About the journal

 MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Microbiological Research is an international journal devoted to publishing original research papers, reviews and short communications on prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, Bacteria, Archaea, Mycota and uni-cellular organisms. Microbiological Research covers articles from many facets of microbiology: antimicrobial drugs - biochemistry - biotechnology - environmental microbiology - genetics - molecular biology - molecular diagnosis - phylogeny - physiology - phytopatholgy - systematics and taxonomy. Papers of very specialised interest or descriptions of technical equipments will normally not be considered.

Instructions to Authors

1.     MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH is an international journal devoted to publishing original research papers, reviews and short communications on prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, Bacteria, Archaea, Mycota and uni-cellular organisms. MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH covers articles from many facets of microbiology: antimicrobial drugs - biochemistry - biotechnology - environmental microbiology - genetics - molecular biology - molecular diagnosis - phylogeny - physiology - phytopatholgy - systematics and taxonomy. Papers of very specialised interest or descriptions of techniqual equipments will normally not be considered.

2.      Submission of a manuscript implies that the submitted work has not been published before (except as part of a thesis or lecture note or report, or in the form of an abstract), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out, that written permission of copyright holders was obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources, that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors hand over the transferable copyrights of the accepted manuscript to the publisher, and that the manuscript or parts thereof will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyrights include, without spatial or timely limitation, the mechanical, electronic and visual reproduction and distribution; electronic storage and retrieval; and all other forms of electronic publication or any other types of publication including all subsidiary rights.

3.      Manuscripts are to be addressed to one of the managing editors according to their fields of expertise.
Prof. Dr. Gabriele Diekert, Institute of Microbiology, Chair of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Friedrich-Schiller-Universitaet Jena, Philosophenweg 12, 07743 Jena, Germany:
Antimicrobial drugs - Biochemistry - Biotechnology - Environmental Microbiology - Physiology
Prof. Dr. Johannes Wöstemeyer, Institute of Microbiology, Chair of General Microbiology and Microbial Genetics, Friedrich-Schiller-Universitaet Jena, Neugasse 24, 07743 Jena, Germany:
Genetics - Molecular Biology - Molecular diagnosis - Phylogeny - Phytopathology - Systematics and taxonomy

4.      Each manuscript submitted to MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH will be reviewed independently by two members of the editorial board or by experts covering the field of the article. Authors may suggest up to five colleagues with expertise in the scientific field of the contribution, which do not and did not belong to the authors' institution. These might be considered as referees. The corresponding authors are informed on the editorial procedure. Papers may be returned for modification or revision. Revised papers should be resubmitted within three months; otherwise they will have to be treated as new submissions.

5.      Papers should be written in English (double spaced throughout with wide margins and aligned to the left). The original typescript or printout with a complete set of figures, suitable for direct reproduction, plus two high-quality copies must be provided. The final version after revision is requested in duplicate, accompanied by a computer disk (31/2 inch, PC or Macintosh format) or a CD with the complete text of the contribution. Disks should be labelled with the name of the corresponding author, type of word processor and the operating system used.

6.      It is expected that all microbial strains, mutants and plasmids described in an accepted paper will be made available to the non-profit orientated scientific community. Authors are requested to deposit microbial isolates in institutional strain or reference collections, where they are made available for the scientific community.

7.      Manuscripts should include:
* Title page. It should contain in this order: title, names of authors, affiliations of authors, an abstract of not more than 150 words, 3-5 key words, and, on the bottom of the first page, the corresponding author ideally together with an e-mail address.
* Introduction. It should provide enough information to point out the scientific background and must cite the relevant publications in the field of the paper. It is not necessary to give an exhaustive review of the topic.
* Materials and methods. This section must be detailed enough to allow reproduction of the experiments described. Novel methods and relevant modifications as well as genuine technical innovations have to be described completely, but there is no need for repeating methods that are published in detail elsewhere. Basic principle of this section is to allow reproducibility of the experimental work.
* Results. This section should present the data as clearly as possible. Authors are encouraged to describe the rationale for the experimental design, but extensive interpretations must be reserved for the Discussion. Please avoid redundancy in the presentation of data. Results in the form of a figure may not be presented additionally as a table or vice versa.
* Discussion. It should give the main conclusions from the experimental data without repeating them in length, and should interpret them with respect to relevant literature. The discussion may be followed by Acknowledgements of personal, institutional and financial assistance.
* References. Citations in the text are given by author and year (Cavalier-Smith 1998). In case of two authors both are named (Voigt and Wöstemeyer 2001). Publications by three or more authors are cited by the first author's name plus et. al. (Neumann et al. 1998). In taxonomic papers complete species citations including authors and year of description are required. Please list the publications in alphabetical order in the References section according to the following examples.

Journals:
Voigt, K., Wöstemeyer, J. (2000): Reliable amplification of actin genes facilitates deep-level phylogeny. Microbiol. Res. 155, 207-213.
Neumann, A., Wohlfarth, G., Diekert, G. (1998): Tetrachloroethene reductive dehalogenase from Dehalospirillum multivorans: Cloning, sequencing of the encoding genes and expression of the pceA gene in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 180, 4140-4145.
Books:
Banuett, F. (1991): Life cycle determinants of the plant pathogen Ustilago maydis. In: More gene manipulations in fungi (Eds: Bennett, J.W., Lasure, L.L.). Academic Press, London, 217- 233.

8.      Figures and Tables are justified only if they are needed to understand the data; mere illustrations are not acceptable. Redundancy of figures and tables must be avoided. Figures must be submitted ready for reproduction on separate sheets, preferentially as high-contrats glossy prints or as clear laser prints. Microphotographs need to contain space bars. Legends are provided separately from the figures and should provide a short title followed by sufficient information to avoid frequent reference to the text. Colour plates are accepted exclusively at the author's cost.

9.      Gene symbols (lexA), scientific names of organisms of all taxonomic ranks (Parasitella parasitica, Mucorales, Zygomycota) as well as non-English words (in situ, in vitro, sensu stricto) are printed in italics or underlined.
The extensive use of abbreviations is discouraged. Abbreviations should be used only if they help to improve clarity of the text.
Please refer to a recent issue of the journal with respect to details of journal style. A sample manuscript in pdf-format can be seen on www.urbanfischer.de/journals/microbiolres.
Authors are requested to use English spelling and to seek help of a native speaker with respect to English style, grammar and expression.

10.  30 offprints of each paper will be provided free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered
