About the journal

 Public Health Reports

Public Health Reports, the official journal of the U.S. Public Health Service, is now being published by Elsevier, Inc. ASPH has been a partner in the publication of Public Health Reports since 1999 and we are very much looking forward to working with Elsevier to promote the journal.

PHR has established itself as one of the Public Health Community's key information resources in the public health field for over 125 years. We appreciate your past support of PHR, and would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to continue your subscription to the Journal.

We publish this peer-reviewed journal bi-monthly--six issues offering articles in three main areas: public health practice, research, and viewpoints/commentaries. In the past five years we have tackled such topics as tobacco control, teenage violence, occupational disease and injury, immunization, drug policy, lead screening, health disparities, and many other key issues. The Journal's authors are on the front line of public health, and we present their work in a readable and accessible format.

In addition to these articles, each edition offers recurring columns such as Law and the Public's Health (introduced in 2003), News and Notes, NCHS Dataline, and ASPH - From the Schools of Public Health. Beginning in 2004, each issue of Public Health Reports will include a column on public health/medical history called Public Health Chronicles.

ASPH has also entered into a collaborative agreement with NACCHO, ASTHO, NALBOH and CSTE so that each member of these organizations receives a free copy of PHR. We hope this arrangement will strengthen existing partnerships between academia and practice.

Instructions to Authors

Submissions for publication in Public Health Reports can be sent to either the Office of Public Health Reports for publication in the journal or to ASPH for publication in ASPH's four-page section of the journal.

Contributions to the journal should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to BioMedical Journals, which can be found at http://www.acponline.org/journals/resource/unifreqr.htm. These contributions can include letters to the editor, brief news announcements (500-word maximum), viewpoints and commentaries and either feature, research or practice articles.

Contributions by ASPH member faculty are also needed for the ASPH section of the journal. The ASPH section of the journal is up to four pages in length and features articles written by ASPH faculty that highlight practice-based activities at the schools. To submit an article to this section of Public Health Reports, faculty should send a short abstract (50-100 words) via email to Allison Foster, ASPH Deputy Executive Director, at afoster@asph.org. Abstracts will be forwarded to a committee of SPH faculty for review. If a full article is requested, the article may be up to 3,000 words, adjusted for any graphics to be included. In some cases, two separate articles will be published simultaneously, so shorter articles are also welcome. Inclusion of graphics and/or pictures in the articles is encouraged.
