The Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation (J Vet Diagn Invest), an international journal published bi-monthly in English, is devoted to all aspects of veterinary diagnostic medicine. The major disciplines are molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, clinical pathology, parasitology, anatomical pathology, toxicology, computer science, epidemiology, and public health as applied to veterinary diagnostic medicine.
The Editor will accept original manuscripts for review with the understanding that the same material is not being considered for publication and has not been published elsewhere by another publisher. All submitted manuscripts must have the approval of all authors and the institution where the work was carried out. Manuscripts will be reviewed by one or more persons selected by the Editor. Those not accepted for publication will be returned to the submitting author.
Upon acceptance for publication, the authors agree to transfer copyright to the publisher. All articles published in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation are protected by copyright, which covers their exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article and the translation rights. The submitting author will be required to sign a copyright transfer agreement at the time of acceptance of the manuscript. The Journal will not publish the manuscript if the agreement is not executed.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts. Manuscripts must be letter quality, submitted in triplicate, typewritten, and double-spaced (including references) on one side of 8.5- x11-inch (215 x 280 mm) white paper with 1-inch (25 mm) margins on all sides (number each page at top center). Three formats (original [full] articles, brief communications, and review articles) will be considered. A digital copy should accompany typewritten copies of manuscripts that have been accepted for publication. The preferred format for digital files in Microsoft Word. Files should be sent to the editor on a 3.5-inch diskette. Special arrangements for file transfer or alternative storage media can be made by contacting the editor.
Title page. The first page should include the full title of the paper, the authors?full names, the name and location of the institution, a short running title (original [full] articles only), and a name and address to whom galley proofs are to be sent.
Abstract. All articles (original [full] articles, brief communications, and reviews) must include an abstract that is concise, factual, and without reference to the text. Abbreviations and reference citations should not be used.
Formats. Manuscripts for original (full) articles should consist of an Introduction (untitled), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Sources and Manufacturers, and References. Manufacturer’s name, address, and source of materials should be designated by superscript lowercase letters in alphabetic sequence. Generic names of drugs shall be used in the text. Trade names for commercial test kits, equipment, chemicals, etc., are not to be included in the text but should be listed with the appropriate citation in the Sources and Manufacturers section. Use subheadings in Materials and Methods and Results sections as required for clarity. Brief communications should be limited to approximately four printed pages including illustrations, tables, and references (generally 12-15 should be sufficient) and should be written in narrative form without headings, except for References. Case reports may be written as full articles or as brief communications, with references. Review articles generally will be by invitation and should cover subjects of current and broad interest.
Style. Only abbreviations in common use (e.g., ELISA, DNA) and only metric units of measurement are acceptable. Less common abbreviations may be used after first mention with complete spelling. Arabic numerals should be used except when a number begins a sentence.
Tables. Tables must be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet with the title typed directly above the table. Tables must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Explain in footnotes all nonstandard abbreviations. References to footnotes should be indicated by symbols (*, ? ? ? ? ? #, **, ††, ‡‡, etc., in order).
Illustrations. All illustrations (line drawings, graphs, charts, and photographs) should be cited in the text as figures, numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Line illustrations should be drawn on drafting paper or illustration board in India ink or produced with a computer and printed on a laser printer. Simple illustrations should be designed for one column. Complicated illustrations should be designed to reproduce in two columns. Submit original copy whenever possible. Typewritten illustration copy should be avoided. Photographs should be submitted unmounted as glossy prints in a size for one- or two-column width or a size that will permit minimal reduction. Other illustrations (graphs, charts, drawings) should be printed on glossy or semi-glossy paper. The figure number, author’s name, and top of figure should be printed on a gummed label and placed on the back. Do not write on the backs of illustrations, and protect them from damage in the mails. Authors will pay for printing color photographs. Refer to "Steps Toward Better Scientific Illustrations," by Arly Allen, Allen Press, Inc., Lawrence, KS 66044.
Captions. Captions for illustrations must be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet and should be concise, but adequate. Identify stain and provide a magnification bar as needed. Indicate magnification on electron micrographs with a bar and explain in caption.
Sources and manufacturers. Sources for supplies should be cited in a lettered list (to correspond to superscript letters in the text) typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Manufacturer’s name and address or name and address of other supplier of materials should be provided.
References. References must be arranged alphabetically and numbered consecutively. Names of authors will not be used in the text. The number of the reference is put in superscript, e.g., "Recent studies 1, 3 , 5-7 have shown?" Journal abbreviations should be according to "Index Medicus." List all authors when there are four or fewer; when there are five or more authors, list the first three and add "et al."

Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all references. Only published material is listed in references. Personal communications, unpublished observations, and abstract citations should appear in the text within parentheses. Meeting proceedings and citations from other non-refereed publications should be avoided.
Page charges. There is a manuscript processing fee of $75 for each printed page published in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation.
Color.Plate charges are $775 each.
Reprints. The corresponding author should order reprints from the printer at the time galley proofs are returned.
