General
Scandinavian Journal of Immunology is an international journal of immunology which publishes papers within the various fields of cellular and molecular immunology. We very much welcome international papers and hope that all international investigators of immunology will find the journal suitable for their publications. The scientific standard is the only criterion for accepting a manuscript for publication. All papers are published in English.
Manuscripts should be submitted either to one of the Editors-in-Chief or to one of the Editors, whose addresses are given on the "Editors" page. Reviews should be sent directly to the Reviews Editor:
S. Meri Department of Bacteriology and Immunology PO Box 21 Haartman Institute FIN-00014, University of Helsinki Helsinki, Finland
Papers are accepted for publication on the condition that they are submitted only to this journal. A completed copyright assignment form must be included with the submitted manuscript. All authors should sign a statement that they agree to submitting the manuscript to the journal for publication.
Frontlines Section
Frontlines of Scandinavian Journal of Immunology will publish brief definitive papers of exceptional interest to the immunologic community. The section is a forum for presentations of the very latest findings resulting from original immunology research or frontline reviews and commentaries. In particular, Frontlines invites submission of research manuscripts reporting on significant results of potential strong impact in the field. Investigators are encouraged to submit their original work in Frontlines at a stage prior to the development of a full-length paper. Manuscripts submitted to Frontlines will receive the urgent attention of the journal to guarantee rapid publication. Provided that manuscripts conform to the Instructions to Authors, the Frontlines section offers rapid publication, normally within 3 months of submission. Authors will be notified within a maximum of 3-4 weeks following submission as to the result of the review process.
Frontlines submissions should be marked with 'Frontlines'. Four copies of the manuscript, one original set of high quality figures and tables plus three copies should be sent to the Frontlines editors (N. Lycke or F. Vartdal) at any of the three editorial addresses.
Authors should follow the detailed instructions given for full-length papers in the Instructions to Authors section.
Frontlines manuscripts should only, in exceptional cases, exceed four printed pages (including figures, tables and references), i.e. not more than approximately 10-12 manuscript pages and three illustrations. An abstract of no more than 200 words should be included. A brief and focused Introduction should be followed by a sharply limited but sufficiently informative Materials and Methods section to allow the evaluation of results and conclusions. The Results and Discussion sections may be amalgamated. Please list the telephone and fax numbers as well as the e-mail address of the corresponding author on the title page.
Regular Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced throughout, on one side of the paper, with a 5-cm wide margin. Authors should submit the original manuscript with three additional copies. Separate sheets should be used for the following: (1) title page, with the author's name, institution, telephone and fax numbers and email address, and, if the title is longer than 40 letters and spaces, a short title not exceeding this limit for use in the running heads; (2) an abstract not exceeding 200 words; (3) tables with their headings; (4) legends to figures; (5) references. The name and full postal address, plus telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the author to whom proofs and offprints are to be sent should appear under the abstract. Brief acknowledgments of grants and other assistance, if any, will be printed at the end of the text.
Manuscripts on Disk
As most papers are accepted for publication after revision, please supply the revised manuscript on floppy disk along with the print-outs. The original and three copies of the manuscript must always be submitted in typewritten form.
When supplying a disk we ask that these instructions are followed:
The final version of the hard copy and the floppy disk must be the same. It is essential that the disk contains any last minute changes.
File name(s) should be given with the disk, with separate file names for: text, references, tables, figure captions.
If possible files should be supplied in both word processor and ASCII formats.
Be consistent. Use the same presentation for all headings, etc. that are to appear the same in the finished printing.
Special characters. We will need to know if you have used a keyboard character to represent a character that is not on your keyboard, e.g. Greek.
Tables should be supplied as a separate file on your disk. Hard copies must also be enclosed.
Advise us about any matter that you think could cause a problem.
File Description Forms are available from the Editorial office.
Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph.
Turn the hyphenation option off.
Disks will not be returned to authors.
Abbreviations
Any non-standard abbreviations (to be avoided if possible) should be properly defined in the text the first time they are used.
Nomenclature
Authors should use the nomenclature presented by the WHO-IUIS Nomenclature Sub-Committee on T Cell Receptor Designation.
For the designation of TCR genes of mouse and man authors should follow the new nomenclature as published by the TCR Sub-Committee (Immunogenetics 42, 451, 1995).
Tables
Tables should be typed on separate pages and numbered with arabic numerals. They should be understandable without reference to the text. Each table should have a descriptive heading. Conditions specific to the particular experiment(s) should be stated below the table. Units in which the results are expressed should appear at the top of each column. Footnotes should be kept to a minimum.
Figures
The author must submit three copies of each figure, at least one of which must be original and suitable for reproduction. Figures must be numbered in sequence with arabic numerals. Each figure should be identified by the name of the author and the number of the figure, written in pencil on the back. The top should be indicated.
Each figure should have a legend containing sufficient information to make the figure intelligible without reference to the text. All the legends must be typed together, in double spacing, on a separate sheet or sheets. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. It is preferred that the symbols used to identify results shown on a figure be explained on the figure itself. Line drawing and lettering should be in Indian ink. Graphs should be plotted on blue graph or plain white paper; grid lines that are to show in the engraving should be inked in black. Photographs to be included in the text should be submitted as unmounted glossy enlargements showing good details.
Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse.
Authors are expected to contribute towards the cost of colour reproduction. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:

Colour reproduction may be available free of charge at the Editors' discretion. Please correspond with the Editors-in-Chief on acceptance of the manuscript.
Electronic Artwork
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS) and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available at www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm. Always enclose a hard copy of digitally supplied figures.
References
The Scandinavian Journal of Immunology has now adopted the Vancouver Reference System and all submitted manuscripts should be in this style.
The references should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by arabic numerals [in brackets]. References cited only in tables or in legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration.
The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus.
Published abstracts can be used as references. Manuscripts accepted but not yet published can also be included in the references; designate the journal followed by 'in press' (in parentheses). Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be cited in the text as 'unpublished observations' (in parentheses). 'Unpublished observations' and 'personal communications' may not be used as references, although references to written, not verbal, communications may be inserted (in parentheses) in the text.
Examples of correct forms of references are given below.
