About the journal

Journal of Muscle Research and Cell Motility

The Journal of Muscle Research and Cell Motility has as its main aim the publication of original research which bears on either the excitation and contraction of muscle, the analysis of any one of the processes involved therein,or the processes underlying contractility and motility of animal and plant cells. The policy of the Journal is to encourage any form of practical study whatever its specialist interest, as long as it falls within this broad field. Theoretical essays are welcome provided that they are concise and suggest practical ways in which they may be tested. It is the policy of the journal that cells lines, hybridomas and DNA clones should be made available by the developers to any qualified investigator. Submission of a manuscript for publication constitutes an agreement of the authors to abide by this principle.
Full-length Reviews and short News and Views items will also be published;these will normally be commissioned, but may also be submitted to the Editors. Book Reviews, Abstracts from and reports of meetings and other items will be published at the discretion of the Editors. All publication will be in English, and it is the responsibility of contributors to ensure that their text is comprehensible.

The top copy of the manuscript (with illustrations for the printer‘s use) and two additional copies for the use of referees (both accompanied by a complete set of illustrations) are required. Please see under illustrations for relevant instructions. One complete copy of all papers will be retained by the editors. Original illustrations of accepted papers will not be returned unless specifically requested when returning proofs.

Kluwer Academic Publishers prefer the submission of manuscripts and figures in electronic form in addition to a hard copy printout. The preferred storage medium for your electronic manuscript is a 3.5 inch diskette. Please label your diskette properly, giving exact details of the name of the file(s), the operating system and software used. Always save your electronic manuscript in the word-processor format that you use. In general, use as few formatting codes as possible. For safety‘s sake, you should always retain a backup copy of your file(s). After acceptance, please make absolutely sure that you send the latest (i.e. revised) version of your manuscript, both as hard copy printout and on diskette (submission in electronic form of the final version of your article is compulsory).

Kluwer Academic Publishers prefer articles submitted in wordprocessing packages such as MS Word, WordPerfect, etc., running under operating systems MS DOS, Windows or Apple Macintosh, or in the file format LaTeX. Articles submitted in other software programs can also be accepted.

For submission in LaTeX, Kluwer Academic Publishers have developed special LaTeX style files, KLUWER.STY (LaTeX 2.09) and KLUWER.CLS (LaTeX 2E), which are used for all Kluwer journals, irrespective of the publication‘s size or layout. The specific journal formatting is done later during the production process. KLUWER.STY and KLUWER.CLS are offered by a number of servers around the world. Unfortunately, these copies are often unauthorised and authors are strongly advised not to use them. Kluwer Academic Publishers can only guarantee the integrity of style files obtained directly from them. Authors can obtain KLUWER.STY and KLUWER.CLS and the accompanying instruction file KAPINS.TEX from the following website: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/
Technical support on the usage of the style files is given via the e-mail address: texhelp@wkap.nl

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES

Authors should consider the ethical aspects of their work carefully.

Human experiments: All work must be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Papers describing experimental work on human subjects which carry a risk of harm must include (i) a statement that the experiments were conducted with the understanding and consent of each subject, and (ii) a statement that the responsible Ethical Committee has approved the experiments.

Animal experiments: Papers describing experiments on living animals should provide (i) a full description of any anaesthetic and surgical procedure used, and (ii) evidence that all possible steps were taken to avoid animals suffering at each stage of the experiment. In experiments involving the use of muscle relaxants, authors must describe the precautions taken to ensure adequate anaesthesia (e.g. see J. Physiol. (1990) vol. 420, pp. xii-xiii). Papers describing experiments on isolated tissues must indicate precisely how the donor tissue was obtained. Appropriate guidelines for the care and use of animals can be found in the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (National Institutes of Health Publications No. 80-23, revised 1978).

Declaration: Authors will be required to sign a declaration that the research has been conducted within the above guidelines and under the terms of all relevant local legislation.

In addition the Editors reserve the right to judge the appropriateness of the use and treatment of humans or animals in experiments for publication in the Journal.

Manuscript Presentation

The journal‘s language is English. British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed consistently throughout the article. Manuscripts should be printed or typewritten on A4 or US Letter bond paper, one side only, leaving adequate margins on all sides to allow reviewers?remarks. Please double-space all material, including notes and references. The text and references should be thoroughly checked for errors before submission. It is the responsibility of the Author to ensure that the typescript is correct in style, syntax and spelling. Generic and specific names and words which the authors wish to emphasize are set in italics and should be underlined. Text of secondary importance, normally including the section on Materials and methods, is set in a small type size. Avoid footnotes if possible.

Number the pages consecutively with the first page containing: running head (shortened title), title, author(s), affiliation(s), full address for correspondence, including telephone and fax number and e-mail address.

Summary. This should be clearly written, factual and comprehensible without reference to the text. The length of the summary should reflect the length of the text and should not exceed 300 words.

Materials and methods. In writing the methods section, authors are asked to avoid excessively detailed description of, or unnecessary literature citations of, widely used techniques. On the other hand, novel techniques should be described in full detail.

Figures and tables. Tables should be numbered and headed with short titles. They should be typed on separate pages and the preferred point of insertion indicated in the text margin.

In addition to hard copy printouts of figures, authors are requested to supply the electronic versions of figures in either Encapsulated PostScript or TIFF format. Many other formats, e.g. Microsoft Postscript, PICT (Macintosh) and WMF (Windows), cannot be used and the hard copy will be scanned instead.

Figures should be saved in separate files without their captions, which should be included with the text of the article. Files should be named according to DOS conventions, e.g. ‘figure1.eps? For vector graphics Encapsulated PostScript is the preferred format. Lines should not be thinner than 0.25 pts and infill patterns and screens should have a density of at least 10 per cent. For bitmap graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: black-and-white line figures - 1200 dpi; line figures with some grey or coloured lines - 600 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is.

If no electronic versions of figures are available, submit only high-quality artwork that can be reproduced as is, i.e. without any part having to be redrawn or re-typeset. The letter size of any text in the figures must be large enough to allow for reduction. Photographs should be in black-and-white on glossy paper. If a figure contains colour, make absolutely clear whether it should be printed in black-and-white or in colour. Figures that are to be printed in black-and-white should not be submitted in colour. Authors will be charged for reproducing figures in colour.

On the reverse side of each figure, the name of the (first) author and the figure number should be written in pencil; the top of the figure should be clearly indicated. Figures and tables should be placed at the end of the manuscript following the Reference section. Each figure and table should be accompanied by an explanatory legend. The figure legends should be grouped and placed on a separate page.

In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or the body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table.

Units, symbols and abbreviations. The SI system (Systeme Internationales de Units) should be used. For guidance on presentation of units the following publication is recommended: the Royal Society of Medicine booklet Units, Symbols and Abbreviations, 1971 (1 Wimpole Street, London W1M 8AE, UK). Abbreviations should only be used without explanation when they are in very common usage.

Section headings. First-, second-, third- and fourth-order headings should be clearly distinguishable but not numbered.

Appendices. Supplementary material should be collected in an Appendix and placed before the Notes and References sections.

Acknowledgements. Acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc., should be placed in a separate section before the References.

References. References to books, journal articles, articles in collections and conference or workshop proceedings, and technical reports should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order (see examples below).

References to books (monographs) should include the author‘s name; year of publication; title; page numbers where appropriate; publisher; place of publication, in the order given in the example below.

Hicks CR (1973) Fundamental Concepts in the Design of Experiments. Holt, Rinehard and Winston, New York.

References to articles in an edited collection should include the author‘s name; year of publication; article title; editor‘s name; title of collection; first and last page numbers; publisher; place of publication, in the order given in the example below.

Smith EL, Austen BM, Blumenthal, KM & Nyc JF (1975) Glutamate dehydrogenases. In: Boyer PD (ed.) The Enzymes. Vol. 11 (pp. 293-367). Academic Press, New York.

References to articles in periodicals should include the author‘s name; year of publication; article title; abbreviated title of periodical; volume number (issue number where appropriate); first and last page numbers, in the order given in the example below.

Scopes RK & Povath J (1990) Differential salt-promoted chromatography for protein purification. Bioseparation 1: 1-12.

Literature references should be listed alphabetically, typed double-spaced, and in the text referred to by author name and year of publication enclosed in brackets, e.g. (Smith, 1990).

Citations of personal communications and unpublished data should be avoided, unless necessary. Such citations should in text appear only as: (D. Wilman, pers. comm.), (C. S. Andrew, unpub.), and not in the reference list.

Abbreviate titles of periodicals according to the style of the Bibliographic Guide for Editors and Authors (Biosis, Chemical Abstract Service and Engineering Index, Inc, 1974).

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).

Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any changes to the PDF file. Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to: proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail. Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).

Offprints

50 offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints (both hard copies and PDF files) can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs. An order form for additional offprints will be sent to the corresponding author.

Page Charges and Colour Figures

No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions. Colour figures are published at the author‘s expense only.

Copyright

Authors will be asked, upon acceptance of an article, to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for a quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of figures, tables or poems from unpublished or copyrighted material.
