The Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health (JMWH) is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the publication of original research and review articles that focus on midwifery and women's health. JMWH provides a forum for interdisciplinary exchange across a broad range of women's health issues. Manuscripts that address midwifery, women's health, education, evidence-based practice, public health, policy, and research are welcomed.
Instructions to Authors
The Editorial Board of the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health (JMWH) welcomes manuscripts that address midwifery, primary care, public health and policy, and other topics relevant to women's health. A manuscript may be accepted for review with the understanding that it has been submitted exclusively to JMWH, that the content is not fraudulent, and that the material does not infringe or violate any copyright agreements or any other personal or proprietary rights.
SUBMISSION MATERIALS
Manuscripts Manuscripts must conform to the specifications of the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" established by the International committee of Medical Journal Editors. These guidelines can be found in the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health 2001, 47(1) and at http://www.icmje.org.
Authors should submit: (1) Cover letter designating the type of manuscript being submitted, (2) One complete set of all material (double-spaced) submitted for publication, (3) identical version of the manuscript on disk, (4) completed Author Checklist and (5) signed Author Agreement and Transfer of Copyright to:

If the checklist is not completed in full, the form and manuscript will be returned to the author for completion.
Figures and Tables Figures or tables from another source must be accompanied by written permission for their use from the copyright owner and the reference must be acknowledged in the legend for the figure or table. The back of each figure should be labelled with: the figure number in Arabic numbers (e.g., Figure 1), the author's name and an arrow designating the top margin of the figure. Legends for figures should be on a separate sheet and not on the figure itself.
Illustrations, Photographs or Art Photographs of identifiable persons must be accompanied by signed releases. Submit two camera-ready glossy photographs for each photo or art submission.
Electronic Submissions Electronic submissions are welcome but will not be accepted in lieu of the hard copy versions and the disk version. Acceptable formats for illustrations, photographs or art can be found at www.jmwh.org.
JMWH STYLE
Units of Measurement: Authors should express all measurements in conventional units with Systeme International (SI) units given in parentheses throughout the text.
Abbreviations JMWH has a standard list of abbreviations that are acceptable. A list of these abbreviations can be found in the JMWH Style Guide at http://www.jmwh.org. All other abbreviations are discouraged.
Drug names Generic names should be used in text with the brand name following in parentheses.
References References should be indicated in the text by superscript numbers and should be numbered in the order cited. Personal communications and unpublished data are not to be cited in the reference list, but may be mentioned in the text in parentheses. Journal titles should be abbreviated in the reference list according to Index Medicus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/libprog.html). The numbered list at the end of the article should conform to the following style: Journal (list up to six authors before using et al.): 1. Declercq ER, Williams DR, Koontz AM, Paine LL, Streit EL, McCloskey L. Serving women in need: nurse-midwifery practice in the United States, J Midwif Women's Health 2001;46:11-6.

TYPES OF ARTICLES
Feature Article Full-length manuscripts are typically between 2500 and 4000 words with no more than 50 references. Original articles of basic, clinical, or historical research should include objective, methodology, results, and conclusions. Reports of research involving human subjects must address informed consent and institutional review board approval. An original article may address, but is not limited to the following topics: clinical practice education; informatics/technology; health care administration/policy; legal, ethical, environmental, cultural, or international issues affecting women's health.
Current Commentary Controversial points of view cogently presented in the form of position papers or editorials may be submitted. This section provides a forum for authors to express varied points of view on issues, propose new ideas, and generate relevant debate. Text should be 2000 words or less with no more than 10 references.
Brief Reports A brief report consists of 1000-2500 words and no more than 25 relevant current or classic references. Brief reports may include, but are not limited to: short reports of original research, professional affairs updates, historical perspectives, instructional techniques, technologies, and programs of interest for midwifery educators.
Clinical Rounds A brief report of 1000-2000 words and maximum of 8 references. Include a description of a case that is unusual, educational, or highlights an area wherein the management is controversial followed by a brief review of the evidence for management or discussion of controversy.
Resources for Clinicians This section presents assessment tools, web or text resources, and evidence-based protocols that address a specific clinical or educational topic. Submissions should have a maximum of 1500 words.
Share With Women Health professionals may copy and distribute this page to share with clients. Limited to two typeset pages (front and back), the submitted materials should not exceed 800 words or 3-4 double-spaced typed pages.
Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor should be no longer than 400 words in length and must include a complete citation of the published work that generated the letter. All letters must be signed and include corresponding author's address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. A letter's submission will be viewed as de facto permission for its publication. Letter's should be submitted directly to jmwh@acnm.org as attachments to email. The Editorial Board reserves the right to select, edit, and condense letters for publication. If deemed appropriate, Editors may publish a response or author rebuttal to selected letters.
Media Reviews This section is designed to help readers stay abreast of current books and audio/visual resources that address topics in clinical practice, education, and research. Guidelines for submission of media reviews are available upon request (jmwh@acnm.org). Unsolicited reviews are welcomed and will be considered for publication if submitted according to Media Review Guidelines.
Back Page The Back Page is dedicated to expressions of art and science in midwifery. Submissions of art, poetry or thoughtful commentary are welcome.
Art Submissions The JMWH Art Committee invites submissions relevant to midwifery and women's health as delineated below. Artwork that is accepted will be placed at the discretion of the Editorial Board. All submitted materials will be retained by JMWH and cannot be returned. Submitter's contact information must be included. Detailed requirements for pictures and illustrations can be found at www.jmwh.org.
