About the journal

Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik provides fundamental and practical information for those concerned with materials development, manufacture, and testing.

Both technical and economic aspects are taken into consideration in order to facilitate choice of the material that best suits the purpose at hand. Review articles summarize new developments and offer fresh insight into the various aspects of the discipline.

Recent results regarding material selection, use and testing are described in original articles, which also deal with failure treatment and investigation. Abstracts of new publications from other journals as well as lectures presented at meetings and reports about forthcoming events round off the journal.

Authors of all articles will receive immediate acknowledgement of receipt of their manuscript. All contributions are subject to refereeing and/or assessment by the editors and/or the International Advisory Board.

A diskette or CD containing the text, references, figure captions, and tables should be sent to the editor upon notification of acceptance of a manuscript for publication. The version on the diskette should be the revised version, if applicable. The software and hardware used should be specified (including the number of version of the word-processing program). Please also save the text file in RTF format. Figures should be supplied in electronic form if possible (disk or CD) in addition to  the original printouts, saved using the software they were created in and also as TIF or EPS files if possible.

Language accepted: English, German
English version:        German Version:
Title English/German      Title German/English
Abstract English/German      Abstract German/English
Text English        Text German
Figure captions English/German    Figure captions German/English
(Fig. 1..., Abb. 1...)      (Abb. 1..., Fig. 1...)
Table captions English/German    Table captions German/English
(Table 1..., Tabelle 1...)      (Tabelle 1..., Table 1...)

Keywords: a maximum of five keywords should be given under the abstract in English and German.
Summaries are to be submitted in both languages; they should be approximately 15 lines in length.

Manuscript Styling: Manuscripts should be typed, with double line spacing, on one side of the paper only. The first names, other initials, and surnames of all authors should be given along with full postal addresses, as well as the fax number and e-mail address of the correspondence author, who should be designated by a star. An original and one copy of the printed manuscript are required, each accompanied by numbered artwork. Display items (figures, schemes, tables) should not be incorporated into the text of the article. Reference lists and figure legends should be submitted on separate sheets.

Artwork should be marked individually and clearly with the author’s name and the figure number. Figures with several parts are permitted only if the parts are closely related either experimentally or logically. Photographs with gray tones or color should be submitted as original glossy prints and also in electronic format. See the guidelines to submission of graphical material for further  information. Numbers, letters, and symbols used must be large enough to be still 1.5 mm high after the figure has been reduced to the printing format. Photographs of structures or work pieces should be accompanied by a scale (e.g. 1 mm).
Note: Do not place figures in the text.

Color artwork can be reproduced. The extra costs associated with this are expected to be met, in part, by the author. The author will be advised of the costs on acceptance of the manuscript for publication.

References should be numbered sequentially as they appear in the text [1] in square brackets..[2-6] Only papers that are published or in press should be referenced. The footnote or endnote option provided by many text programs should not be used. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI). In citing the literature, the format below should be followed as an example:

Journals
[1] A. Leng, H. Streckel, M. Stratmann, Corr. Sci. 1999, 41, 547.
[2] P. Colomban, J. Mater. Res. 1998, 13, 803.
Patents

Books

Tables should be subdivided by three horizontal lines only (two marking the header, one at the base). Footnotes in tables are denoted [a], [b], [c], etc.

Abbreviations: Only generally known abbreviations should be used (e.g. PVC, PTFE, PE etc.). Terms frequently used in the paper may be abbreviated but must be explained (e.g. stress corrosion cracking = SCC).

Trade names should be used only once, giving composition and type of material, respectively, and then be replaced by more general terms (e.g. Hastelloy B = NiMo alloy, Teflon = PTFE).

Do not use chemical symbols or elements and compounds in the text (e.g. do not use HCl for hydrochloric acid).
Formulas of chemical reactions should be written on separate lines and numbered, numbers in round brackets.

Terminology: Due attention should be paid to applicable standards (e.g. ISO, CEN, DIN, BS, ASTM).

Reprints can be ordered when the proofs are returned to the publisher.
