Author Services – Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production. The author will receive an email with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete email address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
Author Guidelines
Most articles in Mass Spectrometry Reviews are written at the invitation of one of the Co-Editors or one of the Subject Editors. However, authors who wish to prepare an unsolicited review of a particular subject are invited to write one of the editors, giving enough details to permit decision or to form a basis for further correspondence. In either case, the author and one of the editors need to agree on an outline before the paper is prepared. All manuscripts will be examined by one of the editors with the help of and the review by a member of the Editorial Board or by ad hoc reviewers.
All correspondence concerning submissions, papers under review, and editorial matters should be sent to one of the Co-Editors: Professor Dominic M. Desiderio, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, 847 Monroe Avenue, Room 117, Memphis, TN 38163, USA, FAX: 901-448-7842, ddesiderio@utmem.edu; or Professor Carlito B. Lebrilla, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, FAX: 916-752-8995, cblebrilla@ucdavis.edu . One may also correspond with one of the Subject Editors: Basic Mass Spectrometry--Professor Einar Uggerud, Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, P.O. Box 1033, Blindern, N-0315 Oslo, Norway, einar.uggerud@kjemi.uio.no ; Applied Mass Spectrometry--Professor Paul Vouros, Department of Chemistry, Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115, USA, p.vouros@neu.edu . All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030
Authors are strongly encouraged to use the Author Checklist while preparing their final manuscript. Using the checklist will facilitate publication of accepted manuscripts.
All manuscripts must be submitted electronically in English (if possible in American spelling). Remember that English is not the native language of many readers; please strive for a simple style.
International Science Editing Services: International Authors who wish to obtain the services of professional English-language editors pre-submission should make contact and arrage payment with the editing service of their choice directly. The following website lists a number of English-language editing suppliers: http://www.internationalscienceediting.com/index.html
MANUSCRIPT FORMATTING
Main text and equation formatting:
Microsoft Word file is the acceptable format for manuscripts. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use MS Word’s automated features to create footnotes or reference lists, however bibliography programs such as Endnote is allowed.
Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format.
PDF files will not be accepted for publication . Please note : This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word’s “Save As” option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
A separate title page listing title, authors, and affiliations should be supplied with each manuscript. In the case of multiple authors, indicate the author responsible for correspondence and checking proofs. Include an email address, a telephone number and the complete mailing address for this author. The title should be as specific as possible within the limit of eight to ten words. Please also supply a short version of the title to be used as a running head.
A Table of Contents listing the major divisions and subdivisions of the paper should follow the title page. Each review should consist of an Introduction, the review matter appropriately organized, an Acknowledgements section (if desired), and a Reference list. The divisions and subdivisions should be numbered with the following hierarchy: Roman numbers, capital letters, Arabic numbers. Items in lists in text should be indicated by lower-case letters or lower-case Roman numbers. A summary of style is provided at the end of these instructions.
All mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulas should also be submitted electronically, included within the manuscript. In the margin, identify all Greek or unusual symbols the first time they are used. Distinguish in the margins of the manuscripts between capital and small letters of the alphabet wherever confusion may arise ( e.g. , k, K; 1, l). Use a wavy line to underline vector quantities. Use fractional exponents to avoid root signs.
Keywords: Please submit a set of keywords for indexing purposes. Three to five keywords will suffice.
Number tables consecutively with Arabic numbers. Give their titles directly following such numbers. Cite all tables consecutively in the text.
Equations (chemical and mathematical), if referred to repeatedly, are numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers in parentheses, placed at the right-hand side of each equation. If referred to repeatedly, structural formulas are numbered consecutively with boldface Arabic numbers. Schemes showing fragmentation pathways are lettered consecutively with capital Roman letters; they do not need to have titles or captions. The individual pathways within schemes can be distinguished with lower-case Roman letters placed on the arrows.
Use the nomenclature sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) for chemical compounds. For nomenclature of mass spectrometry, see the IUPAC rules: J. H. Beynon, Pure Appl. Chem. 1978 , 50, 65–73. Place chemical bonds correctly and indicate double bonds clearly.
SI units are preferred. Similarly, use standard abbreviations (see IUPAC Manual of Symbols and Terminology for Physicochemical Quantities and Units ). Use nonstandard abbreviations sparingly and define them at their first appearance.
Use footnotes only to (a) give special information about the location of the author, or (b) amplify information in tables. Indicate footnotes of type (a) by typographic symbols in the order *, †, ‡, and §; indicate those of type (b) by superscript lower-case letters.
Figures:
All figures must be created and submitted as TIF or EPS files. If it is line art then it may be created in a Word file. Submission in other file formats will not be accepted. Number figures with Arabic numbers. Cite figures consecutively in the manuscript. Gather all figure captions on a separate Word documents placed at the end of the manuscript.
Image resolution: All line art should have a resolution yielding 600-1200 dpi. Grayscale and Color figures must have a resolution yielding 300 dpi. Images should be flattened prior to submission, i.e. files should not contain layers.
Image sizing: Art should be created or scaled to the size intended for print; no enlargement or reduction should be necessary. Digital art files should be cropped to remove non-printing borders. Files should be checked carefully for any type, lines, or other elements outside the illustration that are not intended for print. Such elements should be removed before submission. Image orientation should be the same as intended for print.
Color policy: A limited number of color figures that are of critical importance and significantly enhance the presentation will be considered for publication at the Publisher's expense subject to Editorial recommendation. Final decision on publication of color figures will be at the discretion of the Editors. All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Any cropping of the color figure should be clearly indicated. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Hattie Heavner at 201-748-6047/ hheavner@wiley.com
for further information. Color proofs will be sent to the contributor for approval prior to printing.
If in doubt about the preparation of illustrations, please contact the publisher at the address given above (Att: Journals Production Dept.).
References:
Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style. Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
References and notes should appear on line and list authors' last names in parenthesis with the text in the order of their appearance [(Smith, 1997); (Smith & Jones, 1997); (Smith, Jones, & Rogers, 1997); (Smith et al., 1997)]. Gather them together at the end of the text and list in alphabetical order. Bibliographic references should be complete and follow the samples following this paragraph. Journal title abbreviations must conform to those used in Chemical Abstracts . The title is added for each reference. If reference is made to a generally unavailable journal, especially if used only through an abstract journal, reference should be made to this abstract journal too. Citations such as "manuscript in preparation," "unpublished report," and "private correspondence" should not be included in the references. However, such citations may be made parenthetically in text. Proceedings of some scientific meetings (e.g., such as the American Society of Mass Spectrometry) are not peer-reviewed, and (except for very rare cases) are not acceptable as a reference.
