About the journal

First published in 1962 under the title Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers Journal, the journal assumed its current name in 1972 and was published bimonthly until 1986, when monthly publication began. In addition to contributed papers on various topics in optics, some issues contain special collections of papers in key areas of technology.

The flagship monthly journal of SPIE, Optical Engineering publishes peer-reviewed papers reporting on research and development in all areas of optics, photonics, and imaging science and engineering.

Instructions to Authors

Optical Engineering publishes papers reporting on research and development in optical science and engineering and the practical applications of known optical science, engineering, and technology. Contributions should be substantial and significant in content. Papers should describe the original work of the authors that has not been previously published in a refereed journal and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submissions based on reports that have been published in an SPIE Proceedings should be extensively revised according to the guidelines.

Manuscripts should be submitted in English, and the presentation should be as succinct as comprehension will permit. Manuscripts that are commercial in nature will not be considered. Manuscripts are reviewed and refereed. Those accepted for publication are edited for conformance to the journal's style. Metric units should be used unless to do so is not feasible or would result in a serious loss of clarity.

Submissions:

Optical Engineering uses an online manuscript submission and review system. To submit your manuscript, go to the Online Submission System and follow the instructions. The following formats are accepted:

For text:
Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, LaTeX/REVTeX, PDF, or PostScript

For figures:
TIFF, PostScript, EPS, or PDF

Manuscripts must contain the following:

  • Title page listing the paper title; the name(s) of the author(s); and the affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, fax number, and Email address (if available) of each author. List sponsorship information in an acknowledgment section at the end of the paper.
  • Abstract (200 words maximum) should be a summary of the paper and not an introduction. Because the abstract may be used in abstracting journals, it should be self-contained (i.e., no numerical references) and substantive in nature, presenting concisely the objectives, methodology used, results obtained, and their significance.
  • Subject terms or keywords are required, maximum of eight.
  • Text should be typed double-spaced, in a single column using 12-point type.
  • Equations should be typed. Define characters that might be confused (such as ell/one, nu/vee, or omega/w) at first usage.
  • References to published literature must be typed double-spaced and numbered consecutively in the order of their citation in the text. Private communications or unpublished reports should be treated as references.

Use the following formats for books or journal articles:

Books: Author(s) (list first and middle initials, then last name), book title in italic, publisher, city, and year published. (When citing a paper chapter in a book, list the chapter title in quotes, and the book title in italic, plus the page numbers.) Example: J. A. Hall, "Imaging tubes," Chap. 13 in The Infrared Handbook, W. W. Wolfe, G. J. Zissis, Eds., pp. 132-176, ERIM, Ann Arbor, MI (1978).

Journals: Author(s) (list first and middle initials, then last name), paper title in quotes, journal name in italic (abbreviate only well-known journals), volume and issue numbers, inclusive page numbers, and year published. Example: N. Bluzer and A. S. Jensen, "Current readout of infrared detectors," Opt. Eng. 26(3), 241-248 (1987).

  • Footnotes: Use textual footnotes only when necessary to present important documentary or explanatory material whose inclusion in the text would be distracting.
  • Illustrations not included in the electronic file will be scanned using a digital scanner. Only high-quality artwork is acceptable. Do not send negatives, transparencies, or slides. Lettering and symbols should not be handwritten. Maximum black-white contrast in original figures is important; avoid using gray-scale in line art if possible. Illustrations are generally reduced to column width (3-5/16 in.) or smaller. Make sure all lettering and lines are clear and dark. Number all illustrations in the order that they appear in text. All figure parts must be labeled (a), (b), etc. Authors are strongly encouraged to send electronic files for optimal quality.
  • Figure and table captions are typeset with the manuscript and should be typed double-spaced after the references.
  • Biographies and photographs of authors are printed with each accepted paper. Send a brief professional biography not to exceed 150 words and a glossy photo of each author once the manuscript has been accepted for publication.

OE Letters. The purpose of this section is to provide rapid publication of short technical communications of significant interest to optical scientists and engineers. See Submission Guidelines.

Publication charges of $90 per published page apply to both contributed and special section papers. Editorial acceptance of papers is not tied to payment of publication charges, but such payments are expected. These charges are financial contributions from authors' institutions to help defray the cost of publishing research results and should be regarded as an essential and proper part of their research budgets.

Color printing. Authors or their sponsors must bear the cost of printing in color. Contact the Managing Editor for information about color figure preparation and for a cost estimate.

Color online only. All figures submitted electronically in color will be published in color online without charge, provided the figures are submitted in the proper format. Authors who wish to have color figures published in the print journal will continue to incur color printing charges. Figures must be submitted electronically in TIFF, PostScript, or EPS. (We cannot accept JPEG, GIF, or any other file formats for production of figures.) Authors should submit a single color version of the figure. The black-and-white figure for print will be derived from the color file submitted by the author. Authors who choose to submit color figures are responsible for ensuring that the captions and descriptions in the text are suitable for both the color online and black-and-white print versions of the journal, and that the figure itself will be readable in both versions. Figures must be prepared according to the AIP guidelines. The journal reserves the right to publish figures in black and white online if the electronic figures are unusable or are received too late in the production process. If the electronic files are utilized, authors will see the color figures in the PDF proof of their article.

Optical Engineering is published monthly in the first week of the month of issue and is mailed to subscribers the week thereafter.
