Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere. Authors may wish to consult an appropriate member of the Editorial Board prior to submission. On acceptance, papers become the copyright of the Journal and all accepted papers should be accompanied by a copyright assignment form. To access this form please click here.

The original plus two copies should be submitted to aid refereeing and these should be typed (with a wide margin), double spaced, on one side of standard paper (A4 30 ¡Á 21 cm).

A title page should contain the author's name(s), place of work, address for correspondence, full title and short running title. Authors should retain one copy of text, tables and illustrations as the Editors cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of manuscripts.

The text should be preceded by a short abstract not exceeding 200 words and should then proceed to sections of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, or other sections as appropriate. Pages should be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals, but tables, figure legends including magnifications, and acknowledgements should be submitted on separate sheets. Tables and figures should be referred to in the text together with an indication of their approximate position recorded in the text margin. Abbreviations and Terminology

Spelling should conform to that of standard dictionaries (e.g. The Concise English Dictionary, Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary). Style should conform to that of standard manuals of English usage. Contributions who are not fluent in English should seek skilled advice on the composition of their manuscripts. Units of measurement, symbols and standard abbreviations should conform to those recommended by the International Union of Bio-Chemistry (IUB) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Metric measurements are preferred, and dosages should be expressed entirely in metric units. Tables

Tables should be typed on separate pages. They should be understandable without reference to the text. Each table should have a short descriptive heading. Units in which the results are expressed should appear at the top of each column. Abbreviations should be defined in a footnote the first time they are used.

The author may be charged for expensive typesetting of complicated tables or formulae. The latter should preferably be submitted as original drawings or photographs for presentation as figures. Figures

The author must submit three copies of each figure. One of which must be of high quality and suitable for reproduction while the other may be in the form of photostat copies. Figures must be numbered in sequence with arabic numerals. Each figure should be identified by its number, the name of the author, and the first words of the title of the article, written in pencil on the back. The top should be indicated.

Each figure should have a legend containing sufficient information to make the figure intelligible without reference to the text. All the legends must be typed together, in double spacing, on a separate sheet or sheets.

Graphs should be plotted on blue graph or plain white paper: grid lines that are to be reproduced should be inked in black.

Photographs should be submitted as unmounted glossy enlargements showing good contrast. An overlay may be used to indicate masking instructions and magnification scales, lettering or arrows for insertion by the publishers.

All figures must be prepared with the format of the journal in mind: on reduction, the figures should either fit one column (86 mm wide, 235 mm deep) or the full width of both columns (179 mm). References

The reference list should be in alphabetical order and include the full title thus:

Eddy, R.G. (1977) The use of cloprostenal in the treatment of no visible oestrus and cystic ovarian disease in dairy cows. Veterinary Record, 109, 62-65.

Moe, G.K. & Abildskov, J.A. (1980). Antiarrhythmic drugs. In The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics. 6th edn. Eds Gilman, A.G., Goodman, L.S. & Gilman. A. pp. 683-704. Macmillan, New York.

References in the text should cite the name of the author followed by the year of publication, e.g. (Brown, 1978). When reference is made to a work by two authors, both names should be given, e.g. (Brown & White, 1978): for three or more authors. the first name followed by et al. should be used, e.g. (Brown et al., 1978). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references. Proofs

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs. Free Copies and Offprints

Two free copies of the relevant issues of the Journal will be supplied to the corresponding author only. Offprints may be purchased at prices determined by the Publisher by returning the form enclosed with page proofs. Review Articles

Authors who are planning or preparing larger review-type articles should contact the Editors. Short Communications

These should differ from full papers on the basis of scope or completeness, rather than quality of data. They may report significant new data arising from problems with narrow, well-defined limits, or important findings that warrant rapid publication before broader studies are complete. The text should neither exceed 1500 words (approximately 6 pages of typescript) nor be divided up into conventional sections. To aid rapid publication the Editors may undertake responsibility for correcting proofs. When submitting short communications, authors should make it clear that their work is to be treated as such. Disks

The journal welcomes the submission of accepted articles on disk. Do not justify the lines of text. All disks must be accompanied by a hard copy of the paper, together with a file description form: (http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/fdf.pdf). Particular attention should be taken to ensure that any articles submitted in this form adhere exactly to journal style. Further details may be obtained from the Publisher.
