Instructions to Authors

Pathology International is the official English journal of the Japanese Society of Pathology, publishing articles of excellence in human and experimental pathology. Manuscripts are published in four categories: (i) Original Articles; (ii) Case Reports; (iii) Short Communications (concise case reports not exceeding four printed pages, including figures and tables); and (iv) Letters to the Editor (opinions, interpretation and new information on various aspects of pathology). In addition, occasional invited Reviews and Editorials on current topics may be published.

Copyright

Manuscripts accepted for publication become the copyright of the journal. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all authors indicating that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere nor is currently under consideration for publication by any other journal. On acceptance authors will be sent a copyright transfer form which must be signed and returned before publication.

It is the responsibility of all authors to gain the necessary written permission from the original copyright holder to reproduce illustrations, tables or quotations that have appeared in print on a previous occasion and to submit this with the manuscript.

Style of Manuscripts

All contributions should be written in English; spelling should conform to the Webster's Dictionary. Style should conform to standard manuals such as the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals as presented in JAMA 1993; 269: 2282-2286. Papers should be written so that they are intelligible to the professional reader who is not a specialist in the particular field. The editor and publisher reserve the right to modify typescripts to eliminate ambiguity and repetition and improve communication between author and reader. If extensive alterations are required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for revision.

Research

Experiments involving either human subjects or materials of human origin should be carried out in accordance with the principles embodied in the Declaration of Helsinki of 1975. For animal experiments, authors should follow the guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals. In the case of research involving recombinant DNA, experiments should be carried out according to the guidelines issued by the authorized agency in the country in which the research was performed.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (including figures and tables) and sent by registered mail to:

Dr Kiyoshi Mukai

Fax: +81 3 5684 6936

Authors should keep one set of text, tables and illustrations as the Editor cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to manuscripts. Manuscripts not accepted for publication will not be returned to the authors. Manuscripts should be clearly typed in double spacing on one side only of good quality A4 paper (30 x 21 cm). Margins of 2.5cm should be allowed on all sides. Pages should be numbered consecutively in the top right-hand corner, commencing with the Title Page and including those containing Acknowledgments, References, Tables and Legends to Figures.

An editorial processing contribution of ?000 (Japan) or US$40 must accompany manuscripts submitted for publication.

Manuscripts on Disk

Authors are encouraged to provide the final version of their manuscript on disk as well as in printed form but disks should not be sent until the manuscript has been accepted. It is essential that the printed manuscript and the file on the disk are identical. Authors should supply their accepted manuscript as formatted text on disk (any word-processing format can be handled). It is essential to specify, in a covering note, the hardware and the word processing package used.

When using a word processor, please adhere to the following instructions.

(1) Use one line space between headings and following text. Do not insert line space between paragraphs.
(2) Follow the style of headings in the journal.
(3) Use italics where appropriate, not underlining.
(4) Indent paragraphs with the tab key. Do not indent paragraphs immediately following a heading.
(5) Table columns should be aligned using the tab key.
(6) Technical symbols should be marked on the margin of the printout.

Original Articles

The typescripts should be arranged as follows, with each section beginning on a separate page.

Title Page
The title page must bear the title of the contribution, name(s), and institutional addresses of the authors. The full postal address, telephone and facsimile number of the author who will check the proofs and receive correspondence should be included, as well as the present address of any author if different from that where the work was carried out. The main title should, where possible, contain the major key words used in the body of the paper. A short running title, no longer than 40 characters including spaces, should also be provided.

Abstract
This should be a concise abstract of no more than 200 words of the purpose, basic procedures, main findings and the principal conclusions of the investigation. New and important information should be emphasized.

Key Words
Supply 3-10 key words or key phrases that will assist indexers in cross-indexing the article. For reference use the medical subject headings list from Index Medicus.

Introduction
This should be brief and explain the purpose of the study.

Methods
These should be described in sufficient detail to establish scientific validity and allow others to repeat the study.

Results
Results should be presented in logical sequence in the text, tables and illustrations and should not include material appropriate to the discussion. Figures and tables should be used here to allow easy comprehension of the data.

Discussion
Data given in the results section should not be reiterated. This section should consider the results in relation to any hypothesis(es) advanced before which may include an evaluation of methodology and of the relationship of new information to previously published work in that field.

Acknowledgments should be made only to persons who have made genuine contributions and who endorse the data and conclusions. Sources of financial support should also be acknowledged.

Case Reports

The text for Case Reports may be presented in the following sequence: Abstract, with Key words, Introduction, Clinical Summary, Pathological Findings and Discussion.

Rapid Communications

This category is intended to provide a mechanism for the rapid publication of timely and signficant findings. Manuscripts in this category should be concise but definitive and must not exceed 12 double-spaced typed pages (excluding references) and a maximum of three figures. Papers submitted as Rapid Communications should follow the guidelines for the preparation of regular articles. The Materials and Methods section should be condensed but must be presented in sufficient detail to permit evaluation by reviewers and reproduction of experiements by other scientists. Papers submitted as Rapid Communications must clearly state 'Rapid Communication' at the top left-hand corner. Authors will be notified of a decision regarding their manuscript within 20 days of submission.

References

Provide a list of references, double spaced, after the text. Cite references in text by superscript Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear in the text. Abbreviate titles of journals according to Index Medicus. References to unpublished data and personal communications should appear in the text only.

List all authors for each reference, unless there are seven or more, when only the first three followed by 'et al.' should be given. Authors should check that all references listed have been cited in the text and that no references have been omitted from the list.

Examples of correct reference format:

Standard journal articles:
1. Cohen MB, Beckstead JH, Ferrell LD, Yen B. Enzyme histochemistry of hepatocellular neoplasms. Am. J. Surg. Pathol. 1986; 10: 789-994.

Books and other monographs:
2. Morson BC, Dawson IMP, Day DW, Jass JR, Price AB, Williams GT, eds. Morson & Dawson's Gastrointestinal Pathology, 3rd edn. Blackwell Science, Oxford: Blackwell Publishing, 1992.

Chapter in a book:
3. Weinstein L, Swartz MN. Pathologic properties of invading microorganisms. In: Sodeman WA Jr, Sodeman WA, eds. Pathologic Physiology: Mechanisms of Disease. WB Saunders, Philadelphia: WB Saunders, 1974; 457-472.

Tables

These should be included on a separate page, numbered with Arabic numerals and an accompanying caption at the top. Each table must be referred to in the text and an indication of preferred position in the text should be given. Explanatory matter should be placed in footnotes below the tabular matter and not included in the caption. All non-standard abbreviations should also be explained in the footnotes. Footnotes should be indicated by *, +, +, ? Statistical measures such as SD or SEM should be identified in headings. Vertical rules and horizontal rules between entries should be omitted. Column headings should be brief with units of measurement in parentheses.

Figure Legends

All illustrations require legends, which should be typed on a separate sheet with double spacing. Such legends must provide a descriptive account of the illustration. When symbols, arrows and numbers or letters are used to identify parts of illustrations, each one should be identified and explained in the legend. Indicate the staining method for each photo-micrograph. Use of scale markers in the image is suggested for electron micrographs.

Figures

Line drawings and graphs should be professionally drawn to fit the column widths of the Journal (8.5 cm, 11.5 cm or, if needed, 17.5 cm). Figures should be clearly labeled and supplied as bromides or laser printed on smooth, clean, white paper.

Photographs must be supplied as sharp, glossy, black and white prints. If the authors wish to have a group of photographs printed together in a single block (composite figure), one set of photographs may be mounted to show the preferred layout. Photographs must be sized to fit the column widths of the journal (see above). The maximum plate area for composite figures is 17.5 x 22.0 cm, including the legend printed at its foot. Inappropriately sized material will be cropped or reduced by the editorial office or the publisher. Scale bars must be included on all electron micrographs, with the scale specified in the figure legend.

Figures should be numbered in Arabic and each figure should be identified clearly on the back on a self-adhesive label with its number, name of author(s) and orientation. Do not use ball point pen or paper clips. Titles and detailed explanations should be confined to legends and not included in illustrations. Supply legends for all figures on a separate sheet of paper, not with the illustration.

Colour Figures

The whole cost of reproducing colour figures will be charged to authors. When colour illustrations are preferred, submit original colour transparencies as well as three sets of colour prints. The colour prints should be trimmed to eliminate unnecessary marginal detail.

Units and Abbreviations

As far as possible units should conform to SI conventions. Standard abbreviations may be used and should be defined in the Abstract and on first mention in the text. In general a term should not be abbreviated unless it is used repeatedly and the abbreviation is helpful to the reader. A list of common abbreviations is printed at the back of each issue.

Publication Fees

Page Charges
For articles of eight pages or less there are no page charges. Articles in excess of eight pages are subject to a charge per printed page. Color printing and redrafting of tables require an additional charge.

English Language Charges
Authors are responsible for the linguistic accuracy of their manuscripts. Authors not fully conversant with the English language are advised to seek skilled advice from subject specialists with a sound knowledge of English. After acceptance, all manuscripts will be forwarded to the Language Consultant for review. This in no way diminishes the responsibility of the author to pay meticulous attention to the linguistic accuracy of the manuscript. The cost of English revision by the Language Consultant will be charged to the author according to the extent of the revision.

Proofs and offprints
Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author and should be returned to Blackwell Publishing within 3 days of receipt. Major alterations to the text and illustrations are unacceptable at proof stage; authors will be charged for changes from their original manuscript.

Offprints may be ordered using the offprint order form sent to the corresponding author with the proofs. The costs of offprints are given on the order form and orders are accepted in multiples of 100 only. The order payment should be returned with the corrected proofs within 3 days of receipt.

Blackwell Publishing provides a free dial service from Japan (Tel: 00 31 61 6238). The Japanese Business Coordinator, a Japanese speaker, is able to answer author's questions regarding printing of colour figures, proofs and offprints. A message can be left on the answering machine if the office is unattended.
