About the journal

 Journal of Applied   Mechanics
(ISSN 0021-8936)

The purpose of the Journal of Applied Mechanics is to serve as a vehicle for the communication of original research results of permanent interest in all branches of mechanics. The majority of the papers published the journal are full length articles of considerable depth. Another important format is the Brief Note, which is intended to serve as a means for the rapid communication of recent developments in an abridged form. Comments on published papers may be submitted in the form of discussion, which is subject to a rebuttal by the author. The Journal also lists and publishes scholarly reviews of new books on mechanics and Technical areas covered include:aerodynamics; aeroelasticity; boundary layers; computationalmechanics; constitutive modeling of materials; dynamics; elasticity; flow and fracture; heat transfer; hydraulics; impact; internal flow; mechanical properties of materials; micromechanics; plasticity; stress analysis; structures; thermodynamics; turbulence; vibration; and wave propagation.related areas.

Instructions to Authors
Since all Transactions papers are professionally typeset for publication, the papers need to be submitted as double-spaced, single-column manuscripts, prepared in a readable typeface, not less than 10 pt. in size, and double-spaced for ease of reading. ASME accepts manuscripts submitted as hard copy and in digital form.

Digital. Digital manuscripts must be accompanied by hard copy (4 copies). All digital files provided based on the following requirements will be used in the production of the paper. ASME accepts files created in Microsoft Word (both PC and Mac). The file should contain all text and any tabular and math; no graphics should be included in this file. For additional requirements for digital copy, refer to our web page (http://www.asme.org/pubs/MS4.html#PREPARING).

Hard Copy. All manuscripts submitted as hard copy only should be prepared as noted above. All special characters should be accounted for¡ªeither as part of the text file and appropriately styled (italic or boldface), or handwritten after output, if such characters do not exist in your program.

All manuscripts submitted to ASME must use SI (Metric) Units in text, figures, or tables. In addition to SI units, English units may be included parenthetically

All mathematical expressions should be included in the manuscript. Care should be taken to distinguish between capital and lowercase letters, between zero (0) and the letter (O), between the numerical (1) and the letter (l), etc. Mathematical expressions should fit into a single column when set in type. Equations that might extend beyond the width of one column (fractions that should not be broken or long expressions enclosed in parentheses) should be rephrased to go on two or more lines within column width. Fractional powers are preferred to root signs and should always be used in more elaborate formulas. The solidus (/) should be used instead of the horizontal line for fractions whenever possible. Numbers that identify mathematical expressions should be enclosed in parentheses. Refer to equations in the text as "Eq. (1),' etc., or "Equation (1),' etc., at the beginning of a sentence.

Brief tables may be included in the text of the manuscript, but larger tables (more than six lines) should be created separately and assembled with the figures at the end of the manuscript. A separate list of figure captions should be included in the manuscript. For detailed instructions on preparing hard copy graphics, go to http://www.asme.org/pubs/hardcopy_illus.html, for information on submitting electronic graphics, refer to http://www.asme.org/pubs/elect illus.html. Color graphics are included in the electronic version of the journal at no additional cost to the author; however, for full color in print authors will be assessed the additional charges

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has been neither published nor submitted for publication, in whole or in part, either in a serial, professional journal or as a part in a book which is formally published and made available to the public. ASME meeting preprints and articles included in symposium volumes for symposia (sponsored or co-sponsored by ASME) are not considered as prior publication. The journals do not accept multi-part manuscripts. Each paper should be capable of being reviewed independently of other submissions by the same author(s). Authors are urged to consult the ASME Journal Publication Guidelines (http://www.asme.org/pubs/authors/printpubs_jrls.html) before drafting their papers in final form.

Every page of the manuscript must be numbered and have the author's name on it; in the case of more than one author, the name of the first author will suffice. The paper title and author names, with their affiliations, should appear at the top of the first page of the manuscript. For style and guidelines in writing the paper please see additional details at http://www.asme.org/pubs/MS4.html.

Papers selected for publication in the ASME Transactions are subject to a voluntary page charge of $75 per journal page, which will be invoiced, through the author, to the author's company, institute, or agency. Publication is not dependent upon payment of the voluntary page charge. As of January 2000, the standard length for an ASME Journal paper is nine (9) printed pages. Should the paper exceed this length, the lead author will be assessed a mandatory excess-page charge of $200 per page for each page over nine pages. This charge will be included, as a separate item, on the same invoice as the voluntary page charge. Payment is mandatory and does not entitle the author to free reprints. Such a paper will not be published until the author agrees to honor the mandatory page charge.

The text of an ASME paper should not exceed nine (9) printed pages in a journal. This corresponds to 42-45 total manuscript pages, typed double-spaced with 10 pt. type, with each figure counting as a page. A Technical Note should not exceed two and a half journal pages. Discussions should not exceed 500 words, and closures normally should not exceed 250 words per discussion

If the voluntary page charge has been honored, 100 reprints are provided to the author(s) upon publication of the paper at no additional cost. Reprints may be ordered from the Technical Publishing Department, ATTN: Marisol Andino, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990. A reprint order form will be sent to the corresponding author after the article is typeset. All orders must be prepaid.

Please submit manuscripts for review and address all communications to: Dr. Robert McMeeking, Chair, Dept of Mech & Environmental Engrg, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-5070, P: 805-893-8434
F: 805-893-8651, E:
rmcm@engineering.ucsb.edu .

All references should be listed at the end of the text in the order in which they are cited (not alphabetical). References should include date of publication, full title, full name of source, and inclusive page numbers. References should be cited within the text in numerical order according to their order of appearance. The numbered reference citation should be enclosed in brackets, e.g., "It was shown by Prusa [1] that the width of the plume decreases under these conditions." In the case of two citations, the numbers should be separated by a comma [1,2]. In the case of more than two reference citations, the numbers should be separated by a dash [5-7]. Acceptable references include: journal articles, dissertations, published conference proceedings, numbered paper preprints from conferences, books, reports available from the U.S. Government, submitted articles if the journal is identified, and private communications.
