About the journal
Mycotaxon is a quarterly peer-reviewed jour nal exclusively devoted to all phases of the taxonomy and nomenclature of fungi (including lichens). All articles are peer-reviewed by specialists prior to acceptance. Publication is open to all persons. Papers may be in English or French. Printing is on high quality, acid-free book paper. Authors prepare their own camera-ready copy after having received critical comments from presubmission reviewers.
The journal was founded by Co-Editors Grégoire L. Hennebert and Richard P. Korf in 1974. You can view the current people serving as our journal editors and administrators, where we indicate their specific functions and also provide a list of Emeritus Editors as a historical background. There is in addition a distinguished group of mycologists who have volunteered to serve in making recommendations to ensure a future for the journal, our editorial advisory board, where we note the several functions of that Board, its current membership, and its Emeritus members.
The journal typically appears quarterly, but occasionally a fifth issue has been published during the year, such as a special "Festschrift" issue. Volumes have consisted of one, two, or three issues, depending upon the amount of material received, and since volume 3 have consisted of "at least 512 pages." Articles are accepted in English or in French, with summaries or abstracts in any language(s). From 1998 on we expect to publish no more than 4 volumes a year, and subscriptions are now on an annual basis.
Instructions to Authors
Mycotaxon is an international journal for articles on the taxonomy and nomenclature of fungi. Publication is open to everyone. The Editor-in-Chief receives publication-ready text documents and illustrations that have been reviewed prior to submission by two mycological experts. The author is responsible for providing potential peer reviewers with a full set of instructions and for preparing concise, well-formatted, error-free copy that accurately conveys the author's ideas in an economy of space.
No page charges are incurred for papers with fewer than one hundred (100) pages and containing one or fewer halftone plates per ten (10) pages of text. Excess halftones cost $40 each. (There are last-minute correction fees and modest fees for converting hard copy to digital formats, however.)
Mycotaxon submission involves three easy steps:
[1] Peer review, in which the authors send their final manuscript text and illustrations to two expert peer reviewers. (Peer reviewers return complete comments to the author and the expert review comments to the Editor-in-Chief.)
[2] Nomenclature & presubmission review , in which authors send their peer-reviewed master text clone (no graphics) to the Nomenclature Editor and, if the paper is in French, to the French Language Editor.
[3] Final submission, in which authors send all text and illustration materials together with their submission form to the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-Chief, who is available to answer questions at any time, will guide the authors through final submission to publication.
Our most recent Mycotaxon Author instructions can be downloaded as a comprehensive printer-friendly PDF. (Remember to download the free Acrobat Reader when needed.) This file, which provides the most complete information on Mycotaxon requirements & submission protocols, includs a sample manuscript. Authors should also download the Word, Legend, and Table Templates formatted to fit our custom journal page size and the Submission Form to be returned to the Editor-in-Chief with all final submission materials. These files are available as individual downloads and as a complete authoring kit on our file download page.
Authors who maintain datasets for regional checklists are encouraged to submit short summaries (up to 4 pages) for publication in the print journal and to post a lengthier database online, where it can be updated and easily searched. Please read the paragraphs entitled "About checklists" in our Author instructions.
All authors should read detailed information on illustrations from our press before submitting manuscripts with figures.
Authors are expected to provide prospective reviewers with copies of the Reviewer's Guidelines and ask that the peers should return the completed comments form to both Editor-in-Chief and authors. These Guidelines are also available from the file download page.
