About the journal

The Journal of Nutrition is published monthly and is the official publication of ASNS. Contents include peer-reviewed research papers covering all aspects of experimental nutrition; special articles such as critical reviews and biographies of prominent nutrition scientists; and commentaries on controversial issues in nutrition. The Journal of Nutrition is published online at: http://www.nutrition.org

The premier journal in its field, The Journal of Nutrition continues to have as its goal the publication of papers based on original nutrition research in humans and other animal species. In circulation since 1928, it is an official monthly publication of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences distributed to more than 4500 subscribers world-wide. The Journal publishes original research reported by authors in over 30 countries. To provide expert evaluation of the various segments of the broad spectrum of nutrition research, the editorial office is assisted by scientists who serve as Associate Editors, Regional Correspondents, Editorial Board Members, and ad-hoc reviewers chosen for their nutritional science expertise. They provide constructive evaluation and fair and rapid editorial processing. Reports of research on the following and other areas of nutrition are published:

  • Animal Nutrition
  • Carbohydrates and Fibers
  • Community and International Nutrition
  • Diet and Disease
  • Energy and Macronutrient Metabolism
  • Growth and Development
  • Human Nutrition
  • Lipids
  • Maternal and Infant Nutrition
  • Metabolism and Hormonal Regulation
  • Neuroscience and Nutrition
  • Nutrient-Gene Interactions
  • Nutrient Requirements
  • Nutrition and Immunology
  • Nutrition, Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • Nutritional Epidemiology
  • Proteins and Amino Acids
  • Public Health Nutrition and Policy
  • Vitamins and Minerals

The Journal also publishes critical reviews, issues and opinions, biographies, and supplements containing proceedings of symposia or special meetings. The frequency of citations to articles published in The Journal of Nutrition by scientists, clinicians, and others increases each year.

Instructions to Authors

GENERAL

Manuscripts for The Journal of Nutrition must be based on original, unpublished research and will be peer reviewed. Submission implies that the manuscript has not been posted on the Internet and that the data have not been published (other than in abstracts), are not under consideration by another journal, and will not be released before publication.

The Journal publishes receipt date, date of completion of the initial review, and date of acceptance of the revised manuscript for each research article. Manuscripts not revised and returned within 120 days will be treated as new submissions. The date of acceptance will be the date when all requested revisions have been returned to the editorial office.

TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

RESEARCH ARTICLES. Reports of original research of interest to the general community of nutritional scientists will be published as research articles. Studies of the biochemical and molecular actions of nutrients, nutrient-gene interactions, nutrient metabolism, nutrient requirements, nutrient interactions and toxicity, human nutrition and metabolism, community and international nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, nutritional neurosciences, nutrition and aging, and methodological developments will be considered.

REVIEWS. Most reviews published in The Journal of Nutrition will be part of a series entitled "Recent Advances in Nutritional Sciences" in response to invitations by the editor. These reviews will be published in a four-page format and will provide a recent rather than historical review of the subject matter. More comprehensive reviews and commentaries will be published as "critical reviews."

ISSUES AND OPINIONS. Short essays presenting scientific viewpoints on issues in nutrition and limited to three Journal pages may be submitted.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Comments on recently published Journal of Nutrition articles and other issues will be considered. Both the letter and the reply, including references, are limited to one Journal page and will be reviewed prior to acceptance.

BIOGRAPHIES AND HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES. These manuscripts are invited by the biographical or historical editors. Suggestions of subjects and authors are welcomed by the editor.

COMMENTARIES. Commentaries relative to concurrently published papers containing noteworthy findings will be published at the invitation of the editor.

OTHER. Extensive reports of research, monographs, compendia, proceedings of symposia, etc., will be reviewed and considered for publication in The Journal or as a separately bound supplement. Initial contact and arrangements to cover the cost of publication should be made with the American Society for Nutritional Sciences (ASNS) headquarters. For additional information, see "Guidelines for Supplement Sponsors and Guest Editors." or contact Director of Communications, ASNS, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814. Tel: 301-634-7050; Fax: 301-634-7892; email: jnutrition@asns.org

SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

Manuscript submissions to The Journal of Nutrition should be made using the online system at http://submit.nutrition.org. Users are required to register when accessing the system for the first time. Information on user registration and manuscript submission is provided below. Detailed instructions are also available online from the registration and submission areas of the manuscript submission program.

Registration The "Create a new account" link on the sign-in page leads to the registration area. You will be asked to complete three steps:

  1. Email/Password: Enter your email address. This is your unique user identification and will be needed to log into the system on all occasions. Enter a password. This will be encrypted for security reasons, and will not be known to The Journal of Nutrition editorial office or to Bench>Press/High Wire Press system devlopers. If you subsequently forget your password, you will need to click on the "I have forgotten my password" link on the sign-in page and follow the steps outlined. Choose a "password hint" question and provide an answer. You will need to provide this answer if you forget your password. Please note: a single password will be created which applies to all journals using the Bench>Press/High Wire Press online submission and tracking system. Once you have registered for your first journal, you do not need to re-register to use another journal's system. Simply log in with your existing email address and password.
  2. Verification: A verification number and URL will be emailed to you. You will need to visit the URL and enter the verification number to proceed to the next step. This helps ensure that your email address is not being used fraudulently.
  3. Profile: Once you have verified your email address you will be asked to provide a basic profile consisting of your contact information, and areas of expertise. Although you may use the same e-mail address and password to access any journal using the Bench>Press/High Wire Press system, you must create an individual profile with each journal.

Manuscript Submission: Before submitting your manuscript, please make sure your manuscript has been formatted according to instructions provided in the following sections of the Instructions for Authors: Submission Procedures, Section 3 (File Upload and Metadata) and Manuscript Preparation.

To submit a manuscript, enter the Author Area and click on the "Submit a new manuscript" hyperlink. You will be presented with a series of fields for entering your manuscript metadata and will then be asked to upload your manuscript file and image files. Supplemental data can also be uploaded. The system will automatically convert your files to a single pdf file for reviewing purposes. You will be asked to approve the conversion before it is formally submitted to The Journal. The conversion process can take up to 15 minutes. You will receive an email message when conversion of your manuscript is completed, and can then visit the "Ready for you to proof" queue in your Author Area to approve your submission. Check the pdf file carefully because conversion errors can occur. Your approval is required for the paper to enter the review process. During conversion the system will automatically hyperlink the references to Medline and/or the journal the article was published in if that journal is hosted on the web by HighWire Press. Please ensure you include the heading "Literature Cited" at the top of the citation page for optimum linkage.

You can start your submission and continue the process on another occasion. Clicking on "Save/Continue" at the bottom of the screen when entering your metadata enables you to save that page or continue to the next page. If you choose not to complete the submission on that occasion, the submission will appear in the "Submissions in progress" queue in the Author Area. If you decide not to complete the submission at all, please choose "Withdraw".

The following steps are involved in creating an electronic submission:

  1. Manuscript Metadata Entry. The following information is entered:
    a. Number of authors
    b. Category
    c. Manuscript title (special characters are available from a window)
    d. Running title; this also should be included on the title page of the manuscript.
    e. Keywords; these also should be included in the manuscript, after the abstract.
    f. Abstract: the abstract you enter here is for review purposes only and will be read by prospective reviewers. You will also need to include an abstract in the manuscript file you upload for conversion to pdf.
    g. Cover letter: please include any relevant information not specified elsewhere. The letter of submission should include a statement that the paper has been read and approved by all authors, information about previous or concurrent publication of any part of the work, and a statement of financial or other contractual agreements that may cause conflicts of interest. Please do not include this cover letter in your manuscript file.
    h. Color figures. Indicate: (1) whether color figures are included in the manuscript, (2) which figure(s) should be printed in color, and (3) agreement to pay color reproduction costs in the amount of $400 per figure.
    i. Suggested/excluded editors/reviewers
  2. Author Information. Enter names and email addresses for all authors. One author must be chosen as the corresponding author. Please check the corresponding author's email address carefully, because it will be used for all correspondence regarding the submission. If you are an author on the paper, indicate which entry is yours by checking the "This is me. Insert my information here" box and your required fields will be entered automatically. For other authors, click on the "Lookup" button to see if the author has a record in the system. If an author record exists, the required author information fields will be filled automatically.
  3. File Upload and Metadata. Enter the number of image and supplemental files; the number of manuscript files to upload is always set at 1.

Manuscript files: The system will convert your manuscript to a pdf file for the review process. The accepted format types for manuscript source files are Word and WordPerfect. Tables should be included in manuscript source files. Images, which are loaded as separate files, will be converted to PDF and appended to your manuscript. See "Manuscript Preparation" section of these Instructions for additional informaton on manuscript format.

Electronic file requirements: The manuscript submission system will accept Word or WordPerfect files; Times, Times Roman, Courier, Helvetica and Arial are the recommended fonts (WordPerfect Times New Roman is not an acceptable font). For best quality conversions of special characters and symbols, use the Symbol font. Papers should be double-spaced with numbered pages and numbered lines (lines numbered consecutively from the first line, first page to last line, last page). All word processing programs can add line numbers and page numbers automatically in document files.

Figure Files: Include figure titles in the legend and not on the figure itself. Figure titles and legends should be compiled on one or more pages in the manuscript text file. Separate panels of a figure should be labeled A,B,C, etc. Lettering on figures should be large enough to be legible after reduction to single-column width of 21 picas (about 3 1/2 inches or 9 cm). Letter type sizes after reduction should be 6-8 points.

Electronic file requirements: Electronic files should be prepared according to the specifications supplied by the printer at http://cjs.cadmus.com/da. The preferred image file formats are tiff and eps. It is acceptable to submit figures as PowerPoint files (.ppt), but the graphics contained within the PPT files must meet the printer's resolution requirements. Monochrome line art created in Excel may be supplied as pdf files. Line art that includes halftone images such autoradiography films, gels, DNA microarrays, gene cluster analyses, etc. must be supplied as high-resolution tiff or eps files. Acceptable resolutions are: 1200 dpi for monochrome images (black and white only); 300 dpi for black and white or color halftone images (pictures only); 600 dpi for combination halftone images (images containing pictures and text labeling and/or thin lines). Color requirements: all digital art submitted must be bitmap (Monochrome), grayscale, or CMYK.

    Please note the following:

    • Each figure must be in a separate file.
    • Figures cannot be embedded in text files.
    • Each figure file should be clearly identified by figure number and panel letter, if appropriate, in the space provided on the file upload screen.
    • If a figure is very small in the system-generated pdf file, the resolution of the figure file was not high enough. A higher resolution figure should be uploaded before the pdf is approved.

Authors are requested to create and keep high-resolution print copies of figures, in the event they are needed for publication purposes.

  4. Supplemental File Upload: Supplemental files for upload may include articles published/in press elsewhere, supplemental data, questionnaires, permissions, videos, etc.
  5. Manuscript File and Image File Upload: Enter the pathname of the file or use the browse button to select a file and have the pathname entered for you. Note: some browsers initially show only HTML files in the dialog box. If this is the case, look for the file type setting and change it to "All Files." Please provide descriptive labels for ALL files you upload. Image files must be labeled with the figure number and if appropriate, panel letter. Hardcopies of the figures may be required by the printer if the paper is accepted for publication and the figures files are not of sufficient resolution.
  6. Submission Approval: Your manuscript is not officially submitted until you approve the manuscript PDF file and the manuscript metadata. You have the option of either editing a section and then approving it, or approving it "as is." To view your converted manuscript, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer (available free at www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html).
