    Instructions to Authors

    1. Type of Manuscripts. Pharmaceutical Research publishes Research Papers, Rapid Communications, Short Communications, and Review Papers in the physical, chemical, biological, clinical, and socio-/pharmacoeconomic aspects of the pharmaceutical sciences. Review Articles are generally by invitation or by consent of the Editor-in-Chief or Editor-Europe (see #2 below for correspondence information). In general, Research Papers on hypothesis-driven/mechanism-based research that is novel and original in concept and sound in experimental design, methodology, and data interpretation would gain a more favorable editorial decision. Rapid Communications are intended for groundbreaking research that is publishable as is or with minimal revision upon peer review. Short Communications are intended for research of a limited scope or of a descriptive nature.

Maximum length of the text of manuscripts is usually 4000 words (16 double-spaced typewritten pages) for Research Papers and Review Papers and 2000 words for Rapid Communications and Short Communications. The total number of figures and tables should not exceed eight for Research Papers, and four for Rapid Communications and Short Communications. The number of references should not exceed 30 for Research Papers, 15 for Rapid Communications and Short Communications, and 50 for Review Papers. Authors are encouraged to consult with editor named in point 2 below for an exception to these limits.
    2. Manuscript Submission. Manuscripts, original plus three copies, should be submitted to the editor in the same geographical region of the corresponding author, as listed below.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter signed by the corresponding author. The cover letter should explicitly state that the manuscript has not been previously published in any language anywhere and that it is not under simultaneous consideration by another journal. Moreover, Pharmaceutical Research will not publish any manuscripts unless the chemical structures of all compounds are fully disclosed, either by reference to prior work providing such data or by enclosure of such data in the manuscript.

Manuscripts will be reviewed anonymously by at least two independent referees. Authors are encouraged to suggest names of expert reviewers, but selection remains a prerogative of the Editors. Authors may include supplementary material to facilitate the review process. If an accepted paper is cited that has not yet appeared in print and is required for evaluation of the submitted manuscript, authors should provide three copies for use by the referees. Authors are responsible for all statements in their work, including changes made by the copyeditor after a manuscript is accepted.
    3. Copyright. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The form for this transfer can be found at the top of this page.
    4. Ethics in Animal and Clinical Investigations. Investigations using experimental animals must state in the Methods section that the research adhered to the "Principles of Laboratory Animal Care" (NIH publication #85-23, revised in 1985). Investigation with human subjects must state in the Methods section that the research followed the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki promulgated in 1964 and was approved by the institutional human experimentation committee or equivalent, and that informed consent was obtained.
    5. Organization of Manuscript. Type double-spaced on one side only on 8 1/2 x 11 inch (21.59 x 27.94 cm) paper with 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins all around. Order the sections comprising the manuscript as follows: title page, abstract, key words, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, notations (abbreviations), references, appendix, tables, figure-caption list, and figures.
    6. Title Page. The title page should include the title of the article, author's name with full first name (no degrees), author's affiliation, and suggested running head (of less than 50 characters, including spaces). The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author's name. For the corresponding author designated to review proofs, indicate his/her complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.
    7. Abstract. A structured abstract of fewer than 200 words, double-spaced, is required of Research Papers and Rapid Communications, and should be arranged under the following headings, in one paragraph: Purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusions. Review Articles also require an abstract, but it need not be structured. An abstract is not required of Short Communications. An example of a structured abstract is as follows:

Purpose. The purpose of a structured abstract is to assist the authors in organizing their thoughts so as to highlight their work as well as to aid the readers to quickly grasp the essence of the paper.
Methods. The abstract is organized into four distinct sections: Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Results. A more informative abstract results.
Conclusions.Requiring a structured abstract is a sound idea.
    8. Key Words. A list of no more than 5 key words for indexing purposes is to be provided directly below the abstract.
    9. Abbreviations. Use abbreviations sparingly. Provide a notation section, a list of all nonstandard abbreviations, on a separate page before the references section. Use the metric system for all measurements. Express metric abbreviations in lowercase letters without periods (cm, ml, sec). Define all symbols used in equations and formulas. When symbols are used extensively, include a list of all symbols in the notation section.
    10. Acknowledgments. All acknowledgments (including those for financial support) should be typed in one paragraph on a separate page. Authors of manuscripts submitted to Pharmaceutical Research are requested to state the source of all funding, which enabled the research described to be undertaken.
    11. References. References should be typed double-spaced on a separate page and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited in the text. Cite in the text by the appropriate Arabic numeral enclosed in parentheses, e.g., (1), (2-5), etc. References to unpublished personal communications, including papers in preparation or in review, cannot be cited. Abbreviations for journal names should conform to those in the Bibliographic Guide for Editors and Authors (American Chemical Society, Washington, D.C.). The style and punctuation of the references should conform to the following examples:

      Journal Article
      1. J. C. Chang, S. K. Basu, and V. H. L. Lee. Air-interface condition promotes the formation of tight corneal epithelial cell layers for drug transport studies, Pharm Res. 17:670--676 (2000).

      Book
      1. J. Swarbrick and J. C. Boylan. Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Technology, Marcel Dekker, New York, 2001.

      Contribution to a Book
      1. V. H. L. Lee. Ocular epithelial models. In R. T. Borchardt, P. L. Smith, and G. Wilson (eds.), Models for Assessing Drug Absorption and Metabolism, Plenum, New York, 1996, pp. 425--436.
    12. Tables. Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.
    13. Illustrations. Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals in the order in which they are cited in the text. The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Photographs and micrographs should be glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be high-quality laser prints, each on a separate sheet of paper. Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. Include an indication of "top," if not obvious. Figures will not be reduced, and should be prepared to fit into one column (8.5 cm or less in width and no longer than 23.5 cm). Type size of letters, numbers, and symbols should be at least 8 points. Figures 10.5-17.25 cm in width should be submitted only if absolutely necessary. Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half-tones and gray-scale art). Color art should be in the CMYK color space. Special arrangements can be made for color reproduction of figures at the author's expense. Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk. Artwork that does not adhere to these requirements will be returned.
    14. Footnotes. Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
    15. Computer Disks. In addition to a hardcopy of the accepted manuscript, an identical electronic version of it should be submitted simultaneously to the handling editor's office. Label the disk with identifying information: software, journal name, manuscript number, and corresponding author's last name. A Diskette Description Form should be filled out and submitted with your manuscripts.
