About the journal

The Journal of the London Mathematical Society publishes papers (normally 11-21 pages each) on the whole spectrum of mathematics. The wide scope of the journal may be judged from the substantial breadth of research interests covered by the Editorial Advisory Board. Visit: http://lms.ac.uk/publications/advisers.html

Instructions to Authors

The London Mathematical Society publishes three printed research periodicals: the Proceedings, Journal and Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society.

Papers are allocated among the three printed periodicals according to length. Longer papers are normally published in the Proceedings and those of medium length in the Journal. The Bulletin publishes survey articles, short research papers, book reviews and obituaries.

Electronic Submission

Stop Press - new electronic submission guidelines

You may submit papers electronically as Postscript or PDF files. To do this you will need to complete a web form.

Papers sent this way are generally reviewed more quickly than papers sent by post but only if the PS or PDF file is printable and the form is completed accurately.

Before filling in the form, please read through this checklist of files and information you will need to have to hand when completing it:

  • Be sure to have a single PDF or PS file version of your paper ready to be uploaded via the ftp link that you will find at the end of the form.
  • Please keep the .tex file that precisely corresponds to the .PS or .PDF version that you have submitted. If your paper is accepted, we will require that particular version of the .tex file. Please do not send the .tex file at this time. Papers that use the new LMS class file may be published more quickly; see further down this page for details on how to obtain the class file.
  • If you are submitting a revised version of your paper, please check that you have the reference number of the paper to hand and ensure that you use a different filename from the original version and please avoid using easily duplicated filenames, such as paper.pdf or article.ps.
  • On the form, you will be asked for the surname of the Editorial Adviser whose mathematical interests are closest to the subject of your paper. It is advisable to study the list before filling in the form and check you have the most appropriate adviser.
  • You will be sent an acknowledgement once we have confirmed your file is printable. In all other respects, for advice on submitting a paper, please follow the Submission Guidelines below.

      Link to the web form.

We are sorry that we shall not acknowledge or open any files of papers submitted via e-mail. If you have a problem in completing the form or uploading the file, please send a brief e-mail to the Publisher, Dr Susan Hezlet, at hezlet@lms.ac.uk, describing the problem. Then submit your paper by post following the guidelines in the next section.

      Submission by Post

Alternatively, send three hard copies by post to:

      Assistant Editor
      London Mathematical Society
      De Morgan House
      57-58 Russell Square
      London WC1B 4HS
      England

      Include a letter giving:

      1. the title and authors of the paper,
      2. the full address details of the corresponding author, including e-mail address,
      3. an abstract of the paper,
      4. the name of the Editorial Adviser whose mathematical interests are closest to your paper's subject,
      5. whether a LaTeX file of the paper is available. Please keep the .tex file that precisely corresponds to the version that you have submitted. If your paper is accepted, we will require that particular version of the .tex file. Please do not send the .tex file at this time.

      * NEW LMS CLASS FILE *

Authors are encouraged to prepare their manuscripts in the new "LMS" document class for LaTeX2e. The class file and its accompanying, concise author guide can be downloaded here. It is easy to convert papers to lms.cls from article.cls or amsart.cls, and the availability of an accepted final version prepared as a .tex file in lms.cls can significantly reduce the time to publication.

The preparation of the manuscript in either article.cls or amsart.cls may also possibly lead to a (small) reduction in the production time in comparison with other formats.

Please remember that only PDF or Postscript formats should be submitted electronically in the first instance. Even if you have prepared your paper using our class file, we do not want to receive the .tex files unless and until the paper has been finally accepted for publication by the Editors.

Please read the Instructions for Authors (Proceedings, Journal and Bulletin) for further information.

      General Submission Guidelines

      • Provided that all of the necessary information described above has been received and the paper is legible, an acknowledgement will be sent within 21 days to the corresponding author. If you don't receive an acknowledgement, please check your files to ensure you sent all of the information before contacting the Assistant Editor. The corresponding author will also be sent a username and password that will provide access an Author Report which tracks the progress of the paper through the review process.

      • Papers should be submitted in English, French or German.

      • No paper that has been previously published, or which is being considered for publication elsewhere, should be submitted to the London Mathematical Society.

      • Nor may a paper that is under consideration by the London Mathematical Society be submitted elsewhere.

      • Papers will no longer be returned to authors on request. Authors should take care to keep a copy of all paperwork sent to the Society. The Society cannot accept responsibility for loss of manuscripts.

      Upon acceptance for publication:

      • You will be asked to assign copyright to the Society.
