About the journal

Journal of Apicultural Research publishes descriptions of new findings on the scientific aspects of the biology, ecology, natural history and culture of Apoidea in general and Apis species in particular. The Journal also publishes theoretical papers where these relate to Apis, and letters on Apoidea-related subjects which have recently appeared in the journal or elsewhere.

Papers dealing with the economics, technology or sociology of beekeeping are more usually suited to IBRA's journal Bee World or other technical periodicals.

All material submitted to the journal undergoes review by the editors and independent peer referees, and papers are accepted for publication only if they are of the required standard and have not been published elsewhere. Copyright of published papers is normally held by the International Bee Research Association.

Instructions to Authors

Guidelines for authors

Those considering writing for this journal should study the following guidelines. Manuscripts that are correctly formatted will be processed much more quickly than those requiring considerable copy-editing, and submissions deviating significantly from these guidelines will not be considered by the editorial team.

Ethical considerations will be taken into account in considering the acceptability of papers, and the editorial board's decision on this, as on other aspects, will be final. The covering letter sent with the submission must confirm that all the authors have read and approved of the material being submitted, and that the findings reported are their own work. Papers submitted must not have been published or accepted for publication in any other journal, or be under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Journal of Apicultural Research has no page charges.

A pdf file of these guidelines is available: click here

Editing and Peer Review

This journal has a firm commitment to the rapid processing and quality reviewing of manuscripts. The editors in the USA and Europe handle the scientific assessment of papers, including their initial review, allocation of referees and the subsequent assessment of review and authors' revisions. Strict time schedules are set for both editors and the extensive international panel of referees.

Dr Pamela Munn at IBRA undertakes further editing of papers once accepted, to eliminate any final problems and ensure they conform to the Journal's style.

Structure of papers

Original Articles

Original research papers should be organized in the following way: Title, Author(s), Author affiliation, Summary, Keywords (provide up to 10), Introduction (including the objectives of the work), Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, and a short title (running head).
The Results and Discussion should not be combined.
Theoretical papers should contain some of these elements although they may require modified organization.

Notes and comments

This section is intended as a forum for two kinds of paper:

  • Brief research notes, reporting techniques and findings that are too narrow in scope to justify a larger research report.
  • Constructive criticisms of research papers which have recently appeared in the journal or elsewhere.

Papers intended for this section should not normally exceed 1000 words, and should contain no more than one figure or table, and five references. They should contain keywords (up to 10), but no summary; and should not have the subheadings of Introduction, Materials and methods, etc.

All papers published in this section will be subject to the same review process as Original Articles. Where it seems appropriate, the editors may solicit comments on an accepted paper from scientists known to have a strong interest in the subject. Comments contributed as a result of invitations from the editors will be evaluated by the journal's standard review process. Upon the recommendation of the referees, authors of Original Articles may be invited to restructure their papers to fit the comment format. Papers received this way may not require additional review.

Writing Style

Papers should be in clear, concise English. Preferably write in the first person and avoid the use of impersonal phrases such 'the authors', 'it was discussed'. The full scientific (Latin) name for the species must be cited in full the first time any organism is mentioned. In subsequent use, the genus may be abbreviated to its initial (e.g. B. hortorum). Authorities for specific names are not required except for taxonomic papers. Sufficient information on procedures must be supplied to make it possible for experiments to be repeated elsewhere. Statistical evaluation of results must be given where appropriate. The sources of equations and the names of statistical tests must be given in full at their first citation. An arithmetic mean should preferably be stated in the form: bar x ?s.e. (n).

The metric system (SI) must be used for all weights and measures, and temperatures must be given in ºC. Abbreviations for units must conform with usage in the Journal and can be given in the following ways: '6.05-10.93 ºC' and 'from 6.05 to 10.93 ºC' or '6.05 to 10.93 and 14.02 ºC' or '14.23 ?s.e. 9.78 ºC (n = 50)'. Durations of time should be given as '3 h 30 min' or '210 min'. Times of day should be given in the format '14.15 h'.

Authors for whom English is not their primary language are encouraged to seek professional editorial assistance in the preparation of manuscripts. The Editors reserve the right to reject, without further review, papers that do not meet acceptable standards of English language and spelling.

References

References should conform to the Harvard (name and date) system. When quoting references in the text, give the name of the author(s) and the year of publication, and if there are more than two authors give the name of the first followed by 'et al.' References cited together in the text should be arranged chronologically, for example: (Goodwin, 1985; Anderson, 1986, 1987).

Arrange the list of references at the end of the paper alphabetically by author's name in the following order: publications of the single author, chronologically ordered; publications of the same author with one or more than one co-authors, chronologically ordered. It is the author's responsibility to check that the references in the text correspond exactly with the list at the end of the paper.

The style and punctuation of references listed should follow the format given here. Titles of periodicals are not to be abbreviated. A full set of specimen references is available and can be obtained from IBRA or this journal's editor - addresses are given at the end of these guidelines.

Formatting Instructions for Illustrations and Graphics

Illustrations and graphics should be formatted as indicated below. Please read the instructions carefully to avoid delays in processing your paper.

Colour photos or illustrations can be included, but the extra cost will be charged to the author(s). Calculating the exact cost is a little complicated and a specific quotation should be obtained from IBRA.

Those authors who use applications such as Microsoft Excel to create graphs and illustrations can submit the graphics files along with the manuscript. Authors who do this will be able to take advantage of the high-resolution image-setter used by the journal's designers.

If you produce your charts or graphs in SPSS Deltagraph or Microsoft Excel, as part of a spreadsheet, please supply the whole spreadsheet (.dg5 or .xls) file with the graph embedded within.

Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw are the preferred illustration packages, as the native files produced by these applications are based on mathematically defined vectors, and can be scaled to any size without loss of clarity. Graphics should be saved as Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) files. If it is possible within the application you are using, convert type within the file to outlines, or use Arial or Times as the text font and Wingdings and Symbol as symbol fonts in your document. This will minimize problems that may arise with font substitution. Other vector-based file formats are supported, including Adobe Acrobat portable document format (.pdf), Windows Metafile (.wmf) and Extended Metafile (.emf).

If your statistics or illustration application only saves bitmapped graphics, the preferred file type is the tagged image file format (.tif), which should be compressed using LZW, CCITT, Packbit or JPEG compression schemes, or Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg) file with image quality set to 'maximum'. Bitmapped graphics files are fixed resolution files which show pixellation if enlarged, and tend to be larger than vector-based equivalents. If you are producing a bitmap, the file's resolution should be no less than 240 pixels per centimetre/300 pixels per inch (preferably 480 ppcm/600 ppi or greater) at 170 mm wide.

Photographs and other continuous-tone images supplied as files should be no less than 180 ppcm/225 ppi at 170 mm wide (preferably 210 ppcm/263 ppi). Files should be supplied as 8 bit greyscale (or 256 greys), and saved as a compressed TIFF or maximum quality JPEG. Colour images should conform to the same size and resolution as greyscale images, and can be sent as RGB or CMYK colour separated TIFF or JPEG files.

If you use a file compression utility, before e-mailing the files as an attachment, the preferred format is Zip (.zip). For e-mail, MIME (base 64) or UUencoded (.uu) encoded attachments are preferred; Bin-Hex (.hqx) and MacBinary (.bin) are also accepted.

If you have any questions about sending graphics files, please contact Dr Pamela Munn at IBRA.

Tables

Tables should be self-explanatory, and headings should be self-contained. The reader should not have to search the text for relevant material. Footnotes are for incidental information (e.g. *observation delayed by bad weather; **two samples only). Make sure that the type for all headings can be set within the width of a JAR page (with a maximum width of 96 characters, including spaces) . A table can be printed sideways if absolutely necessary, though this should be avoided if possible.

Important
Once your paper has been accepted, when preparing tables in your word processing application, please use tabs and carriage returns only - avoid using page layout or 'table' functions, 'wizards', 'assistants', columns or any other specialized table creation functions. The use of these table editors results in text files which alter the order in which the table data appears. The journal's designers insist that we use text or ASCII files, which can be re-formatted easily into the journal's typographical style. Incorrectly formatted tables will be returned to the author(s) for revision and publication will be delayed.

Submitting Manuscripts

E-mailed submissions are the preferred method of submission. Submission of printed copy by mail will only be considered with prior agreement of the Editors.

When you first e-mail your paper for consideration by the Editors, please send a single file containing all the figures and tables embedded in a Microsoft Word file to either Dr Delaplane, Dr Danka or Dr Brodsgaard for peer-review. Once the paper has been accepted, you will need to send the text and image files separately as described below.

Once you have received the editor's letter confirming that your paper has been accepted in its final form, e-mail a copy of the revised manuscript and accompanying illustrations and to the Editor dealing with your paper. The files sent should now be separated and contain:

  • File 1: the text of the article in MS Word format (preferred)
  • File 2: any tables (see note above)
  • File 3: the captions to the figures
  • Any images or graphics, sent each as a separate file (see above for details of file format)

Computer viruses are a growing problem, so please ensure that the files have been scanned using the latest virus scanning software.

Proofs and Reprints

Proofs will be sent to the first author indicated on the title page unless otherwise specified. To speed-up the proofing process, the proofs will be e-mailed as an Acrobat pdf (portable document format) file, unless hard copy was specifically requested at the time of acceptance (you must inform Dr Munn as soon as the paper is accepted). You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader which is free to download.

The proofs should be carefully corrected and must be returned to Dr Munn within 48 hours of receiving them. If this period is exceeded, the proofs will be checked only by the editorial staff of the journal and printed without the author's corrections. If substantial changes from the original manuscript are requested at the proof stage, they will be subject to editorial review and made at the author's expense.

A high resolution pdf file or 50 free reprints will be sent to the first author or corresponding author for each paper. Additional reprints may be ordered using the form sent with the proofs. Reprints are printed at the same time that the journal is printed, and so orders must be sent with the corrected proofs. Late orders will be charged at a higher rate than given on the order form.

IBRA does not have page charges for any of its journals.
