About the journal

Psychological Bulletin

Psychological Bulletin publishes evaluative and integrative research reviews and interpretations of issues in scientific psychology. Primary research is reported only for illustrative purposes. Integrative reviews or research syntheses focus on empirical studies and seek to summarize past research by drawing overall conclusions from many separate investigations that address related or identical hypotheses. A research synthesis typically presents the authors' assessments of (a) the state of knowledge concerning the relations of interest, (b) critical assessments of the strengths and weaknesses in past research, and (c) important issues that research has left unresolved, thereby directing future research so it can yield a maximum amount of new information. Both cumulative and historical approaches (i.e., ones that organize a research literature by highlighting temporally unfolding developments in a field) can be used. Integrative research reviews that develop connections between areas of research are particularly valuable. Manuscripts dealing with topics at the interface of psychological sciences and society are welcome, as are evaluations of applied psychological therapies, programs, and interventions. Expository articles may be published if they are deemed accurate, broad, clear, and pertinent. Methodological articles that previously were submitted to Psychological Bulletin should now be submitted to Psychological Methods. Original theoretical articles should be submitted to Psychological Review, even when they include summaries of research. Research syntheses should be submitted to Psychological Bulletin even when they develop integrated theoretical statements.

according to the instructions provided below.

Authors should submit three printed copies of each manuscript in addition to the electronic version submitted through the portal. If the submission portal is not used, authors should include a diskette with an electronic version of the manuscript along with the printed copies. All copies should be clear, readable, and on paper of good quality. An unusual typeface is acceptable only if it is clear and legible. In addition to addresses and phone numbers, authors should supply electronic mail addresses and fax numbers, if available, for potential use by the editorial office and later by the production office. Authors should keep a copy of the manuscript to guard against loss.

Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). All manuscripts must include an abstract containing a maximum of 120 words typed on a separate page. Formatting instructions and instructions on preparing tables, figures, references, metrics, and abstracts appear in the Publication Manual. Also, all manuscripts are copyedited for bias-free language (see chap. 2 of the Publication Manual). Original color figures can be printed in color at the editor's discretion and provided the author agrees to pay half of the associated production costs; and estimate of these costs is available from the APA production office on request.

The identities of authors of syntheses will be withheld from reviewers until after determining the final disposition of the manuscript. Authors are responsible for the preparation of manuscripts to permit masked review. The first page of the printed manuscript should omit the author's names and affiliations but should include the title of the manuscript and the date it was submitted. A separate cover sheet should show the title of the manuscript, the authors' names and affiliations, the date the manuscript was submitted, and any footnotes (e.g., Author Note) containing information pertaining to the authors' identify or affiliations. Manuscripts submitted electronically should include the information on the separate cover sheet in the transmittal letter. Every effort should be made to ensure that the manuscript itself contains no clues to the authors' identities, including deletion of easily identified self-references from the list. If an author feels that revealing his or her identity is critical to receiving a fair review, such a request along with its justification should be made in the cover letter accompanying the manuscript.

Authors are required to obtain and provide to APA all necessary permissions to reproduce any copyrighted work, including, for example, test instruments and other test materials or portions thereof.

APA policy prohibits an author from submitting the same manuscript for concurrent consideration by two or more publications. In addition, it is a violation of APA Ethical Principles to publish "as original data, data that have been previously published" (Standard 8.13). As this journal is a primary journal that publishes original material only, APA policy prohibits as well publication of any manuscript that has already been published in whole or substantial part elsewhere. Authors have an obligation to consult journal editors concerning prior publication of any data on which their article depends.

In addition, APA Ethical Principles specify that "after research results are published, psychologists do not withhold the data on which their conclusions are based from other competent professionals who seek to verify the substantive claims through reanalysis and who intend to use such data only for that purpose, provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and unless legal rights concerning proprietary data preclude their release" (Standard 8.14). APA expects authors submitting to this journal to adhere to these standards. Specifically, authors of manuscripts submitted to APA journals are expected to have available their data throughout the editorial review process and for at least 5 years after the date of publication.

Authors will be required to state in writing that they have complied with APA ethical standards in the treatment of their sample, human or animal, or to describe the details of treatment. A copy of the APA Ethical Principles may be obtained electronically or by writing the APA Ethics Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242.

APA requires authors to reveal any possible conflict of interest in the conduct and reporting of research (e.g., financial interests in a test or procedure, funding by pharmaceutical companies for drug research).
