Instructions to Authors

Online Submission of Manuscripts
Submission to Patient Education and Counseling proceeds totally online. Via the Elsevier Editorial System website of this journal, Elsevier Editorial System for PEC you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. When submitting a manuscript to Elsevier Editorial System, authors need to provide an electronic version of their manuscript. The author should select a set of classifications from a list, and a category designation for their manuscript (original article, letter to the editor, short communication, etc.) Authors may send queries concerning the submission process, manuscript status, or journal procedures to the Editorial Office (see contact details under Author Agreement). Once the uploading is done, the system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing. All correspondence, including the Editor's decision and request for revisions, will be by e-mail.

Author Agreement

An agreement signed by all authors is required for submission. This can be sent online (after scanning) or by fax/e-mail/letter to the Editorial Office.

Definitions
According to the Delphi Group on Patient Education Terminology, 'Patient Education is a planned learning experience using a combination of methods such as teaching, counseling, and behaviour modification techniques which influence patients' knowledge and health and illness behaviour. Patient Counseling is an individualized process involving guidance and collaborative problem-solving to help the patient to better manage the health problem. Patient Education and Patient Counseling involve an interactive process which assists patients to participate actively in their health care'. It will be assumed that authors are employing these definitions, unless they present their own definition (see Editorial in December 1985 issue).

Clinical health promotion is defined as that which "predisposes, enables, and reinforces patients to take greater control of the non-medical determinants of their own health, primarily through patient education and counseling" (Herbert C, Visser AP, Green L, Clinical health promotion and family physicians; Patient Educ Conns 1995;25:224).

Original articles can also appear in the form of models: Educational Model of Health Care - Case studies of innovative programs which exemplify the educational model of health care, for example, self-care groups, patient advocacy efforts, medication self administration programs and cooperative care units (8-12 pages).
