About the journal

Description

Solar Energy, the official journal of the International Solar Energy Society?/A>, is devoted exclusively to the science and technology of solar energy applications. The Society was founded in 1954 and is now incorporated as a non-profit educational and scientific institution. With participation encompassing 100 countries, ISES?serves as a centre for information on research and development in solar energy utilisation. Through its publications and its sponsorship of technical conferences, the Society provides a world forum for the active consideration of solar energy.
Solar Energy welcomes manuscripts presenting information not previously published in journals on any aspect of solar energy research, development, application, measurement or policy. The term "solar energy" in this context includes the indirect uses such as wind energy and biomass. Because of the international character of Solar Energy, articles that deal solely with the solar radiation or wind data base of a specific country are not normally considered suitable for Solar Energy. Submitted manuscripts may take the form of reports of original studies or reviews of significant prior work in a given area. All manuscripts are subject to reviews to assure accuracy, clarity, and long-term value.
Manuscripts of general interest not being suitable for Solar Energy should be submitted to
Refocus, which publishes magazine-style feature articles concerning all aspects of renewable energy. Please e-mail Paul Spencer, Editor for further details ( p.spencer@elsevier.co.uk) and visit http://www.re-focus.net.

Audience

Engineers, scientists, architects and economists active in the fields of systems, components, materials and services for the diverse applications of solar energy

SUBMISSIONS
Manuscripts are to be submitted in the style and format out-lined below. Manuscripts can be emailed directly to the Editor, or submitted on-line via the Author Gateway. Please see the Elsevier website:
http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/solener

Please submit the manuscript via email as a zipped attachment. If this is not possible it will be acceptable to send the manuscript on disk (no printed copy is necessary) to the Editor at the following address:

Only texts in the English language can be accepted. Authors may be members or non-members of ISES? Those who are ISES?members should indicate their affiliation on the title page of their manuscript.

ON-LINE SUBMISSION
The easy-to-use submission system features a wide range of functions and capabilities designed to streamline the submission procedure. Please see the Gateway for complete instructions:
http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/solener.

As well as benefiting authors, e-submission facilitates the entire editorial process:

Submitted file is sent by the Editor to selected reviewers via e-mail

System automatically informs author of every step of the peer review process

Data is regularly backed up on Elsevier's secure servers

After acceptance authors can track their paper through the stages of production right up to publication

Articles can be uploaded from Microsoft?(MS) Word?/I> or WordPerfect?/I> only. The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the file is suitable for reviewing. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by email and no paper correspondence is necessary. PDF files are only acceptable during the review process. Upon their acceptance for publication, the Editorial Office must be sent the paper in an editable format.

Note for on-line submission of revised articles:
All authors using the on-line submission tool to submit revised articles to the journal should highlight this in their cover letter and quote the two individual reference numbers allocated to the paper by the Author Gateway and the Editorial Office.

STATEMENT OF FIRST PRINTING
Authors must state that the paper has never been published before (i.e. "This manuscript material neither has been published in nor submitted to a journal previously. The author (s) have read these instructions and adhered to them.")

TEXT PREPARATION ON DISK
Elsevier encourages on-line submission however, manuscripts can be emailed directly to the Editorial Office. Postal mailing a disk is acceptable if emailing is impossible. Specify what software was used, including which release (e.g. Word 97) and specify what computer was used (either IBM?compatible PC or Apple Macintosh?. Please do not submit files in LaTeX as the Editorial Office cannot open them. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained at
http://authors.elsevier.com.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
General: All copies of the manuscript must be double-spaced, single column, with ample margins, and a font size of 10 or 12 pt is required. Papers must be no longer than 20 pages. No lower limit is enforced. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and a footnote (including a fax number and e-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors.

Abstract: The essential contents of each paper must be briefly recapitulated in an abstract. References should not appear in the Abstract.

Text: Each manuscript should be presented in the following order: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Tables, Figure captions, Figures. The text should be organized under appropriate section headings. All headings should be placed on the left-hand side of the text, with a double line space above and below.
All measurements should be given in metric (SI) units.
The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. The technical description of the methods used should only be given in detail when such methods are new.

Appendix: Mathematical analyses and other material, the details of which are subordinate to the main theme of the paper, should normally be put into one or more appendices. Equations in appendices are labelled (A1), (A2), etc. Figures and Tables are labelled with an "A" as well (Fig. A1, Table A1).

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references with the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. Henderson, 1982). For three or more authors, use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text (e.g. Davis et al., 1996). The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.

Tables: Each table must be typed on a separate page. Each table must be referred to in the text. Column heads and units of measure must be clearly indicated. Tables (along with their footnotes or captions) should be understandable without reference to the text. Each table must have a caption. Include table captions with table (not on a separate page).

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. Revised final article figures may not be included inline within the text, but may be placed at the end of the text, on separate pages. It is also acceptable to send figures as separate files (.TIF, .EPS). All figures are to have a caption. A list of captions must be supplied on a separate page. For specific enquires on the preparation of electronic artwork, consult http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Computer-generated black and white illustrations and halftones/line/tones are acceptable. Colour figures are not recommended; the author will be responsible for the cost of printing them.

TIFF or EPS files are preferred when preparing electronic graphic files. Suggested packages for line graphics are Adobe Illustrator, Freehand and CorelDRAW. Graphics made in WordPerfect or WORD generally have low resolution. Please scan your half tones at 300 dpi (or greater) and line-tones at 500 dpi (or greater).

Try to create your graphics near to their print size, by looking at previously published manuscripts. This will help with the lettering and resolution of your files, as the resolution will be lost if we have to enlarge a file and lettering may need re-keying if the file has to be reduced significantly as the final font size should be about 6-8 pt. Always use the standard Adobe set of fonts.

PROOFS
PDF Proofs will be emailed to the corresponding author; if no corresponding author is named, they will be emailed to the first named author. Corrections should be returned by e-mail within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return and send all corrections in one communication, since late corrections cannot be accepted. Where paper proofs are provided, corrections should be returned within 48 hours of receipt to: Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon, EX1 2AH, UK; fax: +44 (0)1392 426436.

Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will include a 50% surcharge.

COPYRIGHT
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This process is handled by Elsevier, and will take place after the author's paper is accepted for publication and shipped to Elsevier. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd. to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations.
This includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
