About the journal
Terra Nova publishes short, innovative and provocative papers of interest to a wide readership and covering the broadest spectrum of the Solid Earth and Planetary Sciences. Terra Nova encompasses geology, geophysics and geochemistry, and extends to the fluid envelopes (atmosphere, ocean, environment) whenever coupling with the Solid Earth is involved.
Instructions to Authors
Terra Nova publishes short, innovative and provocative papers of interest to a wide readership and covering the full range of the solid Geosciences and Planetary Sciences including the interfaces with the hydrosphere and atmosphere.
Contributions should not exceed 2500 words (Excluding references or figure captions). There is no limit on number of references or figures within reason; figures will be sized appropriately for the detail of their content. Abstracts should be short (max 150 words) and should:
explain why the topic is of importance: Terra Nova has a wide geoscientific readership;
emphasize the novel points without summarizing all the content.
Review articles may be up to 8000 words maximum and are generally commissioned by Scientific or Associate Editors. The Editors' decision to accept or reject a manuscript is final.
Submitted manuscripts should contain previously unreported material. Authors are encouraged to present full data in support of their discussion and conclusions. The overlap of contents between related papers should be at a minimum, normally confined to the introductory/review section. Authors should provide information and preprints of any papers closely related to the manuscript submitted, which are not yet published (in review, in press).
For multi-author papers it is assumed that all authors have approved the manuscript and agree to its submission. Covering letters with the manuscript should designate the corresponding author, include the names and addresses of three possible, unbiased reviewers and a statement that the manuscript or parts thereof have not been previously published and have not been submitted elsewhere for publication. The letter should also state what fraction of the paper comprises previously unreported material. The final choice of referees is by the Editors or Associate Editors.
Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted on disk, in Word format and figures as .gif or .jpg, together with a hardcopy print-out, and the letter of submission should be sent to:
Terra Nova Editorial Office Blackwell Publishing Ltd 9600 Garsington Road Oxford OX4 2DQ UK E-mail: mailto:jenny.troyano@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com
The manuscript, including references and figure captions, must be double spaced, typed on one side only of A4-size or similar paper with 2.5 cm margin and numbered consecutively. Manuscripts must be in English, and spelling should conform to the Concise Oxford Dictionary. On acceptance of their paper, authors are requested to submit a DOS or Macintosh Disk containing the final version, noting software type and any special characters (non-keyboard) used.
Submit the manuscript in the following order: Title page (with article title, authors names and addresses, telephone, fax and e-mail of the corresponding author, and abstract), text, acknowledgements, references, figure captions and tables. Where possible please supply the title page information digitally at submission. Give all measurements in metric units. Hand-written mathematical symbols are acceptable for review purposes but not in final copy. Prepare each table on a separate sheet, double spaced, with a title.
Abstract
This should not not exceed 150 words and must emphasize the novel aspects and summarize the main findings of the paper for a general geosciences reader.
Illustrations
Illustrations may include line drawings (preferably by laser printout), photographs, black and white patterned geological maps and cross sections, etc. The maximum available space for an illustration, including caption, is 276 ¡Á 210 mm, but figures should be prepared with lettering and symbols of sufficient size and clarity to be reduced to 52 mm, 109 mm or 166 mm widths Photocopies of line drawings, but not of photographs, are acceptable for review purposes. Where possible, digital versions of your figures should be included on the disk submitted after acceptance. Ideally these should be sent in native format or PICT if created on a Mac, or in native format or WMF if created in Windows. Files saved as EPS, GIF and TIF may also be used, but please note that it may not be possible to modify them. (See digital illustration standards). Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse as this aids their clear reproduction.
Coloured illustrations are welcome but should only be used when details cannot be adequately observed on black and white photographs. Authors must contribute to the cost of coloured illustrations, currently £49.50 + VAT at 17.5% per full page or part of a page. Authors must signify their willingness to pay the standard charge by completing and returning the colour work agreement form supplied by the Editorial Manager. Following publication the author will be requested to pay on an invoice sent by Blackwell Science. Colour can be reproduced free of charge within the online version of the Journal.
References
References should be inserted in parentheses in the text in full for single and dual authored papers (e.g. Lyell and Bertrtand, 1987), but using first author and et al. for multiple authored papers (e.g. Lyell et al., 1988). List in alphabetical order at the end of the article in the following standard form:

Tavarnelli, E., 1996. Ancient synsedimentary structural control on thrust ramp development; an example from the Northern Apennines. Terra Nova, 8, 65-74.
Proofs and Offprints
Manuscripts are copy-edited after acceptance. The author(s) will receive page proofs by email that should be corrected and returned within 48 hours. 25 offprints will be provided free of charge for each article published. Additional offprints may be ordered using the form which will accompany the PDF proofs. Unless requested otherwise, the original manuscripts and illustrations will be discarded one month after publication.
PLEASE NOTE
Terra Nova articles now appear online, before the printed version, at www.blackwell-synergy.com in the OnlineEarly section of Terra Nova: the publication date of the article is the date it appears on OnlineEarly. Late corrections cannot therefore be made as the online and print editions must have identical content.
Cover material
The Editor invites submission of suitable cover images for Terra Nova which can relate to papers within issues or be stand-alone images of interest to geoscientists. Relevant captions should be provided.
Copyright Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). To assist authors the editorial office will supply an appropriate copyright assignment form. Alternatively authors may like to download a copy here.
