About the journal

Physica Scripta is an international journal for experimental and theoretical physics published jointly by the Academies for Sciences and the Physical Societies of the five Nordic countries. International contributions dominate and the profile of Physica Scripta contains strong components of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Mathematical Physics.

This site contains the full text of all articles published in Physica Scripta including all Topical Issues. This is available to subscribers in PDF format. Additionally, for articles published since 1998 the abstracts and reference materials are available via a web browser to the general public. If you are a current subscriber and would like to activate your electronic licence please click here to commence the registration process.

Instructions to Authors

1. General.

Concise writing and careful preparation of manuscripts help considerably in handling them for publication leading to a marked reduction in the production costs and publication times.

2. Submission.

Manuscripts should, preferably, be sent as e-mail attachments to submissions@physica.org. Please indicate if you have a preference in the choice of Editor to deal with your manuscript. Authors who cannot submit an electronic version of their manuscript should send it to the Editorial Office at the address below. In this case one original and two copies of the manuscript (typed with double spacing) is required.

3. Title page.

The first page should bear (a) the title of the paper; (b) the initial(s) and the name(s) of the author(s); (c) the name and the complete address of the laboratory where the work has been carried out; (d) footnote with the author's electronic mail address, (e) footnote with permanent address(es) of author(s) where they differ from the laboratory address and (f) classification number(s), according to the Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme Definitions (PACs)*, which the author considers most appropriate for the paper.

4. Abstract.

Each paper should be preceded by an abstract in English.
If a paper is written in French or German, a summary in that language should be inserted after the abstract.

5. Headings.

Principal headings should be numbered consecutively 1, 2, 3, . . . , etc. Subheadings should be numbered 1.1, 1.2, . . . , etc.

6. References.

References (including comments) must be numbered consecutively, in order of first appearance in the text. The reference number should be put within square brackets [2] on the text line. Journal references should contain: (a) the names of all authors with their initials, if the number of authors does not exceed 5. If the number of authors is larger than 5, only the first author followed by "et al." should be stated ; (b) the title of the periodical shortened according to "Physics Abstracts List of Journals"; (c) volume number in bold face; (d) starting page number of the cited paper and (e) year of publication in parenthesis.

Thus:

1. Stenflo, L., Weiland, J. and Wilhelmsson, H., Physica Scripta 1, 46 (1970).

2. Kalvius, G. M. et al., Europhys. Lett. 29, 501 (1995).

Book references should be written as in the examples below.

1. White, R. W. and Geballe, T. H., "Long Range Order in Solids" (Academic Press, New York 1979), p. 317.

2. Frauenfelder, H. and Steffen, R. M., "Angular Correlations in Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy". (Edited by K. Siegbahn) (North-Holland Publ. Co., Amsterdam 1965), vol. II, ch. XIX (A), p. 997.

7. Footnotes.

Footnotes should be avoided.

8. Mathematical material.

Formulae should be numbered consecutively with the number in parentheses to the right of the formula. Variables and parameters should be typed in italic. Vectors should be typed in bold italic. Tensors should be typed in bold roman (upright). Spectroscopic symbols such as 4s4d 3D should be in roman type.

The use of the International System of units (Sl) is recommended.

9. Figures.

Figures should be submitted as separate (i.e. they should not be embedded in the text) files in postscript format along with the native application file and authors are reminded that the use of grayscales may inhibit satisfactory reproduction unless a minimum of such scales are used and subtle tint variations are avoided. Figures can be printed in colour at extra cost. Please contact the editorial office for more information.

Number all illustrations consecutively throughout the paper. Each must be referred to in the main text in consecutive numerical order. Figure captions should be listed separately.

10. Tables.

Tables should be separated from the main text and numbered consecutively with capital Roman numerals in order of appearance in the text. Very extensive tables will appear in Physica Scripta On-line only, with a direct URL reference in the printed issue.
