About the journal

MARINE AND FRESHWATER BEHAVIOUR AND PHYSIOLOGY

This journal is devoted to the publication of papers on research into the physiology of marine and freshwater animals. The coverage of the journal includes all fields of physiology as well as behavioural and neurobiological matters. Field and laboratory-based studies of excretion, osmoregulation, digestion, respiration, feeding, migration, reproduction, tidal and other rhythms, neurophysiology, neuromuscular, sensory motor control, anatomy (where relevant to physiological understanding), fine structure and scanning electron microscopy are all appropriate subjects. Studies on behaviour of animals in the aquatic environment, both natural and simulated in the laboratory, also fall into the ambit of the journal. Short reviews will be published from time to time, as will occasional book reviews.

 Cover

The living resources of the world's oceans, rivers and lakes are attracting increased attention as food sources for mankind. The journal will also publish the results of research involving behaviour and physiology that overlap into the areas of Aquaculture, Fisheries Biology, Fisheries Technology, Fisheries Oceanography, Fisheries Economics and Management, Fisheries Engineering or Seafood Science and Technology, or that have implications for these aspects of aquatic research.

MARINE AND FRESHWATER BEHAVIOUR AND PHYSIOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. The effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.

SUBMISSION Submission of a paper to this journal will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that, if accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form in any language, without the consent of the editor and publisher. It will be assumed that the submitting author has permission to act on behalf of all co-authors and has obtained all necessary permissions to use items such as quotations, figures, tables, results of government-sponsored research etc., and that the research complies with all applicable animal and research ethics codes. It is a condition of acceptance by the editor of a typescript for publication that the publisher automatically acquires the copyright of the typescript throughout the world.

TYPESCRIPTS

Full papers: Manuscripts should be submitted on good quality paper with type on one side only, double spaced, leaving margins of at least 3cm. An original and two copies should be submitted. The authors' names, originating laboratories and addresses, and any acknowledgements may be omitted from the copies if the authors wish to have the manuscripts refereed blind.

The preferred order of presentation for a full paper is Title Page (include title, authors, affiliations, up to six keywords, suggested running headline of up to 35 characters, mailing address of corresponding author, this address will be used for proofs unless otherwise requested, FAX and email addresses where available), Abstract (up to 150 words), Introduction, Methods, Results (and/or) Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure legends and Figures. Footnotes should not be used. Non-standard abbreviations should be defined when first used in the manuscript. Either English or American spelling and grammar conventions may be used as long as the usage is consistent throughout. For submission on disk, see below.

Short communications: Brief descriptions of original results or new methods that occupy approximately four printed pages (including figures and tables) will, if accepted, normally be included in the next available issue. These should include the same elements as a full paper but neither an abstract nor section headings are required.

Reviews, Book Reviews and Special Issues: Reviews and Book Reviews will be accepted for publication. Papers and reviews based on scientific meetings or other collections of material that fall within the subject area of the journal may be published as Special Issues. Proposals should be discussed with the Editor.

TEXT HEADINGS Headings should be set over to the left-hand margin and the following text should begin on the next line. For example:

FIRST LEVEL HEADINGS

Second Level Headings

Third level headings. With text run on directly after heading. Only initial letter in capitals.

FIGURES

One set of original figures numbered with consecutive arabic numerals should be provided. These must be of a standard suitable for direct reproduction and with all lettering and symbols included. Good quality photocopies of line diagrams may be supplied with the reviewers' copies but photographic copies should be supplied for all half-tone and photographic material. Photographs intended for half-tone reproduction must be high quality, glossy, original prints of maximum contrast. All figures should be labelled on the back with soft pencil to indicate the author's name, figure number and "top" where this is not obvious.

The preferred width of submitted figures is 21cm (with 4mm high lettering) so that they will reduce to 10.5cm column width when reduced by one-half. Authors deviating from this recommendation are required to ensure that letter sizes are consistent across all figures submitted following allowance for reduction to 10.5cm column width and that figure shape is compatible with page dimensions.

TABLES

Number tables consecutively with arabic numerals and refer to them in the text. Each table should contain a short descriptive caption at the top. Avoid the use of vertical lines to separate columns.

TEXT CALL-OUTS TO FIGURES, TABLES, SECTIONS, SCHEMES

Text call-outs to figures, tables and other elements are the basis for searching articles on electronic delivery. Therefore, proper designation of text call-outs to figures and other elements is essential to the success of electronic delivery. When referring to a figure, table or other element within an article, always call the element by its full name: "See Table 1", "Figure1 illustrates...", "Refer to Scheme 1". Do not use ambigous call-outs (for example, "1 illustrates...") that do not clearly denote the element being referred to.

REFERENCES References are indicated in the text by the Harvard (name and date) system; either "Recent work (Li, 1993; Smith, 1994)..." or "Recently, Li (1993) and Smith (1994) have found...", et al. should be used for citations with more than two authors. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Each reference should list the author's last name, followed by all initials, year, manuscript title, name of publication (journals abbreviated to follow the World List of Scientific Periodicals), volume and inclusive page numbers. Multiple references to work in the same year should be labelled e.g. 1984a,b,c.

It is assumed that, with the development of the World Wide Web (WWW), authors and/or the publisher will propose distribution of articles or parts of articles on the WWW. If the author knows the HTTP address of a referenced article on the WWW, this information should be added at the end of the reference. Please use the following style:

[www http://www.blouk.com/article.html]

where http://www.blouk.com/article.html is the HTTP address.

SUBMISSION OF ARTICLES ON DISK

The publisher welcomes article submission on disk. Instructions for Disk Submission may be obtained from the journal editor or the Publisher.

SUBMISSION OF ANIMATION

Author-supplied animation related to articles accepted for publication will be included in the journal CDROM at no cost to authors. Animations are limited to a time duration of 30 seconds. Animation should be submitted to the journal editor with the final manuscript, after it has completed the refereeing process.

Animations in the following forms (in order of preference) can be accepted from authors:

  • Video tape
  • AVI or Quick Time files
  • A Sequence of still images.

The following formats can be accepted:

  • all uncompressed formats widely used on PC, Mac ad UNIX
  • JPEG for colored and compressed images

Authors who submit animations are requested to provide the following information:

  • Video tape - format used.
  • AVI or Quick Time files - version used, and system used for disk file creation.
  • Sequence of still images - format used, version and system used for disk file creation.

Authors who are unable to supply video tape, AVI or Quick Time files may provide the publisher with a set of sequential still images. Note that an animated sequence will consist of 13 to 15 still images per second of animation; e.g., if an animated sequence is 10 seconds in duration, it is made up of 130 images. Authors who are unable to submit in any of the above-mentioned formats are advised to contact the publisher to discuss other options prior to submission.

Animation should be mentioned in the text. Indicate an approximate location for the animation call-out in the typescript margin.

PROOFS

Authors will receive page proofs (including figures) by airmail for correction. These should be returned to the printer within 48 hours. Authors' alterations in excess of 10% of the original composition cost will be charged to authors. A form assigning copyright and acknowledging compliance with permission, ethics and other requirements to be signed by corresponding author and returned with proofs.
