Instructions to Authors
General Instructions
1. (Editorial Policy) The Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology is devoted to the advancement and dissemination of scientific knowledge concerning microbiology, biotechnology, and related academic disciplines. It is an international English joumal published by the Korean Society for Applied Microbiology (KSAM) and distributed by Springer-Verlag worldwide, and covers all the scientific and technological aspects of microbiology in general, physiology and metabolism, environmental microbiology, molecular microbiology, enzymology and enzyme engineering, fermentation technology, plant and animal cell cultures, bioprocess engineering, and other related fields.
2. (Manuscripts) The manuscripts submitted for publication must be previously unpublished research works written in English, which are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
3. (Types of Papers) The papers are classified into three categories. Articles : Articles cover full reports of research work that must be written following the guidelines described below (Form of Manuscripts) with the minimum length that requires for precise description and clear interpretation of theoretical or experimental work.
Notes : Notes may be short research reports which contain material of unusual interest, but which are insufficient to fill the requirements of a full-length article. Notes must not exceed three printed pages (eight double-spaced, typewritten pages) including the figure(s) and table(s). Each note must have a short abstract of no more than 50 words. Do not use section heading in the body of the Note; introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion should be in a single section. The references section is identical to that of articles.
Reviews : Reviews and monographs dealing with all aspects of microbiology and biotechnology wiD be accepted, but subject to the approval of the Editor-in-Chief. Authoritative and critical reviews of the current state of knowledge are preferred. There is no prescribed layout for reviews, but the tables, and manner of citations should conform to the guidelines (Form of Manuscripts) for articles. Unsolicited reviews will normally only be accepted under special circumstances.
4. (Authorship) Membership in The Korean Society for Applied Microbiology not a prerequisite for submission and consideration of manuscripts.
5. (Submission of Manuscripts) Four copies of each manuscript with table(s) and figure(s) along with one copy of original line drawings or photographs should be submitted to:

Electronic submission of the manuscript on diskette or by E-mail should be done after the manuscript is accepted for publication.
6. (Editorial Review and Revision) All papers will be critically read by at least two reviewers who are selected for their competence in the subject matter of the paper. In addition to meeting the Society's critical reading requirement, all manuscripts will be edited by native English speakers. Acceptance of the paper will depend upon its scientific merit and suitability for the journal. A paper may be accepted in its original form or accepted subject to revision. The reviewers' (amd editor's) suggestions will be conveyed to the author without identifying the reviewers and the author will have an opportunity for revision. If a manuscript returned to an author for revision is held longer than two months, or if revision is sufficiently extensive, the date of the receipt of the revised manuscript will be substituted for the initial date of receipt.
7. (Proofs) Galley proofs for an accepted article will be sent to the corresponding author for correction. These should be returned to the Editor-in-Chief within a week. The content of an article could not be changed during galley proof reading.
8. (Copyright) To maintain and protect the Society's ownership and rights and to protect the original authors from misappropriations of their published work, The Korean Society for Apphed Microbiology requires author(s) to sign a copyright transfer agreement. This agreement is sent to the submitting authors when a manuscript is accepted for publication. Unless this agreement is executed, KSAM will not publish the manuscript.
9. (Page Charges) Page charge is £Ü30,000 per each printed page, for both active in-country and overseas members. A bill for page charges will be sent with the page proofs, along with reprint order form and copyright transfer agreement form. Manuscripts processed by International Editorial Board members and International Editors are exempt from any page charge.
10. (Improper Manuscripts) The following types of manuscripts are not suitable for editorial review or publication, and will be returned to the author.
a. Manuscripts that do not follow the Form of Manuscripts b. Manuscripts with unclear photographs and figures 11. (Reprints) Fifty copies of reprints of an article will be sent to corresponding author free of charge. The author is responsible for reprint charge over fifty copies.
Form of Manuscripts
12. (Typescripts) Each paper must be submitted in three typewritten or word-processed copies, including the original, with wide margins amd double-spacing throughout, including footnotes, legends, amd references. Good quality, full-weight paper, approximately 210¡¿297 mm (A4) should be used. Good quality photocopies are acceptable. Typescripts should bear the name, postal and E-mail addresses of the corresponding author to whom the revision or proofs of the paper is to be sent.
13. (The Form of a Character) The words such as strain and journal names which are to be printed in italic type should be underlined as (¡ª); however, bold type words, such as volume of journal in references, should be underlined as (¡).
14. (Size) The average size of articles is around six printed pages including tables and figures (typescripts: 65 letters ¡¿ 25 lines, 14 pages). A note is around three pages, and there is no size limitation for reviews.
15. (Style) The authors should present their material with utmost conciseness under adequately classified headings such as the following: Abstract; Introduction, Materials and Methods; Results and Discussion; Acknowledgment; Nomenclature, and References. These headings should be preceded by the title of the article, the author name(s), institution(s), corresponding author, several key words, telephone and Fax number, E-mail address, and a brief running title. All tables and figures are to be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. Their approximate positions should be indicated in the appropriate margin of the typescript.
Title : Each manuscript should present results of independent, cohesive study; thus numbered series titles are not allowed. Avoid the main title/subtitle arrangement, complete sentence constructions, and unnecessary use of articles. In addition to title, name of each author, address(es) of the institution(s) at which the work was performed and each author's affiliation should be listed. The affiliation address in each case should be indicated by superscript. Footnotes : Place an asterisk after the name of the corresponding author to whom inquiries regarding the paper should be directed. A list of key words should also be included on the titde page. A running title (not to exceed 54 characters and spaces) should also be included as a footnote to the main tide. It will be considered during compilation of the subject index. Abstract : Should not ordinarily exceed 5 percent of the length of the paper, and an abstract should not repeat information already present in the title. It should be suitable for direct inclusion in Current Contents, Chemical Abstracts, and Biological Abstracts, etc. Notes must also be submitted with an abstract. References : The references section must include all relevant published works, and all listed references must be cited in the text. Arrange the references section in alphabetical order, by the first author, and number the entries consecutively. Abbreviate journal names according to Serial Sources for the BIOSIS Data Base (BioSciences Information Service, 1987). Cite each listed reference in the text by number in brackets. Follow the styles shown in the example below:
1. Brock, T. D. amd M. T. Madigan. 1988. Biology of Microorganisms, pp. 42-59. 5th ed. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. 2. Lee, Y. H. and J. S. Park. 1989. Evaluation of operational conditions and power consumption of bioattritor for enzymatic saccharification of uncooked starch. Kor. J. Appl. Microbiol. Biotechnol. 17: 349-357. 3. Rogers, P. L., K J. Lee, M. L. Skotnicki, and D. E. Tribe. 1982. Ethanol production by Zymomonas mobilis, pp. 37-84. In A. Fiechter (ed.), Advances in Biochemical Engineering, vol. 23. Springer-Verlag, Berlin. References to papers accepted for publication but not yet published should show the journal name and, if known, the probable year of publication, and state "in press". The following types of references are not valid for listing: unpublished data, personal communication, manuscripts in preparation or submitted, pamphlets, abstracts, patents, newsletters, and material that has not been subjected to peer review. References to such sources should be made parenthetically in the text as (Y.H. Lee et al. 1989. Abstr. Annu. Meet. Kor. Soc. Appl. Microbiol., Seoul, Korea, p. 159).
16. (Tables and Figures) Tables should be typewritten separately from the text, double spaced, and each table should include a title. Vertical rulings in tables are unacceptable. Figures should ordinarily be original drawings. However, glossy photographs of line-drawing are usually satisfactory. In each original line-drawing, letters or numbers should be left blank because they will be typed in during printing. Letters or numbers should be included in the figures contained in a submitted manuscript along with caption for figures.
17. (Nomenclatures, Units, Abbreviations, and Symbols) Nomenclatures for chemicals and biochemicals, microorganisms, and genes should follow the guidelines in the instructions to authors of journals published by American Society for Microbiology. SI units (System International d'Unites) should be used whenever possible. Abbreviations should be used for those recommended by IUPACIUB (Biochemical Nomenclature and Related Documents, 1978).
