Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts may be submitted to any of the Editors. Each Editor is responsible for the papers submitted to him or to her. This will minimize the delay between the writing and publication of papers.
Submission of Manuscripts.Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in the Journal of Algebra represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.
Electronic Transmission of Accepted Manuscripts. Authors are requested to transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP, after all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Submission as an e-mail attachment is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes [jalgebra@acad.com]. Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome; however, LaTeX(2e) is strongly preferred. Note that the use of other specialized versions of TeX or extensive use of custom macros may necessitate conventional typesetting from the hard-copy manuscript. Hard-copy printouts of the manuscript and art must also be supplied. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully. Complete instructions for electronic transmission can be found on the journal home page (www.academicpress.com/jalgebra).
Digital Object Identifier. Academic Press assigns a unique digital object identifier (DOI) to every article it publishes. The DOI appears on the title page of the article. It is assigned after the article has been accepted for publication and persists throughout the lifetime of the article. Because of its persistence, it can be used to query Academic Press for information on the article during the production process, to find the article on the Internet through various Web sites, including IDEAL, and to cite the article in academic references. When an Academic Press article is used in a reference section, it is important to include the article's DOI in the reference, as volume and page information is not always available for articles published online. See References below for samples of DOIs included in references. Further information may be found at http://www.academicpress.com/doi.
Copyright.Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement, which may be copied from the pages following the Information for Authors or found on the journal home page, should be signed by the appropriate person(s) and should accompany the original submission of a manuscript to this journal. The transfer of copyright does not take effect until the manuscript is accepted for publication.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules (deviation from these rules causes publication delays):
Form of Manuscript. Submit manuscripts in duplicate-including the original typewritten copy (preferably triple-spaced but at least double-spaced)-on one side of 8.5 x 11 inch white paper. Number each page. Page 1 should contain the article title, author and coauthor names, and complete affiliation(s) (name of institution with complete mailing address)and email. At the bottom of page 1 place any footnotes to the title (indicated by superscript Arabic numerals). Page 2 should contain a proposed running head (abbreviated form of the title) of less than 35 characters. It should also contain the name and mailing address of the author to whom proofs should be sent. Key words should be listed immediately after the abstract.
Tables. Number tables consecutively with Roman numerals. Extensive tables will be reproduced photographically and so should be typed carefully and in the exact format desired. Authors will be charged for any photoreproductions necessitated by changes in proof. Use superscript lowercase italic letters for table footnotes, which should be typed immediately below the table. Type tables at least double-spaced, including titles and footnotes. Do not underline table titles: reserve underlining for text that is to be italicized. Tables should not be embedded in text.
Equations should be typewritten and with the number placed in parentheses at the right margin. Reference to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)" or simply (3).
"Style." In general, authors should be guided by A Manual for Authors, published in 1962 (and revised in 1980) by the American Mathematical Society, P.O. Box 6248, Providence, RI 02904, but
References should be styled and punctuated according to the following examples. When citing an Academic Press journal, include the digital object identifier (DOI), if noted, from the article's title page. Please note the following examples, the second of which shows an article available on IDEAL but not yet assigned to a printed issue.
- J. G. Clunie and A. B. J. Kuijlaars, Approximation by polynomials with restricted zeros, J. Approx. Theory 79 (1994), 109-124.
- A. Francis, The minimal basis for the centre of an Iwahori-Hecke algebra, J. Algebra 221(1999), 1-28, doi:10.1006/jabr.1999.7925.
- X.Xu, Variational calculus of supervariables and related algebraic structures, J. Algebra, doi:10.1006/jabr.1999.8064.
- A.G.Ramm, "Multidimensional Inverse Scattering Problems," Longman/Wiley, New York, 1992.
- Y. You, Polynomial solutions of BKP hierarchy and projective representation of symmetric groups, in "Advanced Series in Mathematical Physics," Vol. 17, World Science, Singapore, 1989.
For unpublished lectures or symposia, include title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and date. For journal names, follow the latest edition of "Abbreviations of Names of Serials" reviewed in Mathematical Reviews (Mathematical Reviews Annual Index, American Mathematical Society). Cite references in the text by an Arabic number between square brackets, as [1], [1, 2], [1, Theorem 1.5], etc. Type references double- or triple-spaced throughout.
Footnotes in text should be avoided if at all possible. If they must be used, identify by superscript numbers and type together on a separate page, double- or triple-spaced.
Figures. All illustrations are to be considered as figures. Number each figure ++ in sequence with Arabic numerals. Supply a descriptive legend for each figure. Figures must be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction, and each figure should appear on a separate sheet. Lettering on drawings should be of professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and should be large enough (10-12 points) to take a reduction of 50 to 60%. Identify each figure with the name of the journal, author's name, and figure number; avoid marking the backs of figures. Supply a descriptive legend for each figure. Type legends double- or triple-spaced consecutively on a separate sheet. Figures and tables should not be embedded within the text. Publication may be delayed if art is embedded within the article.
Proofs. Proofs will be sent to the author with a reprint order form. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the cost of composition.
Reprints. Fifty reprints without covers will be provided free of charge. Additional reprints may be purchased; an order form will be included with proofs.
Complete instructions for electronic submission can be found on the Electronic Submission Information page
