    Public Health Nutrition     

Public Health Nutrition is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing original research papers, topical review articles, Letters to the Editors, editorials and invited commentaries, and book reviews. The journal offers a population based approach to the practical application of research findings.

Instructions to Authors

 

Public Health Nutrition will provide a forum for the presentation of original research findings in the field of public health nutrition. It aims to offer a population based approach to the practical application of research findings. The journal will provide a timely vehicle for lively discussion of current controversies. In addition it will also include high quality reviews of key topics and seek to identify and publish special supplements on major topics of interest to readers. As a contributor you should note and follow the guidelines set out below.

 

Content Original research findings - published as either full papers of 4000 words or short communications of around 2000 words on key issues, fast-tracked through the editorial system. Topical review papers - the Editors will invite topical reviews and also consider suggestions from authors who should submit an outline of the review in the first instance. Editorial comment - including guest editorials on key papers published in the journal Letters to the Editors - addressing material published in Public Health Nutrition

 

Refereeing All contributions will be read by two or more referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and revision may thus be required before final acceptance. On acceptance, contributions are subject to editorial amendment to suit house style. Authors are asked to submit the names and contact details (including an e-mail address if available) of up to four potential referees for their paper.

 

Copyright Papers should be accompanied by a signed statement to the effect that the author accepts the conditions laid down in these Notes for Authors. Contributors of accepted articles will be asked to assign their copyright, on certain conditions, to The Nutrition Society to help protect their material. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to quote material that has appeared in another publication.

 

Preparation of Manuscripts You should write in clear and concise English. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors whose native tongue is not English are assured that in-house editorial attention to their contribution will improve clarity to readers. Manuscripts should be typed, on one side of the paper only, with double line spacing and ample margins (at least 1.5 cm) on each side. Do not underline anything. Number every sheet. Draft-quality print from a word-processor is not acceptable. Standard abbreviations (e.g. Fig. and Figs) and SI units must be used. When a paper has been accepted, submission of word-processed text stored on floppy disk is encouraged, providing the software is IBM/DOS compatible, but floppy disks must be accompanied by a hard copy. This will enable papers to be handled rapidly, and with fewer typesetting errors.

 

Arrangement of Papers 1. Title page including the article title, author(s), affiliation(s), keywords and one author identified for correspondence (please include the full postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and an e-mail address where available). 2. A structured abstract using the following headings: Objective, Design, Setting, Subjects, Results, Conclusions. The abstracts should be intelligible without reference to text or figures. It should not exceed 250 words in total. A short title of up to 45 characters should be provided as a running head. 3. The text divided under appropriate headings. 4. Acknowledgements (if any). 5. References 6. Tables (each on a separate sheet). 7. Captions to illustrations (group on a separate sheet or sheets). 8. Illustrations, each on a separate sheet containing no text. All submissions should be accompanied by a written declaration that the paper has not been submitted for consideration elsewhere. Details of submission on disk are available from the Publishing Division at CAB INTERNATIONAL, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK.

 

Tables Tables should be reduced to the simplest form, and should not be used where text or illustrations give the same information. They should be submitted on separate sheets at the end of the article and must fit conveniently into single-column or landscape (if absolutely necessary) format. Each table must be accompanied by a clear and concise caption.

 

Illustrations Copies only of artwork should be submitted. The original illustrations should accompany the paper after acceptance and revision. Text figures, line drawings, computer-generated figures and graphs should be of sufficient size and quality to allow for reduction. Avoid the use of grey tints or complex hatching. Half-tone photographs are acceptable where they make a real contribution to the text. Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet and numbered corresponding to the relevant Figures.

 

References References should follow the Vancouver system. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they first appear in the text using superscript Arabic numerals. Please ensure that references are complete, i.e. that they include, where relevant, author name(s), article or book title, volume and issue number, publisher, and page reference.

 

Proofs Correspondence and proofs for correction will be sent to the first named author unless otherwise indicated. The author will receive page proofs for checking, but it is hoped to correct only typesetting errors. It is important that proofs be returned promptly. Authors may be charged for any alterations in excess of 10% of original setting.

 

Offprints The main author will receive 50 offprints of the paper and one copy of the published issue free of charge. Extra copies of offprints (minimum 100) can be ordered prior to publication.
