Instructions to Authors

GENERAL

The Journal publishes original articles and book reviews in the field of applied (i.e. economical and medical) entomology, including mites and spiders as well as myriapods. Original articles should not exceed forty pages and short communications should be no more than four pages in length. The articles are published in German, English and French.

SUBMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts for publication should be addressed to:

The Editor
Prof Dr R. Schopf
Am Hochanger 13
D-85354 Freising
Germany

and be inscribed 'For the Zeitschrift für angewandte Entomologie'. Acceptance of manuscripts for publication is decided by the editor, on the basis of one or several expert advisers' opinion. Correspondence concerning technical questions arising during printing should be sent to the publisher.

Manuscript Submission Form

REQUIREMENTS FOR MANUSCRIPTS

Form If possible send a diskette together with the manuscript. Manuscripts are to be submitted in duplicate in one of the official languages of publication. They must be typewritten, if possible on DIN A4 format paper (21 ?29.7 cm), with a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and double spaced. Each article should have a short summary in English; the English version is to be used as an abstract and placed at the beginning of the article regardless of the language of the main text. Each article should, as a rule, be divided into an Introduction; Material and methods; Results; Discussion; Summary; and References.

At the head of the manuscripts, the name(s) of the author(s), the address of the institution and where the work was carried out should be given. At the end of the manuscript, the full address(es) of the author(s) should be given.

For names of authors associated with literature citations, single underlining should be used. They will be printed in 'small capitals'. Wavy underlining indicates the scientific names of a genus, species and subspecies, and will be printed in italics. The scientist's name who first described the scientific item should not be underlined and will be set in lower case.

Units of Measurement

All units of measurement must follow the SI system. (Consult the pamphlet Gesetz über Einheiten im Meßwesen. A copy may be obtained from the publisher on request.) Concentrations of solutions may be given as molar or normal concentrations. All other concentrations are expressed as percentages.

Abbreviations

Abbreviations of biological, chemical or other terms should only be used when such abbreviations are unambiguous and internationally recognized. In any case, the first time an abbreviation is used the full name must also be given.

Illustrations and tables

The number and size of figures and tables must be kept to the minimum. As originals only reproducible original line drawings (not larger than 30 ?40 cm) or excellent photostats (approx. 18 ?24 cm) should be submitted. Colour photographic material should be of such quality that high contrast copies in black and white can be made. All figures should have uniform lettering and be large enough so that after reduction it appears not smaller than 1.5 mm. The figures are to be numbered and should bear on the back the name of the author(s) and the title of the article. Each figure must be accompanied by a legend. The text of the legends should be typed one after the other on a separate sheet. If figures or tables are taken from other publications, the source must be given.

Later alterations in the films of the figures are not possible.

Tables must be numbered and provided with a title. To avoid typesetting of the tables they should if possible be written in a way which allows photomechanical reproduction directly from the manuscript. A neat black typeface and clear arrangement of tables are necessary for this.

Illustration of a specific statement by both tables and figures (line drawings) is not permissible.

References

Each original contribution and, as a rule, shorter communications should have a bibliography that includes and is limited to the publications cited in the text. The name of a journal in which a paper appears should be given in abbreviated form as it appears on the cover of the journal concerned. If the title is not abbreviated, DIN standard No. 1502 with the supplement should be consulted. A copy may be obtained from the publishers on request. The references should be in alphabetical order of the names of the authors, and should give the full title of the paper. Anonymous contributions should be cited at the beginning of the bibliography.

Each reference should be drawn up as the examples given below:

a. From journals:

Tomiuk, J; Wohrmann, K.; Eggers, H. A., 1979: Enzyme patterns as a characteristic for the identification of aphids. Z. ang. Ent. 88, 440-446.

b. From books or other non-serial publications:

Wigglesworth, V. B., 1972: Principles of insect physiology. London: Methuen and Co. Ltd.

c. From reference book contributions:

Vanderveken, J. J., 1977: Oils and other inhibitors of nonpersistent virus transmission. In: Aphids as virus vectors Ed. by K. F. HARRIS and K. Maramorosch. New York: Academic Press, 435-454.

d. An unpublished work should only be cited when it has been accepted for publication, and then together with the name of the journal in which it has been accepted. For example:

John, P.; Dale, D.; Mathew, J., 1982: Insect antifeedant action of some fungicides. Z. ang. Ent. (in print).

In the running text, citations should be made as in the following examples: Beroks and Bode (1969), or (Richter 1971, 1973; Starck and Schneider 1971). With up to two authors, the names should be given; with more than two authors the name of the first author should be given followed by, et al.

CONDITIONS OF PUBLICATION

Publication in this Journal is carried out under the following conditions:

1. The work has not been published elsewhere. Theses and examination papers are not considered as publications in this sense.

2. With acceptance of the manuscript the publisher obtains the exclusive right to publish the article during the legal period of the copyright.

3. The author of an original article receives 25 free reprints of his paper. Further copies can be supplied against payment but only if the order is sent when the corrected galley proofs are returned to the editor.

4. On sale of reprints to commercial firms the author(s) receive(s) a commission of 10% of the proceeds.

5. Proceeds resulting from the sale of reproduction or translation rights will be shared equally between author(s) and the publisher.

6. The authors have a legal claim as set out in 554, Art. 2, of the copyright laws of Germany, on proceeds arising from duplication for commercial purposes, in which the paper is duplicated photomechanically or by other means for use within a commercial concern. The author is represented for this purpose by the publishers, who are obliged on their part to forward such claims - which are only collectively applicable - to the Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort, vereinigt mit der Verwertungsgesellschaft Wissenschaft, Frankfurt am Main. Payment for such claims is based on existing agreements with the trades associations concerned. The distribution of fees is determined by the German Patent Office as authorized representative of the GmbH. After subtraction of administrative costs, profits will be divided in equal parts between the authors and publishers concerned.

PRINTING OF PAPERS

Proof Correction

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.

Together with the proofs, the publisher will enclose prints from the figures in the form in which they will finally appear. The figure proofs must be sent back to the editor together with the corrected proofs.

BOOK REVIEWS

At the end of each issue, book reviews are usually published in the field of biology, zoology, and entomology. Books received by the Journal will be passed on by the editor to suitable specialists for review. Reviewers must return the manuscript of the review within three months to the editor, or return of the review copy of the book will be requested. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be given in the following form: Family name, followed by the forename initials of the author of the book; the book's title; which edition (if not the first); place of publication; name of publisher; year of publication; number of pages, figures and tables; binding and retail price. The review copy of a book remains the property of the reviewer.

The editor and publisher endeavour to publish all articles accepted for the Journal as promptly as possible. They request all authors to carefully observe the recommendations laid down in the 'Editorial Guidelines', so that publication of the Journal may be carried out with the highest possible efficiency, and to everyone's satisfaction.
