Instructions to Authors
Neuropathology is an international journal sponsored by the Japanese Society of Neuropathology and publishes original papers dealing with all aspects of human and experimental neuropathology, and related fields of research. The journal aims to encourage the international exchange of results and encourages authors from all countries to submit papers in the following five categories: Original Articles, Case Reports, Short Communications, Occasional Reviews and Editorials, and Letters to the Editor.
All material for publication should be submitted to:
Dr Hitoshi Takahashi Editor-in-Chief, Neuropathology Department of Pathology Brain Research Institute Niigata University 1-757 Asahimachi Niigata 951-8585 Japan Tel: +81 25 227 0633 Fax: +81 25 227 0817 Email: hitoshi@bri.niigata-U.ac.jp
Manuscripts are accepted whether or not the author is a member of the Japanese Society of Neuropathology and on the understanding that the content has not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere. All material submitted for publication, including solicited articles, are subject to editorial review and revision. Each manuscript will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Authors may suggest the names of three potential referees (include addresses, telephone and facsimile numbers); the Editor-in-Chief will try to honour these requests.
Manuscripts accepted for publication become the copyright of the Journal and all authors will be asked to sign a transfer of copyright form. Articles accepted for publication may not be reproduced elsewhere, in English or any other language, without the permission of the Editor-in-Chief.
Style of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be written in lucid English. Spelling should be either British or American (current usage), but must be consistent throughout the manuscript. The style of manuscripts should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals as presented in JAMA 1993; 269: 2282-2286. Manuscripts should be written so that they are intelligible to the professional reader who is not a specialist in the particular field. The Editor and Publisher reserve the right to modify manuscripts to eliminate ambiguity and repetition, and to improve communication between author and reader.
Ethical considerations
Experiments involving either human subjects or material of human origin should be carried out in accordance with the principles embodied in the Declaration of Helsinki of 1975. For animal experiments, authors should follow the guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals. In the case of research involving recombinant DNA, experiments should be carried out according to the guidelines issued by the authorized agency in the country in which the research was carried out.
Submission of manuscripts
One original and two copies of the complete manuscript, including figures, should be submitted. Authors should keep a complete copy of the manuscript and figures as accepted manuscripts are not usually returned to the author.
The entire manuscript, including references, should be typed double spaced on one side only of A4 paper (21 x 30 cm), with margins of at least 3 cm on all sides. All pages should be numbered consecutively in the top right-hand corner, from title page to figure legends. The manuscript should be presented in the following order: title page, abstract and key words, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, tables, figure legends and figures. For Case Reports, the main text should be presented a follows: introduction, clinical summary, pathological findings and discussion. In all cases each section should start on a new page.
Title page This should contain: (i) the complete title of the paper; (ii) the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s); (iii) a short running title (less than 40 characters including spaces); and (iv) the full postal address, telephone and facsimile numbers and email address of the author, who will receive correspondence and check the proofs.
Abstract All manuscripts must include a brief but informative abstract, not exceeding 300 words, intelligible without reference to the main text. It should include the purpose of the study, the basic methods used, the main findings and the main part of the conclusion. References to the literature should not be included.
Key words Key words (up to 7) should be provided below the abstract to assist with indexing of the article. For reference use the medical subject headings list from Index Medicus.
Introduction This section should include sufficient background information to set the work in context. The aims of the manuscript should be clearly stated.
Methods This should be concise but provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be repeated by others. The source of material should be given in detail, where possible. Ethical considerations should be detailed.
Results Results should be presented in a logical sequence in the text, tables and figures; repetitive presentation of the same data in different forms should be avoided.
Discussion This should consider the results in relation to any hypotheses advanced in the introduction and place the study in the context of other work.
Acknowledgements Financial and technical assistance may be acknowledged here. Anonymous reviewers should not be acknowledged. It is the authors' responsibility to obtain written permission to quote material that has appeared in another publication.
References In the text, references should be cited using superscript Arabic numerals, in the order in which they appear in the text. In the reference list abbreviate titles of journals according to Index Medicus. Reference to 'papers submitted', 'unpublished data', 'personal communications', abstracts and other secondary material should appear in the text only.
List all authors for each reference, unless there are seven or more, in which case only the first three followed by et al. should be given. Authors should check that all references listed have been cited in the text and that no references have been omitted from the list.
References should be listed in numerical order at the end of the article, in the following form:
Journal articles 1. Mollenhauer J, Wiemann S. Scheurlen Wet al DMBT1, a new member of the srcr superfamily, on chromosome 10q25.3-26.1 is deleted in malignant brain tumours. Nat Genet 1997:17:32-39.
Non-English journal articles 2. Nokura K. Yamamoto H. Uchida M, Hashizume Y, Inagaki T. Automatic movements of extremeities induced in primary massive brain lesion with apeneic coma (in Japanese with English abstract). Rinsho Shinkeigaku 1997; 37: 198-207.
Chapters in books 3. Esiri MM, Hyman BT, Beyreuther K, Masters CL. Ageing and dementia. In: Graham DI, Lantos PL (eds).Greenfield's Neuropathology,Vol 2, 6th edn. London: Arnold, 1997; 153-233.
Books 4. Ghadially FN. Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix,Vol 2, 3rd edn. London: Butterworths, 1988.
Tables Tables must be on separate sheets. They should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals with a descriptive title above the table. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in parentheses. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns. The approximate position of tables should be indicated in the margin of the manuscript.
Figure legends Legends should be self-explanatory and typed on a separate sheet. The legend should incorporate definitions of any symbols used and explanations of scale bars or magnifications. The approximate positions of figures should be indicated in the margin of the manuscript.
Figures Authors are requested to provide three sets of figures. All illustrations (line drawings and photographs) are classified as figures and should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each figure should be labelled on the back indicating its number, name of author(s) and orientation of the figure. One set of figures should be labelled 'original', and these will be used for publication. Illustrations are expensive to reproduce and authors should provide compact figures that contain a high density of information per unit area.
Line drawings and graphs should be professionally drawn and lettered, using black ink on white paper. Line figures are reduced to single column width (85 mm) whenever possible. Allowance should be made for lines and text becoming smaller and thinner on reduction to this size. Authors may request that unavoidably large figures be published at double column width (178 mm), by writing 'double column' on the back of the illustration. As far as possible authors' requests will be met but the Editors reserve the right to make discretionary reductions in size.
Photographs should be provided as unmounted sharp, glossy, black and white prints. Duplicate copies of the photographs should be of the same quality as the original; machine copies of the original photographs are not acceptable. If authors wish to have a group of photographs printed as a single block (composite figure) one set of photographs may be mounted to the preferred layout.
Individual photographs forming a composite figure should be of equal contrast to facilitate printing, and should be accurately squared and mounted with edges touching. Magnifications should be indicated using a scale bar on the illustration. Letters, symbols and arrows on the surface of the photograph should be professionally applied, either to the photograph or on a cover sheet, and be of sufficient size to allow easy identification.
The maximum size for photographs or groups of photographs is usually 85 mm wide (one column width). Photographs slightly over this size will be reduced to fit. Authors may request that unavoidably large figures be published at double column width (178 mm) by writing 'double column' on the back of the illustration. The maximum depth for large figures is 210 mm.
Colour photographs should be submitted as colour prints for initial reviewing. Any symbols, arrows and scale bars should be provided on a transparent overlay with the colour prints. The Editors will request original colour transparencies for final publication of the figures. The full cost of reproducing colour photographs will be charged to the authors.
Cover photographs Suggestions for cover photographs are welcome. Usually one or two photographs are included on the cover (maxim size 98 x 65 mm). Photographs must appear in a submitted manuscript.
Manuscripts on disk
Authors are required to provide their manuscript on disk.
Authors should use a new disk rather than a reformatted disk and the disk should contain the relevant file(s) only. Authors should supply their accepted paper as formatted text (most word-processing formats can be handled). It is essential that the hardware and the word processing package are specified on the disk (e.g. IBM, Word 7), as well as the first author's surname, the Journal title and the manuscript number.
The entire article - (i) title page, (ii) text, (iii) acknolwedgements, (iv) references, (v) figure legends, (vi) tables and legends, (vii) appendices - should be saved in a single file; only electronic figures should be supplied as separate files. The following instructions should be adhered to.
It is essential that the final, revised version of the manuscript and the file saved on disk are identical (ie.e authors should supply a new disk if the article is revised).
Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph.
Do not use l (elle) for 1 (one), O (upper case oh) for 0 (zero) or ?(German esszett) for ?/SPAN> (beta).
Include all figure legends and tables with their legends, if possible.
Use a tab, not spaces, to separate data points in tables.
If you use a table editor function, ensure that each data point is contained within a unique cell; do not use carriage returns within cells.
Complete and return the File Description Form (supplied by the Editorial Office) specifiying any special characters used to represent non-keyboard characters.
Authors might want to visit the Blackwell Science website for authors at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp which details further information on the preparation and submission of articles and figures and gives access to the Blackwell House Style guide.
Abbreviations and unitsSI units (metre, kilogram etc.) should be used wherever possible. Statistics and measurements should always be given in figures, for example 10 mm, except where the number begins the sentence. When the number does not refer to a unit of measurement, it is spelt out, except where the number is greater than nine. The word 'Figure' should be shortened to Fig. unless starting a sentence.
Page Charges For articles of five printed pages or less there are no page charges. Articles in excess of five pages are subject to a charge per extra printed page and per extra figure. Colour figures and redrafting of tables require an additional charge.
English language charges Authors are responsible for the linguistic accuracy of their manuscripts. Authors not fully conversant with the English lanugage are advised to seek skilled advice from subject specialists with a sound knoweldge of English. The Editors reserve the right to forward accepted manuscripts to an English language consultant for language improvement. The cost of English revision will be charged to the author according to the extent of the revision.
Proofs and offprints Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author and should be returned to Blackwell Science within 3 days of receipt. Major alterations are unacceptable at proof stage; authors will be charged for changes from their original manuscript.
Offprints may be ordered using the offprint order form sent to the corresponding author with the proofs. The costs of offprints are given on the order form and orders are acceptable in multiples of 50 only. The order and payment should be returned with the corrected proofs within 3 days of receipt.
Blackwell Science provides a free dial service from Japan (Tel: 005 31 61 6238). The Japanese Business Coordinator, a Japanese speaker, is able to answer authors' questions regarding printing of colour figures, proofs and offprints. A message can be left on the answering machine if the office is unattended.
