     Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This journal is directed at researchers in Numerical Analysis, Computer Sciences and Natural Sciences, engineers and economists who either take part in the development of methods in Numerical Linear Algebra or use such methods in their research.

Topics covered include (but are not limited to):
Conjugate Gradients Like and other iterative methods; Preconditioning Methods; Direct Solution Methods; Numerical Methods for Eigenproblems; Newton-like Methods for Nonlinear Equations; Parallel and Vectorizable Algorithms in Numerical Linear Algebra; Application of Methods of Numerical Linear Algebra in Science, Engineering and Economics.

The journal emphasizes mathematical rigour in presenting new methods in Numerical Linear Algebra including their analysis and applications. Where it turns out to be difficult to give full mathematical rigour to the presentation, well-chosen numerical test problems can suffice to demonstrate the usefulness of the presented method, if these are accompanied by a discussion and heuristic explanations.

The journal also emphasizes analysis of the computational and communication complexity of algorithms in Numerical Linear Algebra when implemented in different computer architectures.

The journal solicits original research papers and survey articles. All papers should contain a discussion indicating in which application(s) the approach, suggested in the paper, can be used. The authors should strive at ensuring that the presented methods are easily understandable by as broad a spectrum of readers as possible.

Instructions to Authors

Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit four copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to the General Editor, Professor Owe Axelsson, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, University of Nijmegen, Toernooiveld 1, 6525 ED Nijmegen, The Netherlands; or to the Co-Editor Dr Panayot Vassilevski, Center for Applied Scientific Computing, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, 7000 East Avenue, Mail Stop L-560, Livermore, CA 94550, U.S.A. Alternatively, manuscripts can be submitted electronically to Dr. Maya Neytcheva, Associate Editor, e-mail address: Maya@tdb.uu.se. A signed submission letter and Copyright Transfer Agreement should then be sent separately to the General Editor.

Authors must also supply:

  • an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
  • a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
  • permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.

Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. Submissions are preferred in LaTeX, style files for which are available from this website. Authors are urged to use these style files and the accompanying documentation for the preparation of their manuscripts. However, we are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect and TeX or one of its derivatives.

Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.

Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text (please note that this a requirement for final, accepted manuscripts only and for preliminary submissions the figures and tables may be incorporated into the text as appropriate).

  • The title page must list the full title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
  • Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles except book reviews. This should be a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to six key words that describe your paper for indexing purposes.

Reference style. References should be cited in the text by number within square brackets and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

  1. Harbrecht H, Paiva F, Pérez C, Schneider R. Multiscale preconditioning for the coupling of FEM-BEM. Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications 2003; 10[(3)]:197-222. DOI: 10.1002/nla.284
  2. Wesseling P. An Introduction to Multigrid Methods. Wiley: New York, 1992; 1-10.
Authors should note that full journal titles should be given in references. A list of the most commonly cited titles can be found at http://www-math.sci.kun.nl/math/medewerkers/neytchev/NLA_full_J_tit.html.

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing.

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.

Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.

Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
