Instructions to Authors

These notes are an abbreviated version of the full "Instructions to Authors" which are published in the first issue of each year. Phytochemistry covers research on all aspects of plant chemistry, plant biochemistry, plant molecular biology and chemical ecology. The journal is divided into the following sections: Editorial Comment, Molecules of Interest, Review Articles; Protein Biochemistry; Molecular Genetics and Genomics; Metabolism; Ecological Biochemistry; Chemotaxonomy; Bioactive Products and Chemistry (including Macromolecules). In addition to the regular (primary) issues of the journal, there are special issues dedicated solely to Structure Elucidation.

Submission of Papers

Phytochemistry manuscripts can be submitted by mail (post) or online using the new electronic submission system.

Submission by mail:
Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures with three other copies to the appropriate regional Editor:

UK, Africa , The Commonwealth and Rest of the World: Prof. G. P. Bolwell, School of Biological Sciences, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, Egham Hill, Egham, Surrey TW20 OEX;
The Americas and East Asia: Professor N. G. Lewis, Institute of Biological Chemistry, Washington State University, Pullman, WA 99164-6340, USA;
Continental Europe and Russia: Professor D. Strack, Institut fur Pflanzenbiochemie, Abt. Sekundarstoffwechsel, Weinberg 3, D-06120 Halle (Saale), Germany.

Authors must submit their fax number and e-mail address with their manuscript. The initial submission should consist of one original manuscript plus three other copies; after refereeing is complete and any necessary changes have been incorporated, the final (revised) copy should be furnished on floppy disk or CD with two paper copies. The disk and the hard copy must match exactly. Please label all disks with "Phytochemistry", your name, software, hardware used and file names with the correct extension (e.g. Fig1.cdx, tbl1-6.xls). Save text on a separate disk from the graphics, include the text and tables in one file, and provide graphics and structures in separate numbered files.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.
Outlines for review articles should be sent directly to one of the three regional Editors listed above.

Online submission:
Manuscripts can be submitted using the online submission and review environment. Authors are required to go to the website and upload their article and its associated artwork. A PDF file is generated, and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. All correspondence between Editor and author is performed by e-mail. Authors are, however, legally obliged to sign and return a physical transfer of copyright form by conventional mail. In their electronic version, authors are requested to follow the guidelines for submitting disks. The submission site and full instructions can be found at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/phytochem. The paper should be submitted as a single file, prepared with a standard word-processor such as Microsoft Word, with embedded tables and graphics. Please note that any embedded graphics must also be submitted as separate, original files. The preferred formats for graphics files are tiff or postscript.

Types of Contributions

Full length articles; review articles; accelerated publications. Additionally, succinct papers on structure elucidation will be published in special issues.

Outlines for review articles should be sent directly to one of the three regional Editors listed above.

Manuscript Preparation

General: The manuscript is required to be written in English, with numbered pages, double-spaced, using 10 or 12 point font, and in a suitable word-processing format. Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article. Please do not use options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts etc. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style (e.g. the free online sample copy available at www.elsevier.com/locate/phytochem). An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Abstracts: The abstract, distinct from the graphical abstract, should briefly describe the results obtained and conclusions reached and not the methods used or speculations on other matters. Authors must also supply a graphical abstract at the time that the paper is first submitted.
The graphical abstract should summarize the content of the paper in a concise, pictorial form designed to capture the attention of a wide readership. The manuscript title, author(s), author(s) affiliation and address with the appropriate text and graphic should be supplied.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Titles must be as brief as possible and should not exceed 10 words in length; Authors; Affiliations; Abstract; Keyword Index should comprise three to ten 'key words' or phrases which identify the most important subjects covered by the paper in the following order: name of plant species examined (Latin binomial), plant family, common epithet (where applicable), type of investigation, class of compound, compound(s); Main text; Acknowledgements; Appendix; References; Vitae; Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. Within the body of the text the Introduction should give the minimum historical data needed to set the scene for the author's own investigation. Authors are advised to combine the Results and Discussion sections wherever possible and are asked to avoid undue speculation. The Discussion should not include a repetition of the results, but should indicate the conclusions reached. The Experimental should be concise and the extensive use of abbreviations is essential (see full 'Instructions to Authors').
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For 2 authors, both authors are to be listed, with "and" separating the two authors. For more than two authors, use the first author's surname followed by et al. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:

Cabello-Hurtado, F., Durst, F., Jorrin, J. V., Werck-Reichhart, D. 1998. Coumarins in Helianthus Tuberosus: Characterization, induced accumulation and biosynthesis. Phytochemistry 49, 1029-1036. Mabry, T., Markham, K. R., Thomas, M. B., 1970. The Systematic Identification of Flavonoids. Springer Verlag, New York.

Illustrations: All illustrations (including chemical structures) must be supplied camera-ready, for reproduction at single or double column width (83 mm or 176 mm, respectively). Please ensure that all illustrations within a paper are consistent in type and quality. Illustrations should be prepared with good contrast (black on a white background) and if produced by computer must be prepared at a resolution of 300 dpi or better. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations must be labeled with the figure or scheme number and the corresponding author's name (either on the back if submitted on paper or with a clear file name if using online submission). All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate page.
Line drawings: should be provided as carefully prepared black line drawings on a plain white background. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Each article can have one colour page reproduced free of charge; a charge for additional colour figures will be made.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate page. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Proofs

Proofs: One set of page proofs in PDF format will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author, to be checked for typesetting/editing. No changes in, or additions to, the accepted (and subsequently edited) manuscript will be allowed at this stage. Proofreading is solely your responsibility. A form with queries from the copyeditor may accompany your proofs. Please answer all queries and make any corrections or additions required within 48 hours of receipt.
As soon as proofs have been approved, they are published online as an "Article in Press" on the Phytochemistry page on ScienceDirect (www.sciencedirect.com). "Articles in Press" take full advantage of the enhanced ScienceDirect functionality, including the ability to be cited using their DOI article identifier. When the final article is assigned to an issue of the journal, the "Article in Press" version is removed and will appear in the associated journal issue.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints will be supplied to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. This order form should be returned promptly since the price of offprints ordered after publication is substantially higher and will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier Science has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact ES Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com<
