About the journal

|
Pancreatology is the official journal of the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP) and the European Pancreatic Club (EPC). Dedicated to the understanding and treatment of pancreatic disease, this multidisciplinary periodical is concerned with the endocrine and exocrine pancreas in health and disease, including endocrine-exocrine interactions. |
 | New treatment modalities are presented alongside more basic information relating to the etiology and progression of pancreatic disease and abnormal pancreatic function: Findings from the fields of gastroenterology, oncology, surgery, pharmacology, cell and molecular biology as well as endocrinology, immunology and epidemiology are brought together to present an integral picture. Featuring, among other things, original articles, reviews and case reports, ¡®Pancreatology¡¯ emphasizes not only clinical aspects, but also offers valuable information for the researcher.
Instructions to Authors
Submission
Only original papers written in English are considered and should be sent to:
 M.V. Singer, MD c/o S. Karger AG Editorial Office ¡®Pancreatology¡¯ P.O. Box CH¨C4009 Basel Tel. +41 61 306 1437 Fax +41 61 306 1434 E-Mail d.gysin@karger.ch
Mailing address for courier deliveries only: Allschwilerstr. 10 CH¨C4055 Basel (Switzerland)
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original; final high-resolution pictures need only be sent after acceptance of the paper) together with a soft copy on disc. The manuscript should match the electronic file exactly. For details please refer to Electronic Submission. Editorial work and copy-editing will be executed from the electronic version of your manuscript.
Conditions
All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.
Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of ¡®Pancreatology¡¯ and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.
It is the author¡¯s responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Rapid Communications
Manuscripts intended for rapid communication must present new findings of sufficient importance to justify their accelerated acceptance. Readers are invited to send their contributions to the address given under Submission. Manuscripts should follow the normal arrangement of research papers, including an abstract not exceeding 150 words. Rapid communications should not be more than four printed pages in length (including figures, tables and references). Rapid communications can only be accepted as they are or with minor modifications. Rejected manuscripts can only be reconsidered as regular papers. Review will be rapid, and once accepted, the paper will be included in the next planned issue.

Clinical Images
Clinical Images is a feature of ¡®Pancreatology¡¯ that wants to give the GI surgeon the possibility to share an exceptional clinical condition encountered during his or her daily work with fellow surgeons. Readers are invited to send their contributions to the address given under Submission. Images must be original, unpublished, high-quality black-and-white photographs. Each print should be labeled with the last names of the contributors and an arrow indicating the top of the image. The legend/short text should explain the uniqueness of the depicted and provide relevant clinical information including a short description of the patient¡¯s history, relevant physical and laboratory findings, clinical course, response to treatment (if any) and condition, or both. This text should not exceed 200 words. Contributors must provide the names, academic degrees, addresses, phone and fax numbers of the photographer, contributor, or both.

Special Requirements
 1. Investigations Involving Human Subjects: ¡®Pancreatology¡¯ requires that investigations performed on human subjects have the prior approval of the institutional committee on human experimentation. Authors are required to submit a signed statement as to the date and details of the appropriate review. In countries where such mechanisms for approval do not exist, authors are required to submit a signed statement that the research was carried out in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. A similar assurance is required to document that animal experimentation was performed under appropriate circumstances.
 2. Statement for Authors Submitting Original Research or Case Reports: ¡®The enclosed manuscript ... (Title) ... has been approved by me as well as by the responsible authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out. I certify that none of the material in this manuscript has been published previously in any form and that none of this material is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. This includes symposia and proceedings of meetings and preliminary publications of any kind except an abstract of 400 words or less.¡¯ (To be signed by all authors.)
 3. The undersigned also confirm that they qualify for (co-)authorship according to the ¡®Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts¡¯ published in the guidelines of the ¡®International Committee of Medical Journal Editors¡¯ in 1988 as follows: Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; (b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and on (c) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions (a), (b), and (c) must all be met. Participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. General supervision of the research group is also not sufficient for authorship. Any part of an article critical to its main conclusions must be the responsibility of at least one author. Persons who have contributed intellectually to the article but whose contributions do not justify authorship may be named and their particular contribution described in the ¡®Acknowledgements¡¯. Such persons must give their permission to be named.

Arrangements
Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors¡¯ names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. NB: Authors wishing to preserve the phonetic meaning of diacritics (PubMed reduces diacritics to their root characters) must spell their names accordingly when submitting manuscripts (e.g. M¨¹ller should be Mueller).
Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.
Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3¨C10 key words in English is essential.
Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 200 words. It should be structured as follows:
Background/Aims: What is the major problem that prompted the study? Methods: How was the study performed? Results: Most important findings? Conclusion: Most important conclusion?

 Footnotes: Avoid footnotes.
Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate pages. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate page. For the reproduction of illustrations, good drawings and original photographs are preferred; slides may also be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations in one block for reproduction (max. size 181 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author¡¯s name, and ¡®top¡¯ with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800¨C1,200 dpi.
Color illustrations: Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.¨C / USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author¡¯s expense.
References: In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as ¡®unpublished data¡¯ and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Preferably, please cite all authors. Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals.
