Formatting guidelines
[Back to Guidelines for Bench>Press]
Authors must conform to the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (JAMA 1997;277927-34). Brief details follow:
(1) Submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original work not being offered elsewhere or published previously. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Vancouver style. The Editors retain the right to shorten the article or make changes to conform with style and to improve clarity. All authors of accepted papers are asked to grant Journal of Clinical Pathology / Molecular Pathology an exclusive licence to publish the article in all media.
(2) Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, or pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Patient data should never be altered or falsified in an attempt to attain anonymity. Informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. Masking the eyes in photographs is inadequate protection of anonymity (for a full statement see BMJ 1995;311:1272).
(3) Authors should include the names, addresses, and email addresses of four experts whom the authors consider suitable to peer review their work.
(4) When submitting original manuscripts, if the authors have any previous papers on a similar subject, they should notify the Editors in the covering letter, including full citations. This is to assure the Editors that there is no risk of duplicate publication
(5) If requested, authors should produce the data upon which the manuscript is based for examination by the Editor.
(6) The number of authors should be kept to a minimum and should include only those who have made a contribution to the research: justification should be made for more than five authors. Acknowledgements should be limited to workers whose courtesy or assistance has extended beyond their paid work, and to supporting organisations.
(7) Please inform us of any grant, business interest, or consultancy that could lead to a conflict of interest.
(8) Authors should provide up to 5 keywords/phrases for the index.
(9) All measurements must be in SI units apart from blood pressure measurements, which should be in mmHg, and drugs in metric units.
(10) Abbreviations should be used rarely and should be preceded by the words in full before the first appearance.
(11) In the statistical analysis of data 95% confidence intervals should be used where appropriate.
(12) Randomised controlled trials should be reported in the format suggested by the Revised CONSORT statement published in JAMA (2001;285:1987-91).
(13) Consent: All trials involving patients or human volunteers must have ethics committee approval, which must be explicitly stated in the paper. Volunteers must have given written informed consent. All case reports must have the consent of the patient for publication. When reporting on deceased patients make certain that they cannot be identified.
(14) Animal studies will be considered when the clinical implications are significant.
(15) No free offprints will be provided, reprints may be ordered when the proof is returned.
Original articles Papers should be no more than 2000 words long and should report original research of relevance to the understanding and practice of clinical pathology. They should be written in the standard form: abstract; introduction; methods; and discussion.
The journal uses a structured form of abstract in the interests of clarity. This should be short (no more than 250 words) and include four headings: Aims - the main purpose of the study; Methods - what was done, and with what material; Results - the most important results illustrated by numerical data but not p values; and Conclusions - the implications and relevance of the results.
Leaders/Editorials Leaders and Editorials are published by editorial invitation. Unsolicited reviews or commentaries are unlikely to be accepted but the editor is always pleased to receive suggestions.
Short reports Single case reports of outstanding interest or clinical relevance, short technical notes, and brief investigative studies are welcomed and usually published in the form of a Short/Technical report. At the discretion of the editor some case/short reports will be published in the correspondence section but will undergo the usual peer review process.
Length must not exceed 1000 words, including an unstructured abstract of less than 150 words, up to two figures or tables (or one of each) and up to 10 references. If more illustrations are required the text must be reduced accordingly.
Letters Letters must be typed in double line spacing, should normally be no more than 500 words and have no more than five references.
Tables Tables should be submitted in the same format as your article and embedded in the article.
Please note: Bench>Press CANNOT accept Excel files. If your table(s) are in Excel, copy and paste them into the manuscript file (where cited is preferable). In extreme circumstances, Excel files can be uploaded as supplementary files; however, we advise against this as this will not be acceptable if your article is accepted for publication.
Tables should be self-explanatory, and the data they contain must not be duplicated in the text or figures.
If any tables submitted have been published elsewhere, written consent to republication should be obtained by the author from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) and the authors. A copy of the letter of consent must be uploaded to Bench>Press as a supplementary file.
Figures The staining technique used should be stated. Magnifications should be given for electron micrographs but not for light micrographs except in cases where this is important. Areas in which tissue does not appear ("background") should be as near white as possible. Only salient features should be included to preserve detail.
Black and white images Black and white images (photographs, line drawings, graphs etc.) should be saved and supplied as: TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum of 300 dpi.
Colour images Colour images should be saved and supplied as: TIFF, GIF, or high quality JPEG files to a minimum of 600 dpi. Colour images should not exceed 2MB at a minimum resolution of 600 dpi. If you choose a higher resolution your image dimension should be reduced accordingly to keep the file under 2MB. NB Scanners may automatically increase image size at a higher resolution.
Powerpoint files SINGLE PAGE Powerpoint files can be submitted. Please submit ONE slide per file ONLY. Alternatively Powerpoint files can be saved as JPEG or TIFF files and submitted as a single image file. ALL IMAGES SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO BENCH>PRESS AS SEPARATE FILES AND NOT EMBEDDED IN THE MANUSCRIPT TEXT.
Colour reproduction of figures in papers is encouraged and is heavily subsidised by the journal. Advice on costs and material to be submitted for colour work should be sought from the editorial office. A separate charge is made for each colour image. When images form part of a composite figure (e.g. fig 1A-D), they will be considered as one and charged as such, provided the composite is supplied already mounted at an overall size not exceeding A4 (210 mm x 297 mm). Care should be taken in planning composites because combining different images with widely varying colours can lead to contamination or loss of colour and poor quality results.
If any illustrations submitted have been published elsewhere, written consent to republication should be obtained by the author from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) and the authors. A copy of the letter of consent must be uploaded to Bench>Press as a supplementary file.
Descriptions of laboratory methods When a manufacturer's method is used in a study with a particular item of equipment or kit of reagents, the source of this method and reference to the scientific literature on which it is based should be given.
For quantitative methods, information on the sensitivity, precision, and accuracy in the hands of the authors should always be provided. When a well recognised method is used, these requirement could be met simply by providing the references to the methodology and discussing the performance in a recognised current quality assurance scheme. Modifications to methods that have not been previously published should be detailed in the text and supported by evidence of their efficacy.
If is useful to indicate, either from personal observations or by reference, the working range of an assay and the normal reference range. When information is expressed as mean +/- 2SD, the distribution of the range (normal, skew or logarithmic) should be stated.
References References must be numbered in the order they appear in the text, and be identified by Arabic numerals in brackets, eg [1] [2]. The reference list should include all information (Vancouver style) except for for references with more than three authors - give the first three followed by et al.
Abstracts, information from manuscripts not yet accepted, or personal communications may be cited only in the text and not included in references. References are not checked by us; authors must verify references against the original documents before submitting the article.
Manuscript checklist Is there an abstract? Are the abbreviations spelt out? Are the measurements in SI units? Are the references in Vancouver style?
Reprints These may be ordered at cost when proofs are returned from:
