About the journal
The Journal of Glaciology is a publication of the International Glaciological Society. All rights reserved. Instructions to Authors
Instructions to authors for Journal of Glaciology We publish 4 types of paper: • papers on new glaciological findings and theories • papers on new instruments and methods • correspondence of a topical nature, or comments on papers previously published in the Journal • short book reviews Papers submitted should be: • Of high scientific quality • Complete and clear • Substantially different from previously published work Length Papers should be concise. Papers more than 12 Journal pages in length should be cleared with the Chief Editor before submission (1 Journal page = about 1000 words). Letters are usually limited to two Journal pages. Original submission Submit online at http://jog.msubmit.net/cgi-bin/main.plex. If you have not submitted in this way before, you will need to register as a new author. Contact journal@igsoc.org if you have problems with this system. Review process The Scientific Editor will discuss any alterations required to the paper. The Chief Editor will accept a paper for publication and send the final version to the IGS. You will provide the IGS with electronic versions of the final text and figures. You will be sent a proof of your text and illustrations to check and correct (you will have to pay for any substantial alterations made at this stage). Final submission The final accepted version of the paper should be in electronic format. • Acceptable formats are o Text (including tables and figure captions) – Word or LaTeX (the IGS class file can be downloaded from the website) o Figures – eps, ai (illustrator), ps, tif, psd NOT jpeg • File names should reflect the number of paper, e.g. 04J015.doc • Send o via email to journal@igsoc.org, or o on CD via mail to the IGS (see address above), or o via the IGS ftp site (please contact igsoc@igsoc.org for details) • Indicate contact details of corresponding author • Responsibility for the accuracy of all data rests with the authors General points • Title should be concise • Please do NOT use Hypertext • Abstract should be less than 200 words • Papers should be divided into unnumbered sections with short section headings • Use SI units • Use internationally recognized systems of abbreviation • Illustrations should o be 1 or 2 column widths: up to 85 mm or up to 178 mm o not be in boxes o use strong black lines (avoid tinting if possible) o use SI units in labels o use Optima, Ariel or a similar sans serif font in labels • Equations should o be set in MathType or advanced equation editor if using Word o NOT be embedded in the text or submitted as illustrations. If you are using MathType or equation editor, please do not click on Export Equations • Tables should be o numbered in Arabic o referred to in text (as ‘Table 1’ etc.) • All citations in text should include the author name(s) and the year of publication (e.g. ‘Smith, 1999’; ‘Smith and Jones, 2000’; ‘Smith and others, 2003’) and must have an entry in the reference list • References list should o be short o be complete and accurate o be arranged in alphabetical order by first author’s surname o include too much rather than too little information o include works accepted but not published as ‘in press’ o not include personal communications, unpublished data or manuscript in preparation or submitted for publication, data published on the web (these should be included in the text) • Examples of reference format: Bentley, C.R. 1971. Page charges The Society requests that authors provide financial support for their papers in the form of page charges at the following rates: • £90 per page for papers with no colour illustrations • £150 per page for papers with colour illustrations. Even if authors require just one colour illustration, they must pay colour page charges on ALL PAGES of their paper. Colour pages cannot be published unless the author agrees to pay full colour page charges for the entire paper. Offprints All authors can request an electronic (pdf) offprint of their paper via email. Authors who have paid full page charges can also request up to 100 free printed offprints. Additional offprints can be purchased at the rates shown on the order form.
