Instructions to Authors
The journal will consider for publication original manuscripts (i.e. those that have not been published elsewhere except in abstract form) and reviews on the exocrine and endocrine pancreas. The journal will focus on the entire spectrum of the basic sciences, etiology, prevention, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and surgical and medical management of pancreatic diseases, including cancer, inflammatory diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cystic fibrosis and other congenital disorders. Comments on controversial issues and reviews of articles of exceptional merit will also be accepted.
Types of Papers to Be Published.
- Full papers report results of original research in all aspects of the pancreas.
- Short communications summarize in concise form work that leads to positive conclusions.
- Case reports cover topics of interest in relation to a wider field of research.
- Review articles communicate detailed, critical surveys of concept or experience, particularly in fields that have shown rapid development during the past five years.
- Case reports are also published as Letters-to-the-editor and must be limited to 1 figure, 1 table, and no more than 10 references, for a total of 2 typeset pages. All letters-to-the-editor receive priority handling in both the review and publishing processes.
Address for Contributors.Send manuscripts to: Pancreas, care of Vay Liang W. Go, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, 900 Veteran Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90095. Telephone: 310-208-2530; fax: 310-824-5990.
Form of Manuscripts. An original and two copies of each manuscript must be submitted, in English, in double-spaced, typewritten form with a margin of at least 2.5 cm (1 inch) on all sides. The text of the manuscript should be in the following sequence: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, Tables, and Figure legends. Pages should be numbered in succession, the title page being page one.
The title page of each manuscript should include only the article title, author's names and affiliations, name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address of the person to whom proofs and reprint requests should be addressed, any necessary footnotes to these items, and a running title not exceeding 45 letters and spaces. Indicate specific affiliations of each author. Information concerning sources of financial support should be placed in the Acknowledgment section between Discussion and References.
The page following the title page should include a brief abstract of up to 200 words describing the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of the study, and up to six key words or terms.
Tables and Illustrations. Tables should be typed neatly, each on a separate sheet, with title above and any notes below. Explain all abbreviations. Line drawings should be submitted as three sets of clear glossy prints, with lettering of high standard and large enough to be legible when reduced. Halftone photographs should be submitted in triplicate in the form of original photographic prints. An overlay should be provided showing which area of the photograph requires greatest definition, and scale bars should be provided on the photograph. The preferred size for prints is 12.5 x 17.5 cm (5 x 7 inches); the maximum size acceptable is 20 x 25 cm (8 x 10 inches).
On the back of each figure affix a label giving the figure number and authors' names, and indicate the top of the figure with an arrow. Each figure must be accompanied by an explanatory legend, typewritten with double spacing (do not use a separate sheet for each legend). Explain all symbols used in the figure. Color illustrations will be charged to the author; the cost will be given upon request.
Digital figures. Electronic art should be created/scanned and saved and submitted as either a TIFF (tagged image file format), an EPS (encapsulated postscript) file, or a PPT (Power Point) file. Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dpi (dots per inch), and electronic photographs?radiographs, CT scans, and so on?and scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. If fonts are used in the artwork, they must be converted to paths or outlines or they must be embedded in the files. Color images must be created/scanned and saved and submitted as CMYK files. All electronic art must be accompanied by high-resolution laser prints of the images. Files can be submitted on a 3?inch high-density disk, a CD-ROM, or an Iomega Zip disk. Please note that artwork generated from office suite programs such Corel Draw and MS Word and artwork downloaded from the Internet (JPEG or GIFF files) cannot be used.
Abbreviations. Follow the list of abbreviations given in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (see section on References). For additional abbreviations, consult the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual (available from the American Institute of Biological Sciences, 1800 N. Kent Street, Suite 930, Arlington, Virginia 22209, U.S.A.) or other standard sources.
References. The journal complies with the reference style given in the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (see Ann Intern Med 1982;96:766---71, or Br Med J 1982;284:1766---70). References are to be cited in the text by number and numbered in the order in which they are cited. The reference section should be typed double-spaced at the end of the text, following the sample formats given below. For abbreviations of journal names, refer to List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus (available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402, U.S.A., DHEW Publication No. (NIH) 80-267; ISSN 0093-3821). Copyright. Copyright on all published articles will be held by the publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. In view of the present U.S. copyright law, effective January 1, 1978, it is necessary that each co-author of a submitted manuscript sign a statement expressly transferring copyright in the event the paper is published in the journal. A copyright transfer form will be sent to the corresponding author by the office of the Editor-in-Chief when receipt of a manuscript is acknowledged.
Instructions for Electronic Manuscript Submission
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins will accept submission of electronic versions of manuscripts in conjunction with the traditional paper version. The preferred storage medium is a 3?inch disk in an MS-DOS compatible format. Files in a MacIntosh-compatible format will also be accepted.
Files should be submitted in one of the following standard word processing formats: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, WordStar, or XYWrite. While we can convert from other word processing formats, the vagaries of the conversion process may introduce errors. Do not submit ASCII text files.
Each submitted disk must be clearly labeled with the name of the author, item title, journal title, type of equipment used to generate the disk, word processing program (including version number), and filenames used.
The file submitted on disk must be the final corrected version of the manuscript and must agree with the final accepted version of the submitted paper manuscript. The disk submitted should contain only the final version of the manuscript. Delete all other material from the disk.
Please follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style as given in "Instructions to Authors."
Note, however, that while the paper version of the manuscript must be presented in the traditional double spaced format, the electronic version will be typeset and should not contain any extraneous formatting instructions. For example:
Use hard carriage returns only at the end of paragraphs and display lines (e.g., titles, subheadings)
- Do not use an extra hard return between paragraphs
- Do not use tabs or extra space at the start of a paragraph or for list entries
- Do not indent runover lines in references
- Turn off line spacing
- Turn off hyphenation and justification
- Do not specify page breaks, page numbers, or headers
- Do not specify typeface
- Care should be taken to correctly enter "one" (1) and lower case "el" (l), as well as "zero" (0) and capital "oh" (O).
Please observe the following conventions concerning dashes: Use a single hyphen with space before it for a minus sign, use a double hyphen (with space before and after) to indicate a "long dash" in text, and a triple hyphen (with no extra space) to indicate a range of numbers (e.g. "23---45").
Illustrations and tables will be handled conventionally. However, figure and table legends should be included at the end of the electronic file.
Non-standard characters (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should be coded consistently throughout the text. Please make a list of such characters and provide a listing of the codes used.
