About the journal
|
Written for physicians, clinicians, psychologists and researchers, each bimonthly issue of the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics is devoted entirely to the developmental and psychosocial aspects of pediatric health care. Each issue brims with original articles, case reports, challenging cases and reviews - the latest work of many of today`s best known leaders in related fields - that help you stay current with the latest information in the field. Relevant areas covered include learning disorders, developmental disabilities, and emotional, behavioral, and psychosomatic problems.
This internet mailing list offers physicians, psychologists, and other health care professionals a forum for peer-level discussion of cases and other matters directly related to the research, teaching, advocacy, and practice of developmental and behavioral pediatrics. This list is sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and hosted by USF Pediatrics. Regular features of this list include discussion of the challenging cases presented bimonthly in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics and the availability of Continuing Medical Education credits through the University of Florida.

Please indicate eligibility in the transmittal letter.

MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
All copy (including tables and references) must be typed double-spaced on white paper, 22 x 28 cm (8?x 11 inches), with all four margins at least 3?cm (1?inches). Each page should be numbered in the upper right-hand margin. The name of the first author should appear at the top of each page. Begin each of the following sections on a new page, in this order: title page, abstract, text, references, tables, figure legends, photocopies of figures.
Title Page. The first page of the paper should include the full title (a brief but descriptive statement of content), a running head of not more than 56 characters (including spaces), and two to five key words for indexing purposes. Indicate clearly each author's name, degree(s), and institutional affiliation. Affiliations should include division, department, institution, city, and state. Do not include academic (e.g., Associate Professor) or administrative (e.g., Head, Division of Behavioral Pediatrics) titles. Provide a complete address for reprint requests.
Abstract. Each paper must include an abstract of 100-150 words, written in full, informative sentences. The abstract should summarize the problem, method of study, results, and conclusions. Define all abbreviations.
Text. The body of the paper should be organized under appropriate headings (e.g., Methods, Results, Discussion), and should not exceed 20 double-spaced typewritten pages. When multiple levels of headings are needed, clarify the paper's structure by using the appropriate heading styles. Primary headings should be centered and typed in capital letters. Secondary subheadings should be typed flush left in capital and lowercase letters. Tertiary subheadings are typed in underlined capital and lowercase letters, indented, followed by a period and run into the text. Define all abbreviations (except those for metric units) the first time they are used in each major section of the text. Avoid idiosyncratic abbreviations, and do not use periods in abbreviations. All measurements should be in metric units.
References. References are cited in text by superscript arabic numbers corresponding to their order of appearance and are listed in the same order. Do not list references alphabetically. Only references cited in the text should be included in the list. Double space within as well as between references. Abbreviations of journals should conform to Index Medicus. The following reference style must be used:
- Smith BL, Jones MA, Shaw LB, et al. Understanding the child from birth to adolescence: a review. J Dev Behav Pediatr 1993;307:851-856.
- Abel LB. Understanding the Child. Baltimore, MD: Williams & Wilkins; 1993.
- Smith BL. Understanding the child. In: Jones MA, ed. The Problem Child. Vol 2, ch 7. 3rd ed. Baltimore, MD: Williams & Wilkins; 1993:50-55.
- Smith BL. Understanding the child. Paper presented at: 132nd Annual Meeting of the Society for Child Development; February 22-24, 1993; New Orleans, LA.
Unpublished data, personal communications, and material submitted, but not yet accepted, can be cited parenthetically in text, but should not be included in the reference list.
Tables. Tables should be comprehensible to the reader without reference to the text. Type each table (double-spaced throughout) on a separate sheet with an arabic table number, corresponding to order of citation in text, and a brief title at the top. Define all abbreviations. Designate footnotes by superscript lowercase letters. Refer to each table in the text.
Figures. Figures should be comprehensible to the reader without reference to the text. Do not submit original artwork. Submit two high-contrast glossy photographic prints for each figure. Also, attach a photocopy of each figure to each manuscript copy. Prints should measure 12.5 x 18 cm (5 x 7 inches). Indicate arabic figure number and first author, as well as "top," lightly in pencil on the reverse of each print. Define all abbreviations in each legend. Legends for all figures should be typed in numerical order on separate sheets and should not be included on photographic prints. Refer to each figure in the text. A letter of release (consent) from both parents or from the patient involved must accompany photographs in which recognition is possible.
COMPUTER DISKETTES
Authors should submit their manuscript in electronic format as well as on paper. Send the FINAL version of your manuscript on disk along with a hard copy printout. Disks produced on PC-compatible or Macintosh computers are preferred, but those produced on Wang or UNIX operating systems can also be used. Files from nearly all word processing programs can be used. Files in ASCII can also be used but are not preferred. Authors using TE[chi] should use LaTE[chi] only. Author-defined macros are unacceptable. Authors preparing disks on Macintosh computers should not use the Fast Save option. Symbols and special characters should not be created graphically; instead, use the character set provided in your word processor. Each article should be on a separate virus-free disk, and only the article should be on the disk. Please put the manuscript (text, references, and figure legends) in one file. Identify the disk by providing journal name, first author's name, name of computer file, type of hardware (e.g., Macintosh or PC), operating system and version (e.g., Windows 95), and software program and version used (e.g., Word 97). The Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics does not assume responsibility for errors in conversion of customized software, newly released software, characters generated in an equation editor, or special characters. Tabular material will be processed in the traditional manner.
STATISTICAL GUIDELINES
When presenting grouped data in text, tables, or figures, include measures of dispersion (e.g., standard deviations or standard errors of means), as well as measures of central tendency (e.g., means, medians), except for those nominal data for which these measures are not applicable. When nominal data are presented, include percentages as well as frequency values. Statistical tests used should be explicitly identified, with a reference cited for relatively unfamiliar procedures. For more complex techniques, such as multivariate analyses, include a brief explanation of the logic and structure of the procedure. (Your description and discussion of results should relate to this explanation.)
REVIEW AND PUBLICATION PROCEDURES
Receipt of all manuscripts will be acknowledged, and a manuscript number will be assigned. Refer to the manuscript number in all subsequent correspondence. All manuscripts will be evaluated by two or three reviewers. Papers accepted for publication are subject to copy editing; the correspondent will be provided with galley proofs and the edited manuscript for approval. The author is responsible for all material in the paper, including copy-editing changes, accuracy of reference citations, and numerical values.
