About the journal

Neurochemical Research

Neurochemical Research is devoted to the rapid publication of studies that use neurochemical methodology in research on nervous system structure and function. The journal publishes original reports of experimental and clinical research results, perceptive reviews of significant problem areas in the neurosciences, brief comments of a methodological or interpretive nature, and research summaries conducted by leading scientists whose works are not readily available in English.

Indexing/Abstracting Services

Neurochemical Research is indexed/abstracted in Biochemistry and Biophysics Citation Index; Biological Abstracts; Chemical Abstracts; CSA Neurosciences Abstracts; Current Contents/Life Science; Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences; EMBASE/Excerpta Medica; Index Medicus/MEDLINE; The ISI Alerting Services; Neuroscience Abstracts; Neuroscience Citation Index; Referativnyi Zhurnal; Reference Update; Science Citation Index; Science Citation Index Expanded

Instructions to Authors

  1. Manuscripts should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief via e-mail in PC format at lajtha@nki.rfmh.org. If it is not possible to send electronic files, manuscripts should be sent in triplicate and in English to:

    Dr. Abel Lajtha
    The N.S. Kline Institute
    140 Old Orangeburg Rd.
    Orangeburg, New York 10962
If figures cannot be incorporated into the text of the article, they can be sent as separate files in TIFF or GIF format. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor's Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information ¡ª software, journal name, and first author's last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor's Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
  2. Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor-in-Chief will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
  3. Neurochemical Research publishes papers that conform to any of the following categories: (a) Original Articles reflect results of original research, and may be of any length but should not usually exceed 8000 words; (b) Overviews (should be submitted to Dr. George DeVries, Building 1, Room D-4001, Fifth Avenue & Roosevelt Road, Hines V.A. Hospital, Hines, Illinois 60141) present state-of-the-art updates of a particular facet of neurochemistry; (c) Comments include the description of a method, the use of a method, or the discussion of a matter of interpretation and should not exceed 1500 words. Papers should be as brief as is consistent with clear presentation. Preliminary communications are not accepted.
  4. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on 8½ ¡Á 11 inch opaque paper with margins of at least 1½ inches all around. The original and two copies (including copies of all illustrations and tables) should be submitted.
  5. A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author's name (no degrees), author's affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation) and should be typed as a (numbered) footnote to the author's name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address, if available, of the one author designated to review proofs. Proofs will be sent to corresponding authors via e- mail in PDF format. If an e-mail address is not available, paper proofs will be mailed to the address of the corresponding author. The manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: title page; body of article; references. Tables, figure captions page, and figures should be on separate pages at the back of the manuscript.
  6. An abstract of not more than 150 words should be provided on a separate (the second) page.
  7. A list of 4¨C6 key words should be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.
  8. Papers reflecting original results should be organized into the following sections: Introduction, Experimental Procedure, Results, Discussion, and References. The use of subheadings in the Experimental Procedure, Results, and Discussion sections is recommended. All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be consolidated in a separate section directly preceding the References.
  9. Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) should be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals and referred to by number in the text. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be prepared with india ink. Either original drawings or high-quality photographic prints are acceptable. Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. Include an indication of "top," if not obvious. Each figure should have an accompanying brief but adequate caption, and all figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half-tone and gray-scale art). Color art should be in the CYMK color space. Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk. The publisher charges per page for color printing.
  10. Tables should be numbered in one consecutive series of Roman numerals and referred to by number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper and should have a brief descriptive title. Center this title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lower-case letters) below the table.
  11. References should be typed double-spaced in a separate section at the end of the paper and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Cite in the text by the appropriate Arabic numeral enclosed in parentheses on the base line. The style and punctuation of the references should conform to the following examples:

    1. Glowinski, J., Kopin, I. J., and Axelrod, J. 1965. Metabolism of (3H)norepinephrine in the rat brain. J. Neurochem. 12:25-30.
    2. Schildkraut, J. J. 1973. Pharmacology ¡ª The effects of lithium on biogenic amines. Pages 51-74, in Gershon, S., and Shopsin, D. (eds.), Lithium: Its Role in Psychiatry Research and Treatment, Plenum Press, New York.

For further examples, consult a current issue of the journal. Abbreviations for journal names should conform to those in the American National Standard for the Abbreviation of Titles of Periodicals. Reference style follows the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual (3rd edition, 1972) number system (pages 153-165). Abbreviations, such as for units, should follow those listed in the Style Manual. Chemical nomenclature should follow Chemical Abstracts and the IUPAC rules.
  12. Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
  13. The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
