All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. They should be submitted in triplicate (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original), typewritten on one side of letter (quarto) paper only and double-spaced with at least 25 mm (1") margins. All pages must be numbered in sequence beginning with the title page. Please include a diskette.

Arrangement

Title Page
The title page should contain the complete article title, names and affiliations of all authors, institution(s) at which the work was performed with city, state, or country, acknowledgments of funding, name, address, telephone number, fax number for all correspondence, a running head of not more than 48 characters, and the total number of text figures and tables.

Key Words
Key words are needed for indexing purposes; a list of 3-10 words not used in the title should be provided.

Abstract
An abstract of no more than 150 words should summarize in general terms but not in detail the major findings and conclusions. The abstract serves in lieu of a concluding summary and should be intelligible without reference to the rest of the paper.

Text
Text should follow the format: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, and Acknowledgments. Acknowledgments must be terse. Editorial, secretarial, or clerical help cannot be listed in acknowledgments. Accreditation by professional organizations should not be listed, nor should adherence to animal welfare laws be stated. It is assumed that all authors and institutions are in compliance with ethical standards and their national laws and regulations. Subheadings and paragraph titles should be used whenever possible. All abbreviations must be defined at first mention. Proprietary drug names must be followed by the name and address (town and state) of the firm in brackets. American measuring units must be accompanied by metric translation. All numbers under ten have to be spelled out except when used in comparisons with another, higher number, e.g., 8 of 12, but three of eight. Use only numbers as superscripts in tables; do not use symbols such as asterisks, daggers, or letters. Do not use the symbol "#" for number; use only the word "number", "No.", or "N". The terms in vivo, in vitro, in situ, etc. must be in italics. All species names must be in italics.

Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided. If essential, they should appear at the bottom of the respective page and must be numbered consecutively.

References
References should include only those publications cited in the text. They must be arranged alphabetically and then numbered consecutively. In text, reference numbers only must be placed in brackets, citations by name and year are not acceptable. All references must follow the Index Medicus style, citing in sequence the author's surname(s), or initial(s), title of the article, abbreviated journal name, volume number inclusive of page, and year of publication.

Examples
a) Journal
Glosser JW: Responsibility of the regulator to the regulated community. J Med Primatol 19:1-8, 1990.
b) Chapter in a book or proceedings
Muchmore E: Hepatitis surveillance standards for hepatitis studies in a chimpanzee colony. In: The Standardization of Animals to Improve Biomedical Research, Production and Control. XVIth IABS Congress. Kalter & Hennessen (eds). Karger: Basel 13-21, 1980.
c) Book
Socha WW, Ruffi?J: Blood Groups of Primates: Theory, Practice, Evolutionary Meaning. New York: Alan R. Liss, Inc., 1983.

Tables, Figures, and Illustrations
These must be prepared on a separate page, be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals, have a title, and be keyed into the text. Illustrations may be mounted or unmounted. Good quality glossy black and white photographs 5" x 7" (12.5 x 18 cm) or 8" x 10" (20.5 x 25.5 cm) are preferred. A charge will be made for color (see below). All graphics and lettering must meet professional standards and be legible after reduction in size. Illustrations must be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals and keyed into the text. Name of author, figure number, reduction requested, and an arrow indicating the orientation should be typed on a gummed label and affixed to the back of each illustration. Place a piece of clear tape over the label to prevent ink from damaging the illustrations. Do not write directly on the back of the photo. If no reduction is desired, an illustration or group of illustrations should not exceed 6-3/4" (approximately 17.1 cm) wide by 8-3/4" (approximately 22.2 cm) long.

Copyright
All submitted manuscripts must be accompanied with a completed copyright assignment form. Authors submitting a paper must do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. Any material reproduced or adapted from any other published or unpublished source must be duly acknowledged. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce copyrighted material. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of the publisher. The journal will not be responsible for the loss of manuscripts at any time. All statements in, or omissions from, published manuscripts are the responsibility of the author, who will assist the editor and publisher by reviewing proofs before publication.

Alterations made in page proofs, other than the correction of printers' errors, should be avoided and will be charged to the author.

Reprint order forms will be sent with the proofs. It is important to order, initially, a sufficient quantity of reprints since the cost is substantially higher if ordered after publication.
