About the journal

Semigroup Forum is a platform for speedy and efficient transmission of information on current research in semigroup theory.

Scope: Algebraic semigroups, topological semigroups, partially ordered semigroups, semigroups of measures and harmonic analysis on semigroups, transformation semigroups, semigroups of operators, and applications of semigroup theory to other disciplines such as ring theory, category theory, automata, logic, etc.

Languages: English (preferred), French, German, Russian.

Survey Articles: Expository, such as a symposium lecture. Of any length. May include original work, but should present the nonspecialist with a reasonably elementary and self-contained account of the fundamental parts of the subject.

Research Articles: Will be subject to the usual refereeing procedure.

Research Announcements: Description, limited to eight pages, of new results, mostly without proofs, of full length papers appearing elsewhere. The announcement must be accompanied by a copy of the unabridged version.

Short Notes: (Maximum 4 pages) Worthy of the readers' attention, such as new proofs, significant generalizations of known facts, comments on unsolved problems, historical remarks, etc.

Research Problems: Unsolved research problems.

Announcements: Of conferences, seminars, and symposia on Semigroup Theory.

Abstracts and Bibliographical Items: Abstracts in English, limited to one page, of completed work are solicited.

Listings of books, papers, and lecture notes previously published elsewhere and, above all, of new papers for which preprints are available are solicited from all authors.

Abstracts for Reviewing Journals: Authors are invited to provide with their manuscript informally a one-page abstract of their contribution with key words and phrases and with subject matter classification. This material will be forwarded to Zentralblatt f¨¹r Mathematik.

Offprints: Fifty offprints without covers will be supplied without charge to the first author of each article. Additional offprints may be ordered with prepayment only on forms obtainable from the Managing Editors. No offprints are supplied for Short Notes, Announcements, Abstracts, or Bibliographical Items.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions to Contributors for the Preparation of TeXscripts for Direct Reproduction

Contributions may be submitted to any one of the editors.
Semigroup Forum is produced by utilizing TeX source files prepared by the authors. The journal strongly encourages authors to submit electronically prepared manuscripts by electronic mail to any member of the Editorial Board.

Authors who have no access to TeX should submit their paper as ordinary typescript. If accepted for publication, its final version will be formatted in TeX by the editors.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for Print

General

Send illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files). Always send printouts of all illustrations.

Vector (line) Graphics

Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.

Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.

No rules narrower than .25 pt.

No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%.

Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%.

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

Black & white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.

Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans*

Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300 ppi TIFF files.

Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.

Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

* We do prefer having the original art as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of critical medical halftones.

Graphics from Videos

Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for ONLINE

Video

Quicktime (.mov) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mpg, etc. are acceptable.

No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.
