Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Number Theory will publish selected research papers representing the broad spectrum of interest of contemporary number theory and allied fields.

Submission of Manuscripts

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts in English, but other languages, such as French and German, are acceptable. In all cases, papers should be written in a clear, concise, and grammatical style, and two copies (the original plus one photocopy) should be submitted along with two sets of good-quality figures. Manuscripts may be submitted to any one of the Editors; the author should retain one copy of everything submitted.

Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Number Theory represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.

Copyright and Permissions

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Electronic Files

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper, including all artwork, with the final version of their manuscript either on disk or via ftp (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc). The electronic copy should match the hard copy exactly. The manuscript will be edited accordingly to the style of the journal, and the author must read the proofs carefully.

Manuscript Preparation

Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at http://www.authors.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation. If the article is written using Elsevier Science's document class 'elsart', or alternatively the standard document class 'article', proofs will be produced without rekeying the text. The Elsevier LaTeX package (which includes detailed instructions for LaTeX preparation) consists of the files elsart.cls (use this file if you are using LaTeX2e, the current version of LaTeX), elsart.sty and elsart13.sty (use these two files if you are using LaTeX3.09, the previous version of LaTeX), guidelines for users of elsart, a template file for quick start, and the instruction booklet "Preparing Articles with LaTeX."

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout on one side of 8.5 x 11-inch (21.3 x 27.5-cm) or A4 white paper. Number all pages consecutively and organize the paper as follows.

Title page (page 1). This page should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax number).

Abstract (page 2). The abstract must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching must be included.

References. A suggested style for references to the literature is citation by number in brackets in the text as [1], [1,2], [1, Theorem 1.5] and listing in alphabetical order at the end. Please note the following examples:

For unpublished lectures or symposia, include the title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and the date. For journal names, follow 'Abbreviations of Names of Serials reviewed in Mathematical Reviews' (American Mathematical Society, 1995). When in doubt about employing certain abbreviations, use clarity as a guide.

Footnotes. In text, footnotes should be avoided. If absolutely necessary, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals in order of their appearance and type them together on a separate page, double-spaced.

Tables. Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title directly above and essential footnotes below. Authors should submit complex tables as camera-ready copy.

Figures. Figures should be in a finished form suitable for publication. Number figures with Arabic numerals. Digital artwork of at least 300 dpi resolution is accepted in EPS or TIFF format. A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork. Type all legends consecutively on a separate sheet.

Color art is permissible, but the extra printing costs will be charged to the author. However, if together with your accepted article you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article.

Please note: Because of technical complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable black-and-white prints corresponding to all the color illustrations.

Equations. All equations should be typewritten and the numbers for displayed equations should be placed in parentheses at the right margin. References to equations should use the form 'Eq. (3)' or simply '(3).'

Preparation of Supplementary Material

Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer additional possibilities for publishing supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com). To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. Files can be stored on 3?-inch diskette, ZIP disk, or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh). For more detailed instructions, please visit our Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com, click on "Artwork instructions," and then click on "Multimedia files."

Proofs

Article proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the total cost of composition.
