About the journal
|
The Journal of Computational Neuroscience provides a forum for papers that fit the interface between computational and experimental work in the neurosciences. The Journal of Computational Neuroscience publishes full length original papers describing theoretical and experimental work relevant to computations in the brain and nervous system. Papers that combine theoretical and experimental work are especially encouraged. Primarily, theoretical papers should deal with issues of obvious relevance to biological nervous systems. Experimental papers should have implications for the computational function of the nervous system, and may report results using any of a variety of approaches including anatomy, electrophysiology, biophysics, imaging, and molecular biology. Papers that report novel technologies of interest to researchers in computational neuroscience are also welcomed. It is anticipated that all levels of analysis from cognitive to cellular will be represented in the Journal of Computational Neuroscience. |

Manuscript Style
Manuscripts must be written in English. All units of measurement should be metric.
Title Page
The title page should include the title and author(s) of the paper, with complete mailing addresses and institutional affiliations. Papers submitted by more than one author should indicate the author to whom correspondence should be addressed, and should include the telephone number, FAX number, and e-mail address of this person. Please be sure to include your e-mail address on your paper. If your paper is accepted, we will be forwarding you your page proofs via e-mail. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Abstract
A short abstract (approximately 100-150 words) that outlines the approach taken and the salient findings of the paper should be provided.
Keywords
Enclose with each manuscript from three to five keywords.
Body of Manuscript
The manuscript should be divided into sections, and provided in the following order:
Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, Figure Legends, Tables, Figures, Appendices (if used). Appendices may be appropriate for mathematical details that interrupt the flow of the paper.
References
The list of references should be in alphabetical order by author, and include the full title of the paper, starting and ending page numbers, and be in the following formats:
- Periodicals
Abbott LF, Hooper SL, Marder E (1991) Oscillating networks: Control of burst duration by electrically coupled neurons. Neural Computation 3: 487-497.
- Books
Marder E, Weimann JM, Kepler TB, Abbott LF (1992) Computational implications of serotonin-sensitive region of axonal membrane on a dual function motor neuron. In: FH Eeckman, ed. Neural Systems: Analysis and Modeling. Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, MA. pp. 377-390.
- Abstracts
Same as Periodicals with "(Abstract)" following the title of article or book.
Citations in the text should be as: "One of the most important papers in computational neuroscience is that of Hodgkin and Huxley (1952). This paper (Hodgkin and Huxley, 1952) clearly established ..." et al. should be used in text citations but not in the list of references for papers with three or more authors.
Abbreviations
Standard abbreviations should be used whenever possible. Nonstandard abbreviations must be defined when first used.
Figures
The Journal of Computational Neuroscience is committed to maintaining high quality reproduction of figures to ensure that excellent anatomical and physiological data can be reproduced with fidelity. Authors should plan figures assuming that most figures will be printed as single columns in a two-column format. The column width is 76 mm (3 inches). Figures should be designed to either fit in 1 column or to use the entire printable width of the page, 161 mm (6-1/4 inches). Full page figures can be 211 mm (8-1/4 inches) high. Authors should indicate when figures require larger than one column format.
Authors will be charged for color figures. Some funds are available to partially subsidize the cost of some color. After the acceptance of the manuscript, authors should inquire about the possibility of color subsidy, if a color figure is necessary for the paper.
Figure Legends
Each figure should have a legend that adequately describes the figure. Identify all abbreviations used in a figure at the end of each legend, if the abbreviation has not been used in the text. Note: Mathematical expressions should be typed exactly as they should appear in print.
Page Charges
There will be no page charges.
Authorship
Each author is presumed to have played an important scientific role in the work described. In the letter of submission the corresponding author should indicate that all authors on the paper have seen and agreed to the final version of the manuscript.
Policy on Animal Treatment and Human Subjects
All animal and human studies must be carried out in accordance with the regulations promulgated by the National Institutes of Health and used by the Society for Neuroscience and the American Physiological Society in their society publications Journal of Neuroscience and Journal of Neurophysiology.
Policy on Software Availability
It is expected that all software reported in Journal of Computational Neuroscience be readily available to the general scientific community, either via ftp or another method acceptable to the Managing Editors.
Review Process
After the manuscript is received in the Journals Editorial Office, it will be assigned to an Action Editor, normally within 2 days of receipt. The Action Editor will be responsible for conducting the review process, will select reviewers, and will normally make the decisions regarding acceptance and rejection. Action Editors will consult with other Action Editors and/or Managing Editors to resolve any conflicts that might arise in the review process. The speed of publication is a priority, and the Action Editors and the Journals Office will aim to provide the reviewers reports as soon as possible after submission. Accepted manuscripts will be published in the next available issue. The intent is that manuscripts will routinely be published 4-6 months after acceptance.
Proofing
Page proofs for articles to be included in the journal will be sent to the contact author for proofing, unless otherwise informed. The proofread copy should be returned to the Publisher within 72 hours.
Copyright
It is the policy of Kluwer Academic Publishers to own the copyright of all contributions it publishes. To comply with U.S. Copyright Law, authors are required to sign a copyright transfer form before publication. Authors must submit a signed copy of this form with their manuscript.
Style Manuals
The following two books are recommended as guides in writing scientific papers; they are particularly useful in providing standard abbreviations for measurements and other scientific terms:
- CBE Style Manual (5th Ed). Council of Biology Editors, Bethesda, MD, 1983.
- Writing Scientific Papers in English: O‘Connor M, Woodford FP (eds). Elsevier, Amsterdam/Oxford/New York, 1976.
The following book is an extremely valuable general, non-scientific style manual:
- The Elements of Style: Strunk W Jr., White EB. Macmillan, New York, 1972.
Offprints
First-named authors will be entitled to 50 free offprints of their paper. Ordering information for additional offprints will accompany proofs.
Instructions for Authors Electronic Materials
The Journal will consider electronic files for posting online. Electronic materials must accompany an article for consideration for publication in the Journal of Computational Neuroscience and must, in the opinion of the editor and referees, be relevant to and add valuable information to the article. These types of files may be, but are not limited to, video files, audio files, code, text files, and high resolution images. Before acceptance, all supplemental material must be submitted in final and machine-valuable condition.
Authors wishing to submit additional electronic material should include in their cover letter a brief description of the material to be submitted including the number of files, type of files, and approximate size, as well as, a reason for including them. References to the supplemental material should be cited at the appropriate locations in the manuscript or figure captions. Supplemental material must also be available directly from one of the paper‘s authors and be freely provided.
Please accompany the electronic materials with a text of up to 100 words length which references the journal article. All files will be accessible both to subscribers and non-subscribers, (SITE ADDRESS TO COME), and there is no charge for posting of the electronic files on the website.
