Studies in Applied Mathematics explores the interplay between mathematics and the applied disciplines. Contributors report research results involving the core concepts of applied mathematics research, including propagation, equilibrium, stability, optimization, and discrete and random processes. These come from a range of related fields, including computer science, mechanics, astrophysics, geophysics, and high-energy physics, and often involve statistics, probability, combinatorics, numerical analysis, and fluid dynamics.
There are two volumes published in each calendar year. Volumes 106 and 107 of Studies in Applied Mathematics are published in 2001.

Submission of Manuscripts
Send four copies of the manuscript to the editor:
Professor David J. Benney Studies in Applied Mathematics c/o Department of Mathematics Room 2-341 MIT 77 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA 02139 USA
The contents must represent original and unpublished work and the paper should not be considered for publication elsewhere.
Use standard paper and type on only one side. Double-space all lines, including footnotes and references. The title page should include the authors, their complete affiliations and contact information, key words, and a short abstract. Acknowledgments, if any, should appear on the title page as a footnote.
Begin with an introductory section that briefly summarizes the main results and explains the paper's significance and contribution to mathematics. Main headings, and all items requiring numbers (e.g., Lemmas, Theorems, Corollaries, and Propositions), should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper. The statements themselves should be in italics. If it is necessary to number display equations, they should be numbered on the right, consecutively throughout the paper. Secondary headings should be double-numbered by section (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, etc.). Mathematical symbols should be in italics unless, of course, another typeface is necessary (e.g., boldface, roman). A short concluding section may be useful for summarizing the technical results in a qualitative fashion.
The backmatter should appear as follows: appendix (if any), references, footnotes (if any) numbered consecutively starting with 1, and author(s) affiliation(s).
References should be cited in the text in order of appearance by number [1]. References at the end of the manuscript should be arranged by number and follow the style of these examples:
1. J. HUNTER and J. B. KELLER. Weakly nonlinear high frequency waves, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 36:547-569 (1983).
2. J. SMOLLER, Shock Waves and Reaction-Diffusion Equations, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1983.
Electronic Submissions
Submitting electronic files along with manuscripts can expedite the production process, and ensure accuracy. Submissions not prepared using a variant of TEX (e.g., LATEX, AMS-TEX) should be sent in both native (e.g., Microsoft word) and ASCII forms.
Once the paper is accepted, authors are requested to submit to the editor (David Benney) a computer disk (3.5' HD/DD disk) containing the final version of the paper along with four hard copies: double spaces, one-sided. (The electronic version should be an exact match to the hard copies except that the electronic version should be single-spaced, while hard copies should be double-spaced.) With regard to other details: do not use the wraparound end-of-line feature (i.e., no returns at the end of each line) or paragraph indentations; but do use two returns after each sectioning element such as title, headings, paragraphs, and figure legends.
Please label all disks with the following information: type of computer used (IBM-compatible PC or Apple Macintosh), operating system, program, version number, and authors' names. A backup disk for reference should be maintained..
Artwork should be submitted as EPS (preferred), PostScript, or TIFF files. Please make sure that a hard copy of the art file(s) is submitted along with the disk version. |
