About the journal
JPEN is the premier scientific journal of nutrition and metabolic support. It publishes original, peer-reviewed studies that define the cutting edge of basic and clinical research in the field. It explores the science of optimizing the care of patients receiving enteral or IV therapies. Also included: reviews, techniques, brief reports, case reports, and abstracts. JPEN is indexed by the following: Index Medicus, BIOSIS, Current Contents, Excerpta Medica, Reference Update, Research Alert, SciSearch, Silver Platter, and UMI.
Instructions to Authors
Section on Metabolic Support—Call for Papers The JPEN section on Metabolic Support seeks original manuscripts deriving from hypothesis-driven preclinical research relevant to patients requiring specialized nutrition support. Metabolic investigations of nutritional pharmacotherapeutic mechanisms in patients and normal subjects are also welcomed. Investigations using minor modifications of existing and/or currently available commercial therapies and technologies should not be submitted unless they represent new observations deriving from prospective, randomized trials in humans. Relevant areas would also include novel therapies arising from the utilization of recombinant technologies or gene modification strategies.
The relevance of submitted manuscripts to Metabolic Support should be readily evident from the abstract and further clarified in a cover letter. The cover letter should also include the signed statements required of all submissions, as outlined in the Instructions for Authors.
A fast-track review system as well as an accelerated acceptance-to-publication time have been established to accommodate these submissions.
Stephen F. Lowry, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, and Dwight Matthews, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Chemistry, the University of Vermont College of Medicine, oversee this section.
All inquiries and submissions should be directed to:

Manuscripts are considered with the understanding that they have not been published previously, except in abstract form or as preliminary observations, and are not under consideration by another publication.
Manuscript Categories: Manuscripts may be submitted in any of the following categories: Original Communications (basic and clinical research); Metabolic Support; Techniques, Materials, and Devices; Brief Communications (abbreviated reports for rapid publication, including preliminary observations); Reviews; Case Reports; Editorials; and Letters to the Editor.
Cover Letter: Designate one author as correspondent and provide complete mail and e-mail addresses, telephone number, and fax number. The names of up to three potential reviewers of the manuscript may be supplied. In the cover letter, include the three statements described below: (1) statement on authorship responsibility, (2) statement on financial disclosure, and (3) one of the two statements on copyright transfer or federal employment. Each of these statements must be signed by all authors.
1. Authorship Responsibility: "I certify that I have participated sufficiently in the conception and design of this work and the analysis of data (when applicable), as well as the writing of the manuscript, to take public responsibility for it. I believe the manuscript represents valid work. I have reviewed the final version of the manuscript and approve it for publication. Neither this manuscript nor one with substantially similar content under my authorship has been published or is being considered for publication elsewhere, except as described in an attachment. Further-more, I attest that I shall produce the data upon which the manuscript is based for examination by the editors or assignees if requested."
2. Financial Disclosure: "I certify that affiliations (if any) with or involvement in any organization or entity with a direct financial interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (eg, employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria) are disclosed below. All sources of direct support for this project are listed in an Acknowledgment." 3a. Copyright Transfer: "In consideration of the action of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) in reviewing and editing this submission, all copyright ownership is hereby transferred, assigned, or otherwise conveyed to A.S.P.E.N. by the author(s) in the event that A.S.P.E.N. publishes this work." 3b. Federal Employment: "I was an employee of the U.S. federal government when this work was carried out and prepared for publication. There-fore, it is not protected by the Copyright Act and there is no copyright of which ownership can be transferred."
Informed Consent: If the manuscript reports the results of an experimental investigation of human subjects, state formally that an appropriate institutional review board approved the project and/or that informed consent was obtained from subjects after the nature of the procedure(s) had been explained. Include a signed statement of consent from the patient (or, if the patient is a minor, from both parents or the legal guardian) with all identifiable photographs. Consent forms must contain a statement that photographs and information about a case may be published separately or together and that the patient’s name will not be disclosed. To preserve the anonymity of patients, all patient identifiers will be removed in accordance with HIPPA guidelines.
Manuscript Submission: Manuscripts may be submitted either by electronic media or in a conventional manuscript form. Electronic submission is encouraged.
Electronic format: Submit by e-mail to jpen@aspen.nutr.org. Indicate the name and version number of the word processing program. Figures should be in JPEG format, high resolution (file size 500K to 1M). Separately, send in two 5x7 glossy photographs of each illustration, to facilitate the eventual publishing process.
Manuscript format: Submit the original manuscript and two photocopies (total of three copies), printed or typed on one side only of standard-sized white paper using ample margins. Include a diskette or CD-ROM of the text and tables. Diskettes and CD-ROM should be formatted for the PC. Submit three 5 x 7 glossy photographs of each illustration.
Manuscript Preparation
Format: Double-space throughout, including title page, abstract, text, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. Standard 10- or 12-pitch type and spacing are preferred to proportional spacing. Number each page consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, beginning with the title page. Use Systeme Internationale (SI) mea-surements. Use generic names of drugs, unless the specific trade name of a drug is directly relevant to the discussion. Do not use abbreviations in the title or abstract, and limit their use in the text, citing the term in full at its first use.
Title page: On the title page, list each author’s full name, highest academic degree, and affiliation. If an author’s affiliation has changed since the work was done, list the new affiliation as well. Also state the name and affiliation of any statistical reviewer consulted.
Pre´cis: The title page should include a pre?cis, or abbreviated abstract, which will be published in the Table of Contents. In two or three sentences and less than 50 words, describe the study or its significance. Do not repeat information that is in the title.

Briefly describe the study design and variables. (3) Results. Describe the main findings; and (4) Conclusions. Emphasize new or important aspects of the study or observations.
References: Number references in the order they are mentioned in the text; do not alphabetize. In text, tables, and legends, identify references with superscript Arabic numberals. In listing references, follow AMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. If there are more than six authors, use et al following the third author. Examples:
-
Davis JT, Allen HD, Powers JD, Cohen DM. Population requirements for capitation planning in pediatric cardiac surgery. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1996;150:257-259.
-

Tables: Double-space on separate sheets. Title all tables and number them in order of their citation in text. If a table must be continued, repeat the title on a second sheet, followed by "(cont.)."
Illustrations: Submit 5 x 7-inch glossy photographs for all graphs and black-and-white photographs, high-contrast prints for x-rays, or slides for color illustrations. Note that there will be a charge to the authors for printing color illustrations. Number illustrations in order of their citation in text. Affix figure number, author’s name, short form of manuscript title, and an arrow indicating "top" to the back of the illustration. Never mark on the print or transparency itself.
Legends for Illustrations: Double-space legends (maximum length, 40 words) on separate pages. Indicate magnification and stain used for photomicrographs.
Acknowledgements and permissions: Acknowledge all illustrations and tables taken from other publications and submit the original publishers?written permission to reprint in JPEN.

Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work, including changes made by the copyeditor and authorized by the corresponding author.
Reprints: Reprint order forms are included with the galley proofs sent for approval. Reprints will be shipped four to five weeks after publication of the issue.
