atmosphere, Science 193, 573-576.

10.2. Book reference

Should consist of name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), date of publication, title of book (italics), publisher, town and, if referring to part of a book only, the full page number, e.g., Nelson, E.: 1966, Dynamical Theories of Brownian Motion, Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J., pp. 24-25.

10.3. Edited volume reference

Should consist of name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), title of paper, name(s) of editor(s), title of book (italics), publisher, town, year, full page numbers, e.g., Bobroky, B.A. and Zakai, M., 1981 Asymptotic bounds on the minimal error of non-linear filtering, in M. Hazewinkel and J.C. Willems (eds.), Stochastic Systems: The Mathematics of Filtering and Identification and Applications, D. Reidel, Dordrecht, pp. 573-583.

11. Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).

Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any corrections to the PDF file.
Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to:
proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail.
Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).

12. Offprints

Twenty-five offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints (both hard copies and PDF files) can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.

13. Page Charges

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. An exception will be made for special extras such as fold-outs and colour reproductions.

GUIDELINES FOR SPECIAL ISSUES

It is the policy of the Journal to enable, and even to encourage and initiate the publication of a special issue from time to time. Each special issue is devoted to a single, well defined topic. The title of the topic as well as the guest editor’s names will appear on both the cover and on the contents page of the issue.

The following are the guidelines for the preparation and publication of such issues.

Preparation of a Proposal

The Guest Editor(s) for a special issue (SI) is(are) chosen by the Editor. The Guest Editor(s) should submit to the Editor and the publisher for their approval a proposal that contains the following information: title of the SI, a brief outline summarizing the objectives of the special issue, tentative time schedule, and a list of tentative contributions. In case there are several Guest Editors (GEs) one GE will act as corresponding GE.

Tasks of Guest Editor

Once, the proposal for a SI is approved, the GE will select authors and invite them to submit journal quality papers (in terms of scientific content, English and presentation) to the SI. The GE will then provide the Editor with an updated Table of Contents and outline of the SI. The GE will also select reviewers for the submitted papers, inform the Editor on the choice of reviewers, and keep in touch with the Editor on all other matters concerning the special issue and the status of the preparations. The GE should prepare a strict time schedule and inform the authors and reviewers of it. It is the GE’s responsibility to ensure a thorough and speedy review procedure. The GE will submit a Preface to the SI.

Peer Reviewing Procedure

All articles appearing in the SI should conform to the standard editorial and publication policies as outlined for the journal. Although appearing as part of a SI, all articles should conform to the same quality standard as any journal paper. This implies that each manuscript will be original, not be published formally elsewhere and will be peer reviewed by at least two international specialists in the field. In case a major revision is recommended by any of the referees, the revised script should be reviewed again by at least one referee.

Final Acceptance by the Editor

The complete set of scripts, reviewers?reports, relevant correspondence, and recommendation by the Guest Editor should be sent to the Editor for final acceptance. In consultation with the Guest Editor, the Editor will make the decision concerning acceptance and will send a letter of final acceptance to the authors.

Documentation

Guest editors will receive from the publisher, Authors instructions, Consent to Publish forms, review forms, as well as a special issue contract.

Size

Each issue will contain 125 pages, but, when justified, it may contain up to 250 pages.

Color Images

Color images can be included at the author’s expense. Please contact the publisher for more details.

Checklist

When submitting final accepted material to the publisher, the following should be included:

dates received/accepted

sequence of papers

names, full address details including email addresses of the corresponding authors

original figures in printed form, plus electronic version (of least 300 dpi)

Preface or Guest editorial

Mechanics of Publication

The Guest Editor will receive a full set of proofs (in case of multiple GEs the publisher will supply multiple sets of proofs). The corresponding authors will receive author’s proofs.

It is the intention of Kluwer, subject to the recommendations of the Guest Editor(s) and the Editor, to consider the possibility of also distributing the special issue as a separate (hardcover) book.

Every first author of a paper contributing to a special issue will receive a complimentary copy of that special issue and 25 copies of offprints of the paper. The Guest Editor(s) will receive two copies of the special issue. There are no page charges.
