INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
To reduce publication time and improve accuracy, the JOURNAL OF OCULAR PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS uses direct reproduction methods. Your final manuscript will be directly photocopied and printed by offset. Before acceptance, your paper will be anonymously reviewed by two or more competent peers.
Please carefully prepare your manuscript according to the following instructions and then send one original and two copies of the manuscript and two originals of all photographed material to: Dr. George C.Y. Chiou, Institute of Ocular Pharmacology, Texas A&M University College of Medicine, College Station, Texas 77843, U.S.A. Please indicate the author who is to receive correspondence and pertinent phone number and fax number. A cover letter should accompany the manuscript stating that it is original material and is not being considered elsewhere.
GENERAL TYPING INSTRUCTIONS: Legal paper may be used (8-1/2" x 14"). The text, abstract, tables, and references should be typed single-spaced. Do not leave a space between paragraphs. Indent the first sentence of each paragraph five (5) spaces. Typed text, drawings, graphs, tables, etc. should form a page 6-3/4 inches (17.25 cm) wide and 10-1/4 inches (26 cm) long. The first page (beginning with the ABSTRACT) should start 4-1/4 inches (11 cm) from the top of the page, i.e., it is 6 inches (15 cm) long instead of 10-1/4 inches (26 cm). This leaves space for the title and authors, which is typeset. Text should be justified. Also, with the final revision, include an IBM compatible diskette formatted either in WordPerfect 5.0+ (12 point Roman WP font) or Microsoft Word 6.0+ (12 point Times New Roman font).
HEADINGS: Major headings, such as ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, and REFERENCES, should be full capitals and centered (no bolding). Secondary headings, such as Adreneraic Receptors or Aqueous Humor Dynamics, should have the first letter of all major words capitalized, be underlined, and be flush with the left margin. Major and secondary headings should be separated from the text by two lines of space above and one line of space below.
ABSTRACT: The text of the Abstract is single-spaced and should be limited to 200 words. Allow three lines of space below the abstract before the next heading or the next text line.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: It should be clearly stated in the Materials and Methods section that the samples selected for the experiments were either randomized or pre-selected for certain purposes. Single- or double-masked treatment of experimental subjects should be indicated.
TABLES AND FIGURES: Tables and figures less than a page in size should be inserted into the text near the point of reference with a three-line space above and below. Tables should not be carried over to a second page. Margin limits are the same as text. Full-page figures and tables should follow the page on which referenced. Graphs and similar figures should be professionally drawn in black India ink (not blue). Glossy black and white photographs are acceptable; however, if you want a photograph published in color, you will need to check with the editorial office of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers for current per photo and per page charges. Legends for tables go above the table. Capitalize TABLE 1., etc. with Arabic numerals, centered on the page. The title should be set below TABLE 1., etc., with the first letter of major words capitalized. Legends for figures go below the figure. Capitalize FIGURE 1., etc., and center it with the title below. The title should have the first letter of major words capitalized.
FOOTNOTES: Footnotes should be typed single-spaced at the bottom of the appropriate page and separated from the text by a 3-inch line, starting from the left margin, with one space above and below it. Use footnotes only when essential.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Collaborations, sources of research funds, and other acknowledgments should be lined in a separate section at the end of the text ahead of the REFERENCES section.
REFERENCES: Cite references within the text with an Arabic number within parentheses [(1,2) or (3-7)]. List references by number in the order in which they appear in the text. Type single-spaced, separating one reference from another by one line of space. Use indentions as noted in examples below. Italicize titles of journals. For journal citations: (1) surname of all author(s), initials [Do not use et al.]; (2) title of paper with only first letter of first word capitalized, unless scientific name is being used; (3) journal (abbreviated, if possible, in accordance with Word List of Scientific Periodicals); (4) volume; (5) beginning and ending page numbers; (6) year. For book citations: (1) surname of author(s), initials; (2) title of book; (3) editor of book (if applicable); (4) edition of book (if applicable); (5) publisher; (6) city of publication; (7) year of publication; (8) page(s) reference (if applicable). When data from an unpublished source are given, supply complete information, e.g., researcher's name and location, within the text. If work is in press, put in the REFERENCES section in reference format and cite journal in which it is to be published, or the publisher.
PERMISSION TO REPRINT COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL: Written permission to use copyrighted material must be obtained from the publisher of the specific material (not the author or editor). The publication from which the figure, table, or text is taken must be listed in REFERENCES. Finally, the first footnote of a reprinted table, or the last sentence of the legend of a reprinted figure, should read "reprinted by permission from Ref. (00)," using appropriate reference number. All permissions must be listed.
REPRINTS: Because direct reproduction is used, the production time for this journal is short. When the editor has sent your manuscript to the publisher, you will receive a reprint order form which must be returned in FIVE DAYS to the publisher.
