About the journal

Aims and Scope:

The Journal of Neurogenetics publishes papers involving genetic and molecular neurobiology. This covers studies of genes and genetic variants in that influence neural development (pattern formation and cell differentiation) and function (physiology, neurochemistry, and behavior). We encourage submission of neurogenetic investigations performed on organisms ranging from microbes (such as bacteria and paramecia) to metazoans. The latter traditionally encompass nematodes, Drosophila, mouse, and humans, which have been particularly suited to genetic and molecular studies of the nervous system. But we also encourage submission of reports involving studies performed on any organism that permits the application of genetic variations or molecular-genetic materials to analysis of neurobiological phenomena--recognizing that these approaches are expanding to species, such as zebrafish, ranging beyond the more classical systems. In addition to original articles, short communications and reviews are welcome (see "Instructions for Authors"). We also publish groups of abstracts, especially (but limited to) those associated with neurogenetic conferences that occur on a regular basis.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal's website, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/gneg. Paper manuscript submissions are accepted only with prior agreement of the Editor-in-Chief.

Microsoft Word documents work best for online submission. All figures and tables should be submitted as separate files.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter stating that the work has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. The cover note may include suggestions of 3 to 4 persons whom the authors believe would be appropriate reviewers. For papers previously reviewed by other journals, the author may choose to submit the critiques along with a point-to-point response to indicate the revisions and the authors' resolution to each issue. This may expedite the review process, if deemed appropriate, by editorial decisions involving appropriate members of the Editorial Board. Once a paper is accepted for publication, Authors are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Formatting

Please follow closely the Journal format and style when preparing your submission. Manuscripts that fail to conform to the format of the Journal of Neurogenetics may be returned without review to avoid unnecessary delay in the ensuing publication process. All parts of the manuscript should be typed double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Use a 12-point, Times or Times New Roman font, and number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. The first page should contain:

Title, full author names, and affiliations for each;

A shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces;

Designation of corresponding author: name, complete postal address, phone & fax numbers, and e-mail address;

Acknowledgments as required.

Each submission must include an Abstract of 300 words or fewer, summarizing the article contents. Within this abstract avoid: duplication of the text, abbreviations, and references to the literature. Up to six Keywords should be provided at the end of the abstract; for this, authors are encouraged not to repeat words that are within the paper's title. A sample PDF file of a recent publication will be found on the Journal of Neurogenetics website: Sample Papers.

References

Please refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psycological Association (5th ed.) for all citation and reference instructions. Cite in the text alphabetically by author and date, for example: (Hay, 1985; Shimamura & Jurica, 1994). Reference examples are as follows:

Tables and Figures

A short descriptive title should appear above each table with any footnotes suitably identified below. Figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate files. Figure legends may be listed sequentially following the article reference section, and the figure number must be clearly indicated by the figure's file name. Please note that Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources.

Figures (including associated lettering) should be designed and submitted to fit in portrait format within the printable area of one column (8 x 23.5cm) or in landscape format of two columns (16.8 x 23.5cm) of the Journal. Whole page figures in landscape orientation (23.5 x 16.8cm) should be avoided if possible. Figures should be at least 300 dpi for color and 600 dpi for line drawings.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

300 dpi or higher,

Sized to fit on journal page,

EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only,

Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files.

Fees for Color

All color figures will be free for the online version. Authors may prefer to select colors for each figure such that they can still convey critical color-coded information upon conversion to black and white displays. Color illustrations will be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing. The author should first inquire the cost when planning printed color figures. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color if deemed unacceptable.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Informa Healthcare's CATS system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Please note that in the proof stage, only typographical errors, printer's errors and errors of scientific fact can be corrected. No substantial author's changes will be made.

Online Availability

Manuscripts that have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Neurogenetics will be made available online for purchase. However, the author may also select to publish through iOpenAccess, which, while being free of charge for public viewing, requires a fee from the authors.

Offprints/Reprints

The corresponding author of an article will receive a PDF of their article upon publication. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
