About the journal

The Journal of the Neurological Sciences provides a medium for the prompt publication of studies on the interface between clinical neurology and the basic sciences. Emphasis is placed on sound scientific developments which are or will soon become relevant to the clinician.

Its scope includes neuromuscular diseases, demyelination, atrophies, dementia, neoplasms, infections, and disturbances of consciousness, stroke and cerebral circulation, growth and development, plasticity and intermediary metabolism.

The fields covered are neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, neuroepidemiology, neurogenetics, neuroimmunology, neuroophthalmology, neuropathology, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neurotoxicology, restorative neurology, and tropical neurology.

Papers which integrate, elucidate and educate in a succinct manner are particularly welcome, Reviews, Research Reports and Short Reports are published, as are Book Reviews and News and Notes from the World Federation of Neurology and its various Research Groups. Announcements are carried at the Editor's and Publisher's discretion.

Instructions to Authors

Submission
The preferred medium of final submission to the accepting Editor is on disk with the accompanying reviewed and revised manuscript (see "Electronic manuscripts" below). Submission of a paper to the Journal of the Neurological Sciences is understood to imply that it has not previously been published (except in abstract form) and that it is not being published elsewhere. Submitted manuscripts should be accompanied by a statement undersigned by all listed authors that they concur with the submission and that the manuscript has been approved by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out. If accepted, the manuscript shall not be published elsewhere in the same form in either the same or any other language, without the consent of the Editor and Publisher. The decision of the Editor is final. The Editor cannot enter into correspondence about a paper considered unsuitable for publication.

Authors in Japan please note:
Upon request, Elsevier Science K.K. will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Elsevier Science K.K., 1-9-15 Higashi-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044. Tel.: +81-3-5561-5032, Fax: +81-3-5561-5045, e-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp

Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be sent first class mail to the Editor: Robert P. Lisak, MD, Department of Neurology, University Health Center, Wayne State University School of Medicine, 4201 St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 48201, USA; Fax: +1-313-993-9311. Manuscripts, written in English, must be submitted in quadruplicate in double-spaced typing on pages of uniform size (preferably A4 or 8x11"). The name and full postal address, including fax number and e-mail address, of the author to whom proofs are to be sent should be given. As a rule, papers should be divided into sections, headed by a caption (e.g., Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Reference). N.B. Manuscripts and figures for review will not be returned to authors whether the editorial decision is to accept, revise, or reject. The only exception will occur when the Editor returns a manuscript with handwritten editorial suggestions to authors to aid them in making revisions.

Electronic Manuscripts
Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. The preferred storage medium is a 3.5 inch disk in MS-DOS format, although other systems are welcome, e.g., NEC and Macintosh (in this case, save your file in the usual manner, do not use the option "save in MS-DOS format"). Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Ensure that the letter "l" and digit "1" (also letter "O" and digit "0") have been used properly, and structure your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your wordprocessor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g., gralpha, @, #, etc., for the Greek letter ). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key.
Do not allow your wordprocessor to introduce word splits and do not use a "justified" layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. It is very important that you save your file in the wordprocessor format. If your wordprocessor features the option to save files "in flat ASCII", please do not use it. Format your disk correctly and ensure that only the relevant file (one complete article only) is on the disk. Also, specify the type of computer and wordprocessing package used and label the disk with your name and the name of the file on the disk. After final acceptance, your disk plus one, final, printed and exactly matching version (as a printout) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. It is important that the file on disk and the printout are identical. Both will then be forwarded by the editor to Elsevier. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.

Illustrations
All figures should be in a form suitable for immediate reproduction (i.e. originals, no photocopies). Line drawings should be done in black ink on drawing or tracing paper. Lettering should be of professional standard and large enough to withstand reduction. Alternatively, lettering can be done in fine pencil. All photographs must be submitted as clear black and white prints on glossy paper (preferably no smaller than 4x5" (10x12 cm) and no larger than 8x10" (20x25 cm)). The degree of reproduction will be determined by the Publisher.

Colour Reproduction
Reproduction in colour will have to be approved by the Editor. Authors will be required to pay a fee towards the extra costs incurred in colour reproduction. The charges are Dfl. 600.00 (approx. USD 300) for the first page involving colour, and Dfl. 400.00 (approx. USD 200) per page for all subsequent pages involving colour in a given article (all prices including sales tax). Colour figures should be submitted as separate prints and not be mounted on cardboard. Slides taken from labelled prints are also acceptable.

Legends for Figures
Legends for figures must be typed, also with double spacing, on separate pages. If illustrations from previous articles or books are to be used in papers submitted to the Journal of the Neurological Sciences, the written permission of both author and publisher must accompany each illustration.

Tables
Tables must be typed (with double spacing) on separate pages and should be provided with a short descriptive heading and, if applicable, a legend.

Abstract
An abstract of approximately 200 words is mandatory at the beginning of each article. Authors' full names, academic or professional affiliations, and complete addresses must be included on the title page.

Key Words
6-8 items must be included on the title page. Authors are encouraged to choose their own key words, but Medical Subject Headings (issued with the January IndexMedicus, latest edition) may be used as a guideline.

References
References to literature must be indicated by Arabic numerals which run consecutively through the paper. Where a reference is cited more than once in the text the same number should be used each time. Reference style should follow the "Vancouver" style described in the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (published in N Engl J Med 1997;336:309-315). The titles of journals should be abbreviated in conformity with Index Medicus. The following are sample styles:

[1] Bondi M, Kaszniak A. Implicit and explicit memory in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. J Clin Exp Neuropsychol 1991;13:339-58.

[2] Wechsler D. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. New York: Grune & Stratton, 1976.

[3] Hirst W, Volpe B. Automatic and effortful encoding in amnesia. In: Gazzaniga M, editor. Handbook of cognitive neuroscience. New York: Plenum Press, 1984:369-86.

Please ensure that references are complete, i.e. that they include, where relevant, the author's name, article or book title, volume and issue number, publisher and publisher's location, and page reference.

This journal should be abbreviated as J Neurol Sci.

Informed Consent/Ethics of Experimentation
Authors reporting experimental studies onhumans must specify that the research received prior approval bythe appropriate institutional review body and that informedconsent was obtained from each subject or patient. Manuscripts describing investigations in animals must clearly indicate the steps taken to eliminate pain and suffering. Approval by the appropriate animal experimentation committee should be indicated. Authors have a duty to protect their subjects, animal or human, and to show clearly in their writing a recognition of the moral issues involved.

Phase III Trials
Manuscripts reporting the results of Phase III trials must follow the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines. For more information on these guidelines, please refer to: Begg, C, Cho, M. Eastwood, S, et al. Improving the quality of randomized controlled trials: the CONSORT statement. JAMA 1996; 276:637-639.

Potential Conflict of Interest Disclosure
Authors must include in the cover letter accompanying the article submitted for review a full disclosure of all conflicts of interest and commercial relationships including grants, honoraria, speaker's lists, significant ownership, and/or support from pharmaceutical or other companies such as manufactures of equipment, diagnostic or other laboratories whose products are directly or indirectly involved or affected by the article. Authors must explicitly acknowledge the source of support for the study submitted both in the letter and as a separate page of the manuscript

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the first-named authorof an article unless an alternative is requested on the titlepage of the manuscript. They should be checked carefully andreturned to the publisher by airmail within 2 days of receipt.Only typesetting errors may be corrected: no changes in or additions to the edited original manuscript will be allowed atthis stage.

Reprints
Reprints may be ordered by completing and returning to the Publisher the order form sent with the proofs. 50 free reprints per contribution will be made available.
