Instructions to Authors

Dear author,

In order to simplify the procedure of interaction between an author (coauthors) and the publisher we ask you to send agreements on transfer of copyright (in Russian or in English) simultaneously with the manuscript of the article to the editorial board of the journal. The agreement should be sent in duplicate.

This agreement is a contract of adhesion.

We draw your attention to the fact that the agreement enters into force under the condition of acceptance of an article for publication in English. If for any reason your article is refused by the editorial board of the journal, the agreement automatically loses force. The decision on acceptance of an article for publication is the exclusive right of the editorial board of the journal. Signing of the agreement by an author (coauthors) means that the author (coauthors) has acquainted himself (themselves) and agrees (agree) with the conditions of the agreement.

A copyright transfer agreement form can be downloaded at our site:

Model Author's Agreement Form

The completed and signed agreements may be presented in person or sent to the editorial board of the journal:

by post
by e-mail (PDF file) or fax; the original must be subsequently mailed by post.

Instructions for Contributors to the Journal Physics of the Solid State

The Journal publishes original articles and invited reviews on various fields of solid-state physics. The main sections of the Journal are as follows.

¡ªMetals and Superconductors
¡ªSemiconductors and Dielectrics
¡ªDefects and Impurity Centers, Dislocations, and Physics of Strength
¡ªOptical Properties
¡ªMagnetism and Ferroelectricity
¡ªLattice Dynamics and Phase Transitions
¡ªLow-Dimensional Systems and Surface Physics
¡ªPolymers and Liquid Crystals
¡ªFullerenes and Atomic Clusters

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are considered only if they are accompanied by a formal contract of copyright transfer. For information, please refer to http://www.ioffe.ru/journals/ftt/dogftt.doc
For an article to be published in English, authors must complete a contract form in duplicate. For further information, please refer to http://www.ioffe.ru/journals/ftt/dogftt-rus.doc
The contracts should be attached to the manuscript and sent to the editorial office.
The manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter from the institution where the work was performed. The manuscript must be signed by the author (authors), with full names, home addresses, affiliations, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses indicated. The authors should indicate who the author for correspondence is. The authors may suggest possible referees for their article. Articles that are rejected are not returned to the authors.

Two copies of the manuscript are required. The manuscript should be typed on one side and doublespaced throughout (approximately 30 lines per page, 60 characters per line using 12 or 14 font). The lefthand margin should be no less than 4 cm. Handwritten insets are not acceptable. All pages should be numbered.

Above the text of the article, the following data should be given:

¡ªthe section of the journal,
¡ªthe title of the article,
¡ªthe authors' initials and surnames (for foreign authors, in English or in the language of the article),
¡ªthe full name (without any abbreviations) of the institution where the work was performed and its address (postal index, city, country),
¡ªan e-mail address for correspondence.

Next should follow an abstract (no more than 0.5 type-written pages) not duplicating the introduction or the conclusion. The abstract must not contain references or abbreviations. At the end of the abstract, the PACS numbers should be given (instructions can be found at http://www.aip.org/pacs).

The institution or fund that supported the research should be indicated (with indication of the grant number) under the heading Acknowledgments, which is to come at the end of the article text, following the section Conclusions.

The article should be written in clear, precise language. Intermediate calculations should be omitted, and unwieldy formulas should be avoided. Authors should avoid repeating in the main text data presented in tables, graphs, and figure captions and should avoid representing the same numerical results in the form of both tables and graphs. If the article is divided into sections, there should be an Introduction and Conclusions. The sections should be numbered (using Arabic numerals) starting from the Introduction. The abbreviations used in the article should be explained in the main body of the text.

Measurement units and designations (in the main text, tables, and figures) must be given in Latin lettering.

Illustrations (photographs, diagrams, and graphs, all referred to as figures) must be given in duplicate. A minimum number of figures with a limited amount of detail should be used. All inscriptions in figures should be written in English.
Figures should be of high quality. Complicated figures should be recorded on a floppy disk.
Continuous-tone artwork should be submitted as photographs (with the upward direction indicated on the back side).
Below each figure, the authors' names, the title of the article, and the figure number should be indicated.
Figure captions should be given on a separate sheet. No graphical elements (circles, crosses, or other symbols) should be included in the captions.

Formulas should be written in large, legible handwriting.
Formulas should be numbered continuously throughout the article rather than separately for each section.

¡ªChemical formulas, mathematical symbols, abbreviations (including those in the indices), and measurement units should be in plain type.
¡ªOnly vector quantities should be written in boldface type (without an arrow over the character).
¡ªThe Greek, gothic, and manuscript-style letters used must be easily recognizable.
¡ªAll other symbols should be italicized.

Symbols that can easily be confused (such as capital and lowercase letters; Greek and Latin letters; the Arabic numeral 1 and the letter l; the letter I and the Roman numeral I; the numeral 1 and prime in indices) should be duplicated in the margins.
In the main text, the solidus should be used to designate the operation of division. For exponential functions, the sign ¡°exp¡± should be used.

Each table should be typed on a separate sheet to be included in the numbering of pages. Tables must be titled, and measurement units must be indicated. All of the columns of a table must be titled.

The reference format should be as follows:

¡ªfor books, the reference should include the initials and the surnames of all of the authors, the title of the book, the publishing house, city, year, and volume. If reference to a particular page is given, the page number should be indicated after the year (e.g., p. 54);
¡ªfor periodicals, the reference should contain the initials and the surnames of all of the authors, the name of the journal, the volume number, the first page of the article, and the year of publication.

For example,

1. L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz, Quantum Mechanics (Nauka, Moscow, 1989).

For periodicals, only original publications and not the translated versions should be referred to.

References should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the main text.

Proofread copies are not sent out to the authors.

An electronic version of this journal is made available at http://www.ioffe.ru/journals three months prior to publication.
Authors can report information on inaccuracies at sst@journals.ioffe.ru within one month of the appearance of the electronic version
