About the journal
Toxicology is an international journal devoted to publishing the highest quality original research in all areas dealing with the adverse effects of foreign agents on the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. The goal of the journal is to advance sound scientific understanding of the mechanisms by which foreign substances adversely affect health. Emphasis will be placed on toxic effects observed at relevant exposure doses, which have direct impact on safety evaluation and risk assessment practices. All manuscripts published in Toxicology are subject to rigorous peer review.
In addition to original research articles, concise and current review and mini-review articles are also welcome, as are personal opinion papers and commentaries. Please consult the Managing Editors for special instructions prior to submitting such articles.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that they describe original research performed by authors, that all authors approve of the submission, and that the manuscript is not being considered for publication elsewhere. By submitting the manuscript, the authors agree that, if accepted for publication, copyright of the complete article will be assigned to the publisher.
Authors in North America, Central America and South America should submit their manuscripts preferably only in electronic format (e-mail attachment or disc copy) to Dr. Kendall B. Wallace, University of Minnesota, School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, 10 University Drive, Duluth, MN 55812, USA, e-mail: toxamer@d.umn.edu. See below for instructions pertaining to electronic submissions.
Authors in Europe, Asia, Japan, Australasia and Africa should send their manuscripts in both, paper and electronic format Prof. H.W.J. Marquardt, Department of Toxicology, Hamburg University Medical School, Vogt-Koelln-Strasse 30 (Haus G), 22527 Hamburg, Germany; Tel: (+49)40 42883 2095, Fax: (+49)40 42883 2130.
Manuscripts for the section Immunotoxicology are to be sent, in both paper and electronic format, to Prof. J. Descotes, Hopital Edouard Herriot, Lyon Poison Centre and INSERM U503, 69437 Lyon, Cedex 03, France, e-mail: jacques.descotes@chu-lyon.fr.
Papers for Web Alerts should be sent, in both paper and electronic format, to P. Wexler, Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, 2 Democracy Plaza, Suite 510, 6707 Democracy Boulevard MSC 5467, Bethesda, MD 20892-5467, USA. Fax: +1-301-4803537.
It is understood that with submission of this article the authors have complied with the institutional policies governing the humane and ethical treatment of the experimental subjects, and that they are willing to share the original data and materials if so requested.
Review Articles: The two Managing Editors welcome the submission of concise and pertinent reviews on current issues in toxicology, conference reports, book reviews, short opinion or commentary. These items will be treated as rapid publications.
Paper copies (in English)
typewritten, double spaced
submitted in triplicate (original and two copies of both text and illustrations)
organized as follows: Title Page, Abstract (100-200 words), Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References, Tables, Figure Legends, Figures
Your disk and (exactly matching) printed version (printout, hardcopy) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. In case of revision, the same procedure should be followed such that, on acceptance of the article, the file on disk and the printout are identical.
Characters not available on your word processor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g. gralpha, , c, etc., for the Greek letter). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your word processor to introduce word splits and do not use a 'justified' layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal.
Title Page should contain a concise and descriptive title, authors' full names, professional affiliations, full mailing address including e-mail, identity of corresponding author, and a list of 3-6 keywords that include the full chemical name(s).
Figures: Line drawings (including graphs) should be drawn in black ink on white paper. Alternatively, sharp photoprints may be provided. The lettering should be large enough to permit photographic reduction.
Half-tone illustrations may be included. They should be submitted as clear black-and-white prints on glossy paper.
Colour illustrations will have to be approved by the Editors. All additional costs of colour reproduction will be charged to the author(s).
Tables should bear a short descriptive title and should also be typed on separate sheets.
Gene accession numbers In the electronic version of a published manuscript, gene accession numbers will be linked directly to the gene's description in NCBI's Nucleotide sequence database. The accession number should be formatted as follows:
Accession no. AJ315850
and in the text e.g. ". . . at the amino acid sequence level to the human IDN3 gene (Accession No. AJ315850)."
The production department will then link this reference when they find it in the text. Authors should DOUBLE-CHECK the number they use to make absolutely sure that it is correct before referring to it in their paper. Accession numbers in proofs should also always be checked for correctness. The number is an essential part of the link.
Preparation of Supplementary Material: Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier web products, including ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com). In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file formats. Files can be stored on 3?inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. For more detailed instructions please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com.
References should be cited in the text by the authors' names and year of publication (Harvard system).
For books: authors' names and initials, year of publication, title of article, title of book preceded by 'In:', first and last page numbers.
For edited volumes: lnitial(s) and name(s), followed by '(Eds)', publisher's name and city, then first and last page numbers. Reference to a work by more than two authors should give the name of the first author only followed by 'et al.'
References cited in the text should be given at the end of the paper, arranged in alphabetical order of first author. Must consist of names and initials of all authors, year, full title of paper, abbreviated title of periodical, and volume and first and last page numbers.
More than one paper from the same author(s) in the same year should be identified by the letters a,b,c, etc., after the year of publication. Examples:
Pereira, M.A. and Chang, L.W. (1981) Binding of chemical carcinogens and mutagens to rat hemoglobin. Chem.- Biol. Interact. 22, 301-305.
Weisberger, E.K. (1988) Carcinogenic halogenated aliphatic compounds. In: P. Politzer and F.J. Martin, Jr. (Eds), Chemical Carcinogens. Activation Mechanisms, Structural and Electronic Factors, and Reactivity, Elsevier, Amsterdam, pp. 91-113.
Electronic Manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the re-keying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs.
Both PC and Macintosh formats are acceptable. Authors should specify in their cover letter the format and version used for generating both the text and graphic files.
Accepted formats are: Text (PDF, MS Word, or WordPerfect), Graphics (PDF, Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, CorelDraw, or TIFF, Excel or JPEG graphics that have been cut and pasted as separate files in MS word). Further information on electronic submission of artwork may be obtained at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.
Please specify the type of computer and word-processing package used.
Authors in North America, Central America, or South America please note: you are encouraged to submit the manuscripts electronically either as e-mail attachments (toxamer@d.umn.edu) or on disk to the Managing Editor for the Americas. No paper version is needed. Note that this relates to manuscripts only for general articles, not for section articles.
Authors in Japan please note: Upon request, Elsevier Science Japan will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Science Japan, 9-15, Higashi-Azabu 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044; Japan; Tel. (+81) 3-5561-5032; Fax: (+81)3-5561- 5045; E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp.
Proofs, Reprints and Author Inquiries: One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. No alteration of the substance of the text, tables or figures will be allowed at this stage. Corrected proofs should be returned to the publisher within two days of receipt. Twenty-five reprints are provided free of charge, and additional copies (minimum 100) can be ordered at prices shown on the price list accompanying the Reprint Order Form which will be sent with the proofs.
Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication. Subsequent corrections will not be possible, so please ensure your first sending is complete.
